Xbox players are greeted with a full-screen pop-up ad for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III when they boot up their Xbox console

What does this haver anything to do with this? All digital has no bearing on this, you could own zero digital games and still get the ad.

Unless you mean how stuff like this wasn't possible years ago when things weren't connected online in which I would agree but it's the world we live in now. We can't go back to the 6th generation glory days of soul.
Of course we can’t go back, but all this is happening due to the fact that people accept the “all new digital” lifestyle generally.

When I buy a console for 500 or 600 bucks, this is unacceptable.

Spread's Cheeks for Intrusive Ads
Do you know how much an ad like that would be worth? You have to manually exit it, meaning you are guaranteed to have seen it. Every Xbox owner. It's far better than a super bowl commercial even, and it's targeted at the younger demo everyone wants to advertise to. Hell, it doesn't even have to be just games. They can start selling ads like that for Doritos for millions. Movies in the theater. Anything.

Not gonna happen. Its obviously intrusive (though, mildly...) and they've never done anything of the kind, like, ever.... Doubt they'' start now. Stop fearmongering. This ad thing is ridiculous. Good grief..

They literally have it patented and that was one of the main things they were focused on with their TV push on 360 / Xbox One.

They wanted to take over the cable box because the kinds of ads they can sell are far, far more advanced than a television. This was when they had an infrared camera, voice recording, buttons and motion options. Of course they want to do this. They're the only company that also has a foot in broader tech, like Google (makes 100% of their money on ads).

I did give them the benefit of the doubt on previous ads, but this goes well past anything we've seen before in key ways. It REQUIRES you to interact with it. It's FULL SCREEN. It's on START UP. None of this is fearmongering. You're just being too slow.

Jesus, I know people have different tastes, but being okay with getting pegged everytime you turn on your console is crazy. Xbox fans deserve what they get.
Of the 3 current console brands I own, the only one that doesn't show me ads when I turn it on is Switch.

I was expecting to get this over the last few days even once, but I have booted up my console multiple times to play Starfield and I haven't seen this ad once. Maybe it is targeted to those who play a lot of multiplayer?

Dont think so. UK, single player focused, dont usually play CoD. GPU subbed.

Bro, this isn't even about console differences. This about trying to stop this shit now. Gamers need to make a fess about this. First it's on Xbox, then it's on Playstation and everywhere else. Greed knows no bounds. Companies need to know doing shit like this is radioactive to their brand.

Nothing quite like faux outage. I pay taxes and gas money and a vehicle license fee and I still have to see billboards on the street and ads on park benches! The horror!

This has also been a thing on the Switch since it launched, except you get three of them and they happen every time you turn the damn thing on.
On the streets and park benches? I don't own the park benches and building walls. Next time you turn on your car and it tries to sell you stuff on its dashboard come back and make the analogy.

You only have to look at the original design last year for the current dashboard to see where this was going. It received overwhelming negative feedback and rightly so , it was like a magazine page advertising gamepass it was that obnoxious and of course they put out the “we hear your feedback “ shite once again.

If so many are bothered about this they probably use that line yet again.
But they responded and made the dashboard even better. One splash screen for each major first party release doesn't bother me. Fans of Xbox might even think it's kinda cool if the ad looks good. Also, you wouldn't believe how many people are just unaware of these releases. I have 2 friends with Series X consoles who hadn't even heard of Starfield before it launched. Now, if we start seeing clutter everywhere on the dashboard, that could be cause for worry.

Make it the default. Bury an opt out in the options menus.

Not sure what the criteria is.

No CoD ad on my Xbox, but the PS5 dash always has a CoD ad when I boot either console.

I didn't get the Starfield or Forza ads either, but then again I already had the Starfield premium upgrade so I wasn't the target there ?

Well I didn't have premium, but when I saw the Starfield ad I was booting up the console to PLAY STARFIELD :messenger_beaming:. I still think there must be some kind of targeting info, like they knew I had dumped 500 hours into previous Bethesda games or something

I was a pretty big CoD fan back in the day. I lost interest when they turned all the maps into arena style "3-lane" maps for eSports. I was mildly interested in this one since it was all maps from the old school MW2 and MW3 but I can't stand how they force you to install Warzone and other shit for like 100+ GB. They can just fuck off as long as they do this. I tried the beta but, it didn't feel the same as the old school games.

I guess they didn't release the MP for MW2 Remastered because they wanted to use the maps in another game down the line (namely this one) and they knew everybody would just play the old one if given the choice. They saw how MW1 Remastered's MP canibalized their new CoD that year.

Are you seriously complaining about a flash screen that you just click "cancel" to remove it when you boot up your console? I swear gamers are getting worse and worse, will bitch at absolutley anything. Turn off your internet and you wont get it, happy now? First world problems...

This is how it starts. Look at this cool fella over here who doesn’t care about ads being thrown at you as soon you start up a console you suppose to own.

This is how NPC’s sorry meant people like this guy will react when this crap escalates.

*Are you seriously complaining about a flash screen that you can cancel.

*Are you seriously complaining about a 5 sec ad just cancel it when time runs out.

*Are you seriously complaining about a 10 sec ad before you start your game… seriously gamers these days

*Are you seriously complaining about a 20 sec ad in game?? Bro it took you 20 sec start it might aswell wait 20 sec more.

And on and on it goes.

Yes we have the right to seriously complain about shit we don’t want on a console we already bought, shocker!!

Having free games built-in isn’t similar.
IIRC, unless you previously purchased singstar songs, all you could access were 1 minute demos. I have no qualms with demos (advertisements for games) being pre-installed on a console, but I have never heard someone describe a demo as a free game.

You guys brushing off forced ads is part of the problem. What you do not seem to understand is that it doesn't get better from here. Regardless of whether it is on my phone, TV (yes that happened), game console or another device, it is not a net positive for me. A click here, a click there isn't the issue. It is where things are headed and the best-case scenario is we see more of this behavior. I find it a bit funny that we have had boot up comparison threads here but people are okay with delays to load/click past ads.

Yeah I didn't get any of those ads either, but like you I had the premium Starfield upgrade, maybe that keeps it off the dash?

I don't think it's so much people who are pushing back on criticism of this, are arguing against the right to complain, but more so this notion that not being outraged by a forced ad on a plastic toy equates to being naive, and being outraged means you're a sophisticated intellectual.

Thanks for letting me know to stop giving this company any more money or attention.

This shit is fucking gross.

My opinion is that in a free market, if you're putting up with this, than you're actively choosing it and deserving of it, and on that path it will only get worse.

Microsoft and the people engaging in this lose my respect.
What are you even talking about. How exactly is this market free? You pick your system(s) and paid up to 500 for them,. You can't just move to another player. And even if the cost to get involved wasn't there, there are only a few players and they all have a ton of market power because threre is so little competition. The market is extremely constrained. Free markets are mythical things that might have existed in large cities in the 1700s or so.

I also find the drama ridiculous. This game is popular and the ad can be skipped by system setting or closed by a button. For those that buy the game annually it is probably a convenience. For those that don't, it is hardly a bother.

My PS5 alerted me to both the Spider-Man 2 and Horizon DLC preorders. It was so gross and offensive I threw up, shit my pants and then bought both of them because I bought my PS5 to play Sony games.

It's no exsuse for this kind of ad. They have ad space already on the dash board, or they could have sent you a notification, but instead, they give you a splash screen ad that you have to interact with to dismiss. That's disgusting and shows a lack of respect.

Let me say it slowly so you can process it:

You should never have to click through an unwanted ad to get to the core functionality of the product you own. The end.

Imagine if you turn on your phone or TV, you have to dismiss an full screen ad before you can use it. Would you tolerate that bullshit? I sure as hell wouldn't. The "drama" is 100% justified and people like you who are quick to minimize scummy behavior like this is why we currently live in an advertising hellscape where everyone is trying to plaster ads on everything for every tiny bit of content.

The adage of "give them an inch and they take a mile" is apropos. Keep making excuses, keep downplaying it, and they'll just keep pushing the envelope until ads are embedded at the BIOS level and you can't play a game without being forced to deal with embedded ad-breaks.

Somehow no one complains about movie theatres feeding you 15 minutes of ads before a movie you paid for...

..but Microsoft putting a one time splash ad of a 1st party ";)" game that can be dismissed immediately is world war 3.

Something tells me its just some more COD hard feelers... since they've already done it for Forza and Starfield and no one gave a shat.

You don't have to interact with a trailer. You can go late. Those trailers also suck and tons of people have stopped going to theaters entirely. You don't click 1 button while watching a trailer to spend $100. The trailers don't magically surprise you when you're doing other things and block you from accessing it until you acknowledge and interact with it.

The only legitimate concern.

Half a second... push b. You have to interact to do ANYTHING on a console. Does your console just start playing games for you?

The idea that pushing B once is more an inconvenience than 15 minutes of movie ads is hilarious.

HALF A SECOND NOW. Jesus dude, think ahead. Have you ever seen ads that are longer than half a second? Use your imagination. Have you ever seen ads on the Xbox dashboard that aren't first party? Have you ever seen ads on the Xbox dashboard that aren't even for video games? I have.

Does it make sense now or are you just going to continue your mission to downplay anything I say?

Slippery slope... slippery slope.

Welcome to earth.

DVD's had forced unskippable ads 20 years ago. Did that get better or worse?

The internet is plastered with ads and Xbox still has one of the most unintrusive ads on the internet.
A picture you can skip in a millisecond. A tile that does not overlap anything else or play sound automatically.

All that is so far from the bad stuff you encounter everywhere else, but people like to hate on this for whatever reason.
