Eternal Darkness is a bit of a weird game. I think I enjoyed it so much back in the day because a. the pacing is fantastic b. you're constantly being sent to new, interesting environments (or revisiting places you've been but in a different year c. the continuity between the characters was actually fairly interesting d. magic system with the runes and whatnot were kinda cool and e. exploring the house and finding its secrets was kinda cool.
when I tried to replay it a couple years ago, I was a bit surprised at how poor the voice acting was, how bad the writing was, and how clunky the controls were... but it was still a compelling experience because of the fantastic pacing. you're always going somewhere new. if you don't like the current area, dont' worry - you'll be done it in 20 minutes. it really felt like an adventure!
it's pulpy but not excessively long in the tooth. I think that's why it works for me.
How about you start hearing Dennis Dyack's confrontational interview on the 1up Show (or was it EGM's podcast) where he confronts Mark McDonald and pontificates on philosphy, scrupulous and unscrupulous behaviour, norse mythology, the gaming media, etc.

Eternal Darkness 2, featuring their most terrifying sanity effect yet. If your meter gets too low, the game transforms into Too Human.
