Super Mario Odyssey |OT| RSVP: Guests of the Groom

Bought a Switch for this, no regrets.

Played for a good while yesterday, just focusing on exploration and getting as many moons as possible in the first three kingdoms. Without a doubt, this is the game I’ve wanted for at least a decade.

This game looks damn good.

I think my favourite kingdom is Donk City. Mainly because what happens at the end. You can tell this kingdom got most dev time

But those are button inputs are clearly infer8
88ior to the motion inputs. I haven't found out how to
make the onion jump higher
without shaking my switch like crazy, almost dropping it.

Love the game, but this crap holds it back from a masterpiece.

The game looks and plays at its best in TV mode, but it falls short of being a masterpiece because you can perform an optional move in portable mode? Huh?

On that note, this seems to be one of the few Switch games that isn't that gorgeous on Switch's screen. It looked like resolution gets pretty low, while textures take a hit. It looks pretty washed out. I was stunned by HOW MUCH better it looks in TV mode. Splatoon 2, in comparison, looks phenomenal in handheld mode. I've heard Mario Kart 8 Deluxe does as well(I don't own it).

If anybody could tell me where moon number 68 is on the sand kingdom, that would be a real delight.

Edit: doesn't matter, I've found a helpful guide which told me.

Vanishing Road in the post-game is so damn tough. Took me at least 50 tries before I finally nailed it. Having to do 20 consecutive dives without a mistake is brutal. I struggled far less on the other hat-less challenges in the same area (even the consecutive long jump one!)

I've only played in handheld mode so far so I haven't gotten into any motion controls yet. To make that jump higher without motion controls, hold one of the face buttons to extend, then while at your peak, hold another one of the buttons and you'll get slightly taller. Honestly it's probably easier with buttons than motion.

Amazon somehow messed up my order and I'm not getting it until sometime today. I've got nothing else planned for the day so I hope it comes soon! Or else maybe I'll just swing by a store and pick it up.

Did you order through Prime? Make sure to contact help and get a free month. Makes the delay somewhat better.

The graphics can look pretty rough in handheld mode. Looks like it drops all the way down to 480p at times especially during motion.

Looks a lot better in docked mode.

I know it's blasphemous, but I wish they would have given us a 30fps option like fire emblem warriors.

Either that or simplified the geometry like Splatoon 2. That game looks great and runs at 60fps.

Just do something else, it will come soon enough :). The end of the day is not that far... I promise ;).

I haven't played handheld mode but the Y button performs 95% of the same actions as the motion controls.

The system was designed to be played as both portable and console but its biggest game has functionality that isn't usable or isn't as usable in handheld mode and I'm not allowed to complain about that? Huh?

I'll have to try this. Hope it works. The tutorials should reflect whether or not you have motion controls turned off.

Still, having to make Mario twirl before he can do the orbital Cappy throw is a good example of why button controls can't be useful in a pinch like motion controls can.

You roll faster when shaking the joycon than you do by pressing y. There is literally no reason to design the game this way. Absolutely none. There also appears to be no way to do your homing attack with the hat after it's extended without motion. These are stupid design decisions that make no sense.

Can't you just double tap Y and it will do the homing thing? Pretty sure I was doing that before I knew that it was also motion activated. The rolling is annoying but you can still roll and repeatedly hit the Y button to keep going.

No waaay. Gameplay first.
Though i guess SMO shows the limitations of the current Switch, im sad we are going to see many sub 720p when even the Wii U didn't have that (in most cases)

Lovely game. Played up to the desert world yesterday, planning to get some more time later today.

I really dislike the exclusive motion control actions, like the circular hat throw. Other than that, I think this game hits everything out of the park!

I've tried pressing y again after a first press and it doesn't work.

If you spin your character you can do that attack

You are aware of the ability to chain rolls together into a run at max speed? The slope physics are pretty damn awesome too when you're rolling, think you're underestimating Odyssey a little here.

Yeah I use it, but SM64 still has a better sense of speed/momentum, in addition to having a lot more cancellable moves.

Also no motion controls whatsoever :D

my only dislike is that no ghost type kingdom or enemies

I think it's ok considering they did away with a lot of the usual Mario environment types, but it's probably the one I missed the most.

If they ever decide to do DLC for this game, I'll gladly welcome it.

Yeah, the
zombies
were cute I suppose but I've grown to love Mario ghost levels.

I keep thinking I'm seeing references to Super Mario RPG all over the place, and some worlds have more obvious ones than others. Maybe I'm just crazy.

I just started playing this morning. I wasn't able to play any last night cause my dang UPS driver always delivers so late and by time he came, it was already time to go to the Halloween haunted house/manor with friends.

But I really like what I've played so far.

I found Peach wearing a
Boo pin in her hair and it made me sad we didn't have any ghost house levels.

I wonder if they've done this on purpose because they have another Luigi's Mansion coming out soon?

Really like what I've played so far, just got to the Sand Kingdom.

I think if I have any complaints it's that you can't get all the Moon's in a world until you move forward with the story. I got all the purple coins and all the the moons that the bird hints at in the Cascade World, but when you look at your list there are plenty of empty spots left :(

Makes me feel a bit bad about moving forward but right now I'm interpreting that as "complete".

I got an OLED TV, arrived at the Sand Kingdom yesterday (didn't go anywhere yet) and it looks crazy on it. The red sand and blue sky really pop.

Absolutely loving it so far. I have 3 kingdoms open.
Hard to get used to a MARIO with no real power ups. I guess Galaxy was the same way.

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."
In the desert world, I'm not seeing the 10/10 goty contender yet. When does this game pick up?

Yeah, a lot of moons (sometimes even half) are locked until you beat the game. I would've preferred if they didn't show them in the list, but anyways... I recommend you finish the game before worrying too much about completion. ;)

It gets a lot crazier in the second half.
And the really good boss battle start from the Wooded Kingdom on.

I am struggling to settle on a control scheme for this game. The pro controller feels more comfortable but I hate missing out on some of the moves and versatility that comes with split joy cons.

Its frustrating.

So it looks like the moons in each world's normal coin shop
become infinite
in the post-game. As in
you can buy as many as you like if you have the cash. As best I can tell this is to help with grinding up 500 moons for the last kingdom, because you only have to buy one from each shop in order to complete the entries in the moon list.

If it hasn't grabbed you by the time you hit street level in New Donk then it might not be your GOTY.

Same here, I impulse bought a pro controller to play Odyssey with for the nicer sticks but doing cap spins and whatnot is really awkward with a two-handed pad.

I don't think I can go back to split joycons at this point.

Well I just finished the game - meaning I got the credits sequence. According to the parental control app, it didn't take me very long
10 hours
. Thankfully there's still plenty to do. I didn't feel like I was rushing through it in any way. Well, I was probably subconsciously interested in getting to New Donk City.

I think it's a good game, great even, but I feel slightly disappointed. Likely I was overhyped from the Metacritic store and all those 10/10's. Zelda had gotten all the same hype and that experience really delivered for me. I wouldn't call this new Mario as revolutionary. Just a really solid title.

Hey i found something by accident.

If you go to your ship at the back, there is a steaming pipe. You can enter that one like a green pipe. It's always nice nintendo are thinking about those small details.

just getting the end credits usually means very little in a game like this.

How does it compare to the Galaxy games?
