Gran Turismo Sport demo coming Oct. 9

There's a thing I would like to ask, anyone knows how to use of the clutch pedal in this game? I've pressed once casually during a race and it just put me in neutral, like I flipped a switch. I wasn't expecting that.

So if I play online without any assists, do I get matched with players who use similiar settings or do I atleast get higher price money and experience?

No, matching is done by SR only AFAIK.

Honestly feel for you, GHG, seems you got hit hard with the SR system on BB Raceway, which is surprising to me because I got bumped and been [accidentally] bumping countless times on that track and on Tokyo Expressway last night but still managed to maintain an SR of B. I must have been making more ground than losing safety wise.

Hopefully you make it out of there quick time!

I had no idea how this system worked properly until it was too late, I wasn't even keeping an eye on it. Then I started noticing Every race was a shitshow compared to the races I was having on Monday. Then it dawned on me...

Just had an awesome kart race. Started 8th, after the first turn I was 4th already, not touching anyone (need some luck to do that lol). Then there were 3 more laps of being 4-3-4-3-4-3-2-3-2-3-4-2 every every turn. Those 2 guys that I was trading position were driving well so we were not touching each other, it was a great race. In the end I finished in the second place because they both lost the line so I ended up in the second place. First place was way ahead though. It is so great to play with people that are actually interested in playing fair. I am still C though.

Enjoyed the time I spent with the game last night. I'll probably eventually play through the single player content, but I'm not an online racer. (due to time mostly)

Hopefully the visuals get a few upgrades/tweaks once out of Beta. I don't know what some people are smoking, but during actual gameplay the moments the game is rough looking far outweigh the moments it looks good. Anything more than like 20 yards from your car is pretty messy. It's really noticeable when you're looking ahead to hit corners.

Now in the scapes and replays...the game does look really nice. The handling isn't too bad, and I was happy with the sound of the cars. The "guttural" sound seems to be a little lacking on my Mustang, but it sounds much better than previous games.

Haven't had a chance to pull my PNGs, but I took random shots during the driving tests and my first race if one wants to see where my thoughts come from.

Edit** Open these full-res (new tab) on a computer/big-screen if you want to see what it looks like.

Trees and mountain are really rough on the driver test track.

22382092_10214738652378za4.jpg

What are the trees doing?

22339305_102147386526slz84.jpg

What's up with the track textures during the pre-race..haha. DC did this too.

22384292_102147386526jjxis.jpg

The mountain/background textures are rough.

22338813_1021473865323aa8a.jpg

...trees/bushes still being all weird.

This stuff really sticks out on 50" 4k screens. I actually moved from my 4k to my 40" 1080p and things aren't as distracting.

Fuck yes D rating.

I'm clawing my way out of this roach pit.

Edit: Shandy, if all you want to do is "let my try and find worse case scenarios to make this game look as bad as possible" then stick to the cesspit that is the graphics war thread.

Not at all what I did...not even close. I literally took random shots purposefully in case anyone said that. Those are literally the very first screenshots I took while playing the game for the first time. I'm sure I could take amazing shots, but I'd have to find those moments.

My first shot I took was LITERALLY the very first track and impression you get playing the game on the drivers test track.

My Mustang, for example, looks amazing in the waiting screen at the beginning. The scapes look great. The gameplay during an actual race is another story, period.

However, like I said...I've only played the game for a few hours...and I've yet to race a track that has the lighting angles that look really nice. Like the low sun shots I've seen. My impressions will probably change if those moments look great.

Yeah, a few bumps here and there are okay, because you can make up for them by clean racing future sectors. Unlike poor GHG, I've always kept an eye on SR since the game is making a big deal about it. It's gotten to the point where I think the best strategy is that if the race is tending on the rough side for whatever reason, give up your ambitions for position in the race and focus on making sure you don't lower your SR.

Given that maxim, the Gr. 1 Tokyo Expressway challenge today was tough, but it was not un-raceable, I think. I lost a few places, but came out pretty okay after the final assessment and penalties.

Youtube: Tokyo Expressway Gr.1 full online Sports mode race

EDIT: Lol, look at the car in front of me do a little Knight Rider turbo boost around 04:25 =)

Also, fwiw, I had been forewarned abt. this track from reading this thread before the race this morning.

Everything posted so far seems to indicate the assets between replay and gameplay are identical and the only changes appear to be the addition of DOF and more dynamic camera angles.

Yeah, I can agree and it seems to be common across both GT and Forza, which really makes me wonder what it is in racing games that is so demanding that they're unable to render fully polygonal trees. I mean, is it really just the sheer number of physics calculations, because, as a genre, racers literally have fuck all going on compared to other games.

I mean, is it really more technically demanding than - say - MGSV, which has hundreds complex character animations, hugely complex, fully interactable worlds, hundreds of weapons, particle effects and - yes - even vehicles. Can anyone with a technical background explain?

That's all fine but coming in with the "I don't know what you're all smoking" would suggest otherwise.

Nobody's smoking anything, but most rational people will wait until they see more than just one track to judge a games looks.

Bit the bullet and ordered this last night. Simply Games in the UK has it a few £s cheaper than anywhere else and I know they're great at delivering on time. Wasn't going to get this after seeing how paltry that track list is but my god the game sounds amazing and I'm sorely lacking a polished racer, in the way GT has always been. Love the GT pad handling and is a large reason why PCars 2 has not interested me at all after 1 was shocking and 2 apparently improved but not perfect in that respect either.

Might buy that box that lets you use an old DFGT wheel at some point.

Btw I've not played the demo but impressions and videos have sold me. Looking forward to just chilling out with this games in Scapes and the livery editor as well as finally getting back to the Nordschleife life! I missed that track, been ages since I drove it in GT5/6. So seems the demo access has been a success!

The missions are HARD.

I wonder if they'll tweak the gold times after seeing how the average player does in the demo. The gold time for the rally circuit experience is brutal as well.

12 hours play time already, good for 12% career progress.

100 hr campaign confirmed.

I doubt it, you've always had to earn the golds in GT throughout the series. It's kind of their thing.

Getting gold in S License was like a rite of passage in previous games.

I caved in and downloaded it yesterday on my Pro (only hooked up to my 24" 1080p monitor on my racing rig), and whilst I agree with the 'not as impressive as the hype suggested', to be clear, playing both this and the main competition pretty much back to back, I am more than happy with the visuals in GT:S, pretty much a locked 60fps from what I can see, no drops I found and really like the overall lighting (more pleasing to my eyes in general than the other game)

My only gripe was my fanatec wheel not supported, but the drivehub should sort that out if Fanatec don't..

People are playing the Kart race like it's fucking Mario Kart. Started at P2 and went to overtake the first kart at the start of the second lap, the guy purposely touched the back of my kart and I spun. Went to P8. Again, gained a few positions, somebody touches my kart again, spun. Repeat that one more time. And each time my SR went down. This is such bullshit.

I'm tempted to re-play the endurance event. The first playthrough was frustrating in a lot of ways (the AI would randomly spike in hostility, braking away from its own line to pit-maneuver me every 4+ laps, but I also wanna go for gold. I have a feeling the "story" in my head is even more interesting now because I don't know exactly what to expect from the other cars. My fear is that the hostlity is actually a deliberate balance mechanism (and I can tell I was benefiting from the rubberbanding), but I'm not positive. I gotta know, lol.

I definitely hit a good groove around lap 19.

Ah, I guess I'm not alone. It was really hard to get to the 3rd place because the AI was so aggressive behind me. I spinned 3 times, not even one of them was my fault. Maybe karma, but I drove pretty clean imo.

I wish there was a way to turn on only the proximity sensor. I don't want the rest of the hud that comes with it.

Playing these karts in cockpit mode without mirrors with these morons around is a joke.

Yeah, the system needs to be tuned, coming from a similar experience on driveclub I am sure PD will manage to find the right balance.

Just now many are sent in SR hell so the races will become better in the starting SR for everyone.

Played 3 Sport races:

Got 3rd place on my first race ever (started at 6th because of a good qualy), I was super excited although disappointed since I was 2nd the whole race and make a wrong turn on the last curve and lost my place, still 3rd felt really good. I was ready to save my race until Ratings came (Understand that I didn't know about this) and penalizations got me way down to 11th. -_-

Asumed that I shouldn't hit walls, cars or get out of track so my main focus was that. Sadly my qualyfications on my other two races were poor and I always started last (24th). In both I ended at 21 or 22 and received very little pen, My SR was B in both races, I think it's pretty good considering most people were C or D, just three or four people got B.

What pissed me off a little is that I saw like... five or six people being penalized in total and I'm sure that a looooot of racers hit other cars way often. Also, how are they getting C or D ratings in SR but not being penalized!?

Another thing is that even if I'm getting B in SR, I can't get my way out of E in DR... I asume that I'm really amateurish in my way of racing even if I don't hit the wall or get out of track.

Your enemy is the bmw, avoid it like plague.
Enter the pit a lap earlier even and build your lead from there. in the 3rd stint move your power to economy thinghy up a couple of notches to be able to stay on the track 2 or 3 laps more.
Go win from there.

My god if your rating drops is it difficult to get it back up because you're banished to the lobbies where everybody goes out of their way to hit each other.

Should have never done races on that shitty oval last night.

That's why I called it purgatory. As soon as I was down in c, I had to basically dodge dive bombers till I got back out. Took two races for me.

You can "use up" the penalty in race by slowing down.

DR is all about speed so just need a few more higher up positions and you will go up :)

I think things will sort themselves out eventually. I was just in a D rating race where over half the field managed to get themselves demoted to E. I just hung right out at the back of the race and left them to it.

Sorry, I don't get this, what do you mean? :/

I see that sometimes I get a penalization for going too fast on curves even if I don't hit the wall or have no competitors around, I still get it but don't know why, I asume is for safety.

Edit: My last racing game was Gran Turismo 4 so... it's not really my place but I'm having are great time.

lol, that's me in every online racing game. I deliberately (sometimes) choose an out-classed car and watch the flames. Anyone I beat, bonus.

SR is solely about your etiquette. Don't hit barriers or other racers and watch that thing slowly rise.

At the race report screen, you will see a driver's overall DR and SR. If a driver's SR is displayed in red, that means their SR rating has taken a bit of a hit. If its in blue, that means they've gained a little bit towards their overall rating. If its in white that means they've come out level and there has been no change to their overall rating.

I've had a few questionable calls just for speed (which I don't quite understand either; no impact, no more than two wheels on candy-stripes, or opponent proximity to explain it). Generally with those if I just go in a hair slower on the next curve, it seems to cancel it out? It didn't add to my overall penalty time when I finished, as far as I could tell.

The penalties are a little wonky though, I've definitely been in the wrong more than once with an actual impact, and it didn't even blink.

Sounds like you're cutting the corner, in real life it's when all 4 wheels go beyond the white line, I'm not sure how GT measures it.

This is pretty much what I'm getting. Start on pole every race then the exact same point on the first lap I get spun out going straight. Go down to 12th position, get back up to second cleanly with no cutting, rubbing or bumping then then get spun out again on the second to last lap (usually by the person in third), make it back to 5th or 6th. Get penalised for being spun out which I'm usually just holding a straight line when it happens. I could win if I had 12 laps with the people I have been racing as I can stick to safe overtakes which would stop any PIT manoeuvres but if I want to take first I have to make moves where I normally wouldn't. Constantly get the fastest laps and thats even not taking the racing line to avoid collisions and people will move across the track just to hit you.

Looking at GHG's post looks like I will have to not race for a bit to get better people, but they are so slow.

It could be... I didn't race enough to be sure. I'll give it another try tonight.

Sorry, I wasn't clear:

SR is Sportsmanship Rating, you were driving clean so you moved up to B which is awesome.
DR is driver rating which is then linked to, basically, how fast you are, so as you get faster and learn the tracks your rating will go up.
