Very charming and earnest game, cannot help but smile at many offbeat absurdities.

Mechanically though, I think I'm just not into 3D adventure Mario. Hopefully they release more 2D platformers like NSLU.

no thank you. I hated NSLU.. fuck the timer in that game, fuck the luigi physics, fuck how short everything was.

How do you do photo mode. If it has to be acquired and is a spoiler just tell me it's a spoiler (I'm at the beginning of the game.

The other isn't really a big deal, just that sometimes you get the impression that the devs went overboard with the rewards. I love finding moons, and finding new ways to get them, but some of them do feel phoned in a little. But I understand that there needs to be some moons to help players progress if stuck.

Yeah, quite a few of these moons are lame. Like, just ground-pound in some random spot that is sparkling for no reason...and moon. Seriously?

I kind of thought that was a nice surprise. As a person who tries to interact with everything possible I thought it was great to pay off that curiosity. There sounds like there are so many damn moons in this game why not throw a few in easier but not obvious spots.

How do I get that moon on top of the pyramid in sand kingdom that's moving underground. Everytime I run to it it moves to the other side.

I felt like a stupid cat trying to catch a mouse with the same tactic each time haha.

If you're just the right distance away, you can throw your hat at it to stop it moving for a little while.

My mind was blown by Traditional Festival just now. Normally I wait until I get a moon to capture a clip, but I was capturing clips after every pipe of that segment... DAYUM! It was good. Well, my play was messy at times, but hey... I'll go back for a skilled run to do it some justice.

Can't find any back entrance.

edit: I found out now. But that's not the way in to that large skyscraper you can fly to the top of? How do you get inside that?

You can't get it yet. Lots of moons require revisits after beating the game.

Lol I just realized this is the year Nintendo allows their 2 prominent characters to be naked. No wonder these games are/will set records...

First impressions and im bored :/

It feels linear bit sized missions so far. Hat gimmick is fun if a little simple, difficulty far too easy with a minimal consequence for failing. Maybe i will enjoy it better with the motion controls haven't tried yet.

However presentation wise its a winner, huge step up from 3D World and more in line with Galaxy, there is a (simple) plot, cutscenes and some charming enemies/npcs .things like stores , costumes, minigames make Odyssey seem like a true evolution of the Mario formula.or at least a fresh change of pace.

Problem i guess its the Nintendo formula, variety lots of polish but simple mechanics with low difficulty, so far i enjoyed Zelda BotW far more.

For the life of me cannot find the last three purple coins in the sand kingdom. Ugh. Started the game up today and probably put in about 8 hours. Trying to get as many moons as possible in each kingdom before moving onto the next one. Up to 125 right now. Can't wait to play more tomorrow... This is video gaming at it's best.

Full disclosure, I have never played a proper 3D Mario game before (no Mario 64, no Mario Sunshine and no Mario Galaxy). The only Mario games I have played are the original Super Mario Bros, New Super Mario Bros and Super Mario 3D Land.

I played through the first 10 Kingdoms yesterday and came away having enjoyed my time with the game but with no real desire to play anymore of it.

The presentation and music are both brilliant and the game has so many cute little details and so much charm. It genuinely made me feel happy just running around a lot of the environments.

The gameplay itself was ok but I found it all very basic and lacking in any challenge. It was very rare that I 'died' and often I found that death was a result of me either struggling with the camera or struggling with the waggle controls.

For someone completely new to 3D Mario I wasn't 100% happy with the way that Mario controls. I'm not sure if it's the camera or if it was the method that I played (I played with 2 split joy cons) but I found that I would often struggle to have Mario do exactly what I wanted. The cap in particular was difficult to throw up/down or along the ground so eventually I gave up and used the buttons only. On a personal level I just don't like the way that Mario runs and 'feels' in this game but I imagine this is just my personal issue since I haven't really seen or heard about anyone else complaining about the movement or controls. I think maybe things would improve if I were using a pro controller but the default control method of 2 split joy cons just didn't really work well for me.

Overall I enjoyed the game enough to play through the first 10 kingdoms but I didn't really find anything memorable about the game outside of the presentation and my annoyance with the joy cons. All of the bosses were very simple and basic (so far) and the gameplay is mostly without any sort of challenge in terms of platforming. Collecting additional moons just didn't really have much appeal to me either so maybe this style of Mario game just isn't for me.

Loving the game so far, and I am only in the Desert world. Been put back in there after killing the boss there.

So, how do you do that double hat jump? I’ve seen a video of someone performing it. Back in the first area with the dinosaur, there is a huge rock with a flag on it. I think I can make that if you did the double hat jump, but I can’t do that. Is it an unlocked move?

I can jump to Cappy of course, but jumping from him and throwing Cappy again to land again, I can’t do. Any ideas?

Not sure if this is what you're talking about: https://kotaku.com/how-to-jump-really-really-far-in-super-mario-odyssey-1819922521

I've been practicing it and it's a little tricky to perfectly pull off. I can do all the steps consistently but don't always land on the hat after the dive.

mario 3d land is a proper 3d mario, its simple but its still full 3d

i only finished sand kingdom right now but i gotta say that some of the moons were quite hard. the jaxi one for example got me killed a few times. sure even if you die there is almost no punishment for it but thats a general problem with mario games nowadays..

The game really became special for me once I went back to the first couple of worlds and started trying to collect everything. The sheer amount of stuff hiding in the nooks and crannies is amazing, and trying to get it all can become quite challenging.

Additionally, the game really, really opens up once the credits roll. It's where the true Mario Odyssey starts. Finally, that video with the crazy jumping getting Mario all the way up to the tall tower with the coins posted halfway up this page is something everyone should strive to learn. Once I began to be able to move like that, the game became much, much more fun for me.

I've been playing some of the post game content (
mostly the Mushroom Kingdom
) and quite enjoying it. I think I'm having a change of heart and the game is finally starting to click.

Got the game on Saturday
Already on New dong as I do not explore that much, I move as soon as I get the minimun, or so I believed.
I thought I would hate the city and find it boring, boy, it is a true playground for platforming, and I am not even that much of a fan of platforming and less of cities, I must be at twice the minimun already.

I haven't got a switch, but I have a Wii and 3DS. This thread is strongly encouraging me to go back to Galaxy and 3D Land, and get through the bulk of them both. I ran out of gas on both (I'm a pretty oldschool gamer) but at least Galaxy sounds like it's significantly rewarding..

Wow why is this OT so slow...??? I just got the game

It's slow because most people have moved to the "other place". The Odyssey OT over there has roughly 70 or 80 pages.

I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing, I like that I can keep up with this OT and read every contribution. It's more manageable now.

Well, I have to temper my exuberance now that I've tried the game in handheld portable mode. There's just no getting around the fact that MO plays best in split joycon mode. I mainly use my Switch in console mode, but for those using it largely in handheld mode the controls can be frustrating and disappointing.

Still a really great game, but "switching" has some real compromises, unlike just about every other Switch game that play about as well in both handheld or console mode (i.e. BOTW).

A patch offering more extensive button controls for handheld mode would be most welcome.

Ugh the
koopa free running races
in the post game are an absolute bitch. I can't do the second version in the lake kingdom for the life of me.

That and everyone's probably still busy playing.

It's certainly nice to be able to follow a thread and not have 30 brand new pages appear out of nowhere each time you refresh.
