Xbox's Aaron Greenberg: "We have a lot planned to show for 2023, you will not have to wait too long for what’s next for us. Timing is key."

I might be going out on a limb, but I feel like Starfield specifically will be a banger. Just hearing Sony tried getting exclusive before MS 1upd them and bought entire Pub. Then looking at Pedigree of biggest games (I ignore 76 as a quick cash grab). Altogether, yeah, I bet Xbox owners are in for a real treat.
I know everyone loves to laugh at me but Pentiment was great. Forza H was great. As a non Halo fan I really enjoyed the campaign and multiplayer for a month. Haven't tried Grounded but it seems good.

I think they'll put of pretty good games. They are slow though.

I wasn’t suggesting otherwise. I just haven’t followed the rest enough to have a strong feeling. Starfield I have followed, and I do think it will be a big hit is all.

Im not overly interested in Starfield but i might pick it up once i get my XSX for Ark 2 ( friends and I have over 4000 hrs on the first one)

it will be. & i can't really think of any other ms banger releasing any time close to it, so that's just as well...

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.

If you only care about first party games you absolutely are missing
What's the point of owning a first party driven ecosystem/system then?

Just game on the PC, it's what I do for third party games, and Sony/Nintendo machines for first party.

Pentiment is in my backlog since you've been praising it. I like those style of chill PnC like games to break up the standard routine. Yes, FH is good, own it on the PC. Halo Infinite, I played it at my buddies on his PC so I can see how it was. It was fun at first, then the repetitive go to checkpoint and kill angry ape mini boss while getting speed dialed by angry ape boss telling me he is going to murder me each time... wore very thin. Especially in a sole biome. I want old Halo back, so I stick with MCC.

Don't let my overhype ruin Pentiment for you but I sincerely, genuinely loved it. I hope you do too! It's definitely different.

"Timing is key", yet didn't bother to show shit at a show watched by tens of millions of people. How is this guy the VP in marketing? I was expecting another Starfield trailer or an Avowed trailer at best.
Asleep at the wheel clearly. Had six months to prep a new trailer for Forza, Starfield or Hellblade. couldnt be bothered.

Now if they had a great year then fine, but their biggest game Halo Infinite wasnt even nominated for GOTY. At least Forza was nominated last year. Sony could afford to not show up because they at least had a couple of first party games nominated. I feel like MS is so detached from reality probably because their community bubble just keeps them thinking they are doing a good job. Meanwhile everyone else is like dude wtf.

I think the problem with games like Forza, Starfield and Redfall is that they arent exactly story based games that can have a traditional 2 minute trailer. Starfield is not exactly a cinematic RPG like Mass Effect so they wouldve needed a lot more gameplay shots for it. Redfall is redfall. Meanwhile, Sony games can just show a bunch of cutscenes without having to worry about the state of their engine or whether or not the game is in development hell. Which is probably what they ended up doing.

I am actually very disappointed that sony first party had nothing at the show besides DLC. No spiderman, wolverine, SSM new IP, GG new IP, Bluepoints MGS remake, no ND's new game, No Bend game, No sucker punch game. Sony went an entire year without a show and relied upon third party studios to bring exclusives to the VGAs. The problem is that MS is so abysmal that the conversation is about MS instead of Sony. If Spiderman 2 isnt ready to show 10 months before launch, it is probably not ready to release in 10 months.

100% agree. That's why I said Xbox is not really playing to their strengths to have trailers at the game awards, up against star wars with a famous actor, and cyberpunk with Idris Elba and everything Sony does. They just aren't making games like that which I personally hugely appreciate. They're just weirder. Hellblade is definitely cinematic but most of their stuff is really aimed at hardcore gamers with an open mind which is why I'm really enjoying the weirdness. Sony is clearly a juggernaut. I get it. They do so much better than anyone. But I like the weird stuff that doesn't even work on trailers.

I dont think it will last forever. Im enjoying this weird period for as long as it lasts.

They probably dont want to announce a release date just to have it back fire again, like starfield. Which is good, fhey should wait unti they are 100 percent certain before they date those things

I just figured you wouldn't want to show loads of exclusives when you are battling with regulators trying to say you don't have lol

that and also though... wonder if they expected the deal to close and had a lot of Activision games in the reels

You don't need a 2 minute cinematic trailer to get people hyped.

What about a gameplay showcase with snippets of B-roll footage?

Hell, Fortnite has trailers ALL the time that get their fanbase excited.

Christmas is around the corner and the awards show is done. You're not going to hear anything from MS till 2023. So expect 3 weeks of dead time from MS. Looks like Greenberg basically unleashed a final PR message before it's holiday time coming soon.

DS2 is made by Kojima. A third party studio.

Sony first party was MIA aside from Horizon DLC.

Their trailer starts with the logo "Playstation Studios" and is being co-developed with Guerrilla.

It's no different than a first party title since it's fully funded by them and exclusive. Why would anyone care about those semantics? It's not their showcase so I don't know how you could expect much more than a handful of titles trailers which we got and DS2 is a big reveal.

I just want to know what the fuck is going on with everwild. Dropping a trailer like that then going radio silent for three years is a dick move. Sea of Thieves proved that rare could get back to form. Everwild was supposed to be Rares grand celebration.

They had b-roll footage though. In a couple of Xbox ads. Some new Forza and Starfield snippets. Just didnt do anything for anyone.

The failure is definitely on marketing which is led by Aaron Greenberg. How these people are still incharge after a disastrous 10+ years for Microsoft is beyond me. But thats part of the reason why they continue to disappoint year after year. Definition of insanity is doing the same thing while expecting things to change. Unless they hire new people and put them in charge, nothing will change over at Microsoft.

The fact that Avowed, Hellblade 2, Perfect Dark Everwild, State of Decay and Fable were all announced 2-3 years ago and still havent been revealed in non-CG form save for Hellblade is troubling because if they are taking so long to make then MS first party is basically going to be those games for the rest of the gen and nothing more aside from some Zenimax games. So basically all the games Xbox Series will get for the rest of the gen were announced before launch. Yay?

It's not semantics. I am literally talking about the sony first party studios and listed each individual one. I said Sony showed up with 2 games didnt I? What I want to see is Sony first party stuff because aside from Kojima, those are the studios who make games I care about. And they were MIA all year and are still MIA at the biggest show of the year. Skip E3? fine. Skip September conference. Fine. Skip VGA? The whole year? Whats going on?

The latest update we have is that the director left and the game still didn't know what it was

It looked gorgeous. How can they not figure out how to turn that into an interesting game is beyond me.

Seems like MS has a big problem with not having good leadership at any of their studios. Tons of turnover for their directors and leads.

Of course.

And I'd like Jim Ryan to show everything in existence right now but he's not going to do it.

Fact is, their presence at TGA is historically consistent, if not better than what we usually get from Sony at this show, and there's no reason to exclude DS2 because it's their published game.

Yeah I don't get it.

The top brass at Xbox seem to be protected and Nadella isn't placing pressure on any of them. I don't think any of their leadership has a clue how to run Xbox studios, but they get to keep their jobs because Nadella doesn't either. As long as they can spin some metric of success it doesn't matter if they actually have a competitive and good lineup. Phil is just a bean counter that cares more about business innovation than gaming content/quality.

I just want to hear something. I'm preparing myself for a gut punch that I haven't felt since True Fantasy Live Online was cancelled. It's painful when a new IP with such an appealing looking world never sees the light of day.

blah blah blah.

How do they not show up with anything for the game awards? Im glad that Xbox twitter has finally turned on them. They watch Sony games win award after award and still show up with two exclusives. Like wtf are their studios doing? Where the fuck is hellblade?

There is nothing consistent about Sony right now. They skipped E3 and skipped their september show which was their one consistent show the last two years. Even you told me that them skipping September means i should wait till the VGAs. Well, they showed up with DS2 and Horizon DLC. Better than MS but MS is abysmal so thats not saying much. Especially after skipping an entire year.

I really dont see how showing Wolverine in CG form a year ago then taking a year and a half sabbatical is different from what MS has been doing. Spiderman wasnt CG but might as well be, and its also MIA. I think Jimbo like Phil is getting way too complacent if he thinks he can just skip the entire year and rely upon kojima, square and DLC to satisfy his fanbase. GOW having a good day winning all those awards and MS having an abysmal day is giving Jim an out he doesnt deserve.

Looking forward to those long awaited gameplay trailers. 2023 could be a good year for them.

Their game award content this year is consistent

Their other shows are random

Roblox is really popular too. It doesn’t mean that I give a shit. Especially for Hello Neighbor, a series that sits in the 50 metacritic range.
If a game is really popular, MS might want to show it in the highlight reel of their service. Whether you like it or not is irrelevant when the game’s sequel is at 30+ million downloads, that’s what I’m trying to explain.

Aaron says timing is key, but what better timing than at the end of a year with no major releases to reassure your fans and to create hype and momentum going into 2023?

If Nadella and Phil are smart, they will have something ready before the end of the year to give a taste of what's to come. They can't leave 2022 without at least some CG trailers and some promises going into next year.

Now the question is, is Aaron telling the truth of Microsoft having a "lot" to show? I ask because why would there not be a conference then if the first part of this "a lot" we won't have to wait "too long" for?

i feel like there needs to be a staff shakeup sometimes.

I agree. They should have shown something. Big mistake by Xbox. Sony has been cleaning their clock lately.

Sony released a bunch of good games this year and announced DLC for HFW at the show. What they did was fine. They also had a big presence at the show because a bunch of their games kept showing up as nominees and winners, and one voice actor for one of their games took up half the show speaking. Microsoft might as well have not even existed.

No need for false equivalence here.

Fully funded by Sony? Where is that stated? I guess the money from the first game on pc that wasn’t distributed by Sony actually came from Sony too.

Maybe because they aren't at every show? They showed off a lot at E3 this year. Where was Sony at E3? MS has shown 4 games for 2023. Sony has shown 1, which is Spider-Man 2. And that was absent last night.
  • Spider-Man 2
  • Horizon Call of the Mountain
  • Horizon Burning Shores
  • Firewall Ultra
  • Stellar Blade
These are 5 PS Studios exclusive games scheduled for 2023. Then there are third-party exclusives that Sony is practically funding.
  • Forspoken
  • Final Fantasy XVI
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
So that's 8 exclusive games lined up for 2023 that we know so far. Most likely, there will be others that haven't been revealed yet, e.g., Helldivers 2, more first-party PS VR 2 games, and maybe even TLOU Online or Firewalk's IP.

Considering they delayed their games to put them all together in 2023, they will likely have something.

But the real question that most should be asking is, where are the 2023 games? Starfield, Redfall, etc. were supposed to release in 2022. So what did they plan to have in 2023, and when are those games releasing?

DS2 is made by Kojima. A third party studio.

Sony first party was MIA aside from Horizon DLC.
DS2 is published by Sony, and it's a Sony brand, so it's a first party game. In addition to the Horizon DLC and DS2, Sony also announced the Returnal and TLOU PC ports.

When a 1st party game is developed by a 3rd party studio, it's also called 2nd party game, but still is a 1st party game.

Considering they delayed their games to put them all together in 2023, they will likely have something.

But the real question that most should be asking is, where are the 2023 games? Starfield, Redfall, etc. were supposed to release in 2022. So what did they plan to have in 2023, and when are those games releasing?
Due to Covid lockdowns most AAA games under development back then got an aprox. half a year or a year delay. Meaning a lot of games originally planned for 2021 were delayed to 2022, the originally 2022 games delayed to 2023, the 2023 games to 2024 and the 2024 to 2025. Not only for them, but for basically all AAA publishers.

The thing is that most games affected by this still weren't announced or at least didn't announce its release date when were delayed, o in most cases you won't notice it and was only noticeable in the games that had date announced, like the 2021 Sony games pushed to 2022 or the MS 2022 games pushed to 2023.

Well you have to understand that they have a lot planned to show for 2023, and you will not have to wait too long for what’s next for them. :messenger_beaming:
I think they'll show mostly already seen games and a lot of indies that will debut on GP. Plus -once the regulator investigations get completed- a console and GP price increase, specially if the acquisition gets approved.

There's something consistent about Sony that when looking the whole year gets repeated every year: they announce and release more big exclusives, and got more awards from them than the other ones. Yesterday Sony's console exclusives got a dozen awards, 7 of them for internally developed 1st party games.

In 2022 Sony made many announcements at events like CES, E3, TGS and VGA plus in many other State of Play and PS Blog posts. Not only to announce new exclusive games or PC ports of old games, but also to several acquisitions including Bungie or Haven, PSVR2, the new PS Plus, eSports stuff or OS improvements and additions like adding VRR, 1440p, PS5 Tournaments, or the start fo Discord support and PS1 + PSP emulation.

Death Stranding is a first-party game. It's published by Sony, which is the definition of a first-party game.

This is exactly why Microsoft Flight Simulator is considered a first-party game, although made by Asobo, an independent studio. And it's exactly why Forza Horizon was always considered a first-party game, even though Xbox acquired PlayGround in 2018.
