It's ridiculous how bad this was, for a console launch. Remember the GameCube showreel with Metroid, Pokemon party, Luigi? Or the N64 showreel with Mario Kart, Zelda swordfight, Star Fox, Body Harvest prototype, Blast Corps truck, Wave Race muscle boat?

Sure, all of that stuff changed a hundred times before release, but it got us salivating for their new console, dreaming month after month about those experiences.

I can not comprehend how Nintendo failed to grasp this simple concept. They still had it with 3DS.

The chiba must be good because I wasn't that disappointed with this conference. Hell even some of the minigame got my attention, hopefully they are priced that way. Ubisoft could've showed more of the games, but judging by some reactions that might be too much for some.

In a nutshell

I understand if your more into yet another 2D mario or Pikmin(That actually looked great) the conference would be better for people but considering that this is a system launch it is automatically the worst of the 3. Sony and Microsoft are clearly getting ready for next gen but even then they gave people that already own their consoles a reason to be excited for something. Halo 4 for Xbox, GOWIIIA, Last of Us for PS3. They just needed stuff to tie you over till the next systems and they did that. Nintendo had a small window to blow everyone away and get a great lead on the next systems but they completely squandered that. I am sure they are going to show great looking Nintendo IPs in HD next E3 but going up against brand new tech + Unreal 4 and the hype that comes with OMGZZZ THE GRAPHXXX! I feel they really messed up.

Make no mistake I feel the same way. If it wasn't for Pikmin and Mario I'd think this was easily the worst conference I've seen. Even their Pacman E3 didn't leave me this disappointed.

NintendoLand took way too much time to explain. Time that could have been better spent at least hinting at what Retro is working on, or what 3rd party games are scheduled for the future.

Right, but the thing is even with a dull launch you should back it up with promises and teases of things to come.

Even with the mess the 3DS launch and software follow-up turned out to be, Nintendo still showed off the idea of lots of games and support. Game logos for franchises that aren't on portable platforms. Developers pledging support. Hell, they even had a bunch of characters and scenes from Nintendo franchises and games rendered on the system's hardware to show what it can do (these came to us as the puzzle swap picture things).

A lot of those games got cancelled, or never appeared at all. And some of those developers produced nothing of value. But the idea of support was there. Momentum.

Last year Nintendo showed off a tech demo for Zelda Wii U. No game, just tech, to show visual capabilities. This year they don't even have a sizzle reel showing their franchises in HD. Absolutely nothing to show of their IPs, and the future of Nintendo franchises, except Pikmin 3 (which will be great), and New Super Mario Bros. Wii U. A side scrolling Mario game.

Cue casual software, a karaoke game, the bafflingly and poorly presented Nintendo Land, and a bunch of old third party ports.

For me, someone who games on PC, there's no momentum. No momentum of third party support or games that might interest me, and by that I mean software I haven't seen or played before (Rayman is the only except). And from Nintendo themselves? Just as little. No tease, no promises, no gossip about any of Nintendo's future software. No tech demos. No conceptual footage. Pikmin and Mario.

They basically gave me no reason to rush out and buy a Wii. They gave me reason to wait. That's kinda shitty.

This is it right here. They didn't do any teases at all. And at the same time it doesn't feel like they talked about/showed 23 games.

So I have to ask, based on this E3, what lesson did Nintendo supposedly learn from the launch of the 3ds?

Release system selling software day 1? Price perhaps?

Do you think 3DS would have struggled out of the gates with NSMB? I don't. Did 3DS have the kind of 3rd party games Wii-U does? It didn't. If they nail the price then it seems like they learned quite alot.

Will give them one thing, having a focus on the continuing use of Wii peripherals will probably pay off in getting the casual market to upgrade.

I dunno how big a Star Wars fan you are but where's the Episode 3 love? I rank Ep 3 right behind Empire Strikes Back, don't drag the second best SW movie of all time into this debacle, Clayton. (Pearl voice)

agreed, wtf? Episode V > Episode III >>>>>>>>>>>> than every other Star War movie including the super cheesy Episode IV

Nintendo Land has to be a pack-in. I just know it.

It should be an OS level thing. That hub thing they showed off should be the game. Just like some devs did with Home, Nintendo should get developers to make something for their next game that adds into Nintendo Land.

Did MS focus on the core the last 2 years? No.

Sony spent half their conference last year talking about hardware philosophy and on glorified E-Books this year.

Apples to oranges comparison Daschysta.

Sony and Microsoft were selling new platforms on existing hardware.

Nintendo needed to sell a new platform and new hardware, they largely accomplished neither

The only halfway logical explantation I can come up with is that Nintendo saw how BAD the other two's conferences were and decided to not blow their load this year and have nothing to show next year when Micro and Sony are unveiling their new consoles.

How else can you explain Iwata not being on-stage?

Ok, is that the metric fans on here are using to judge games? They should be ecstatic about the conference then! NSMB alone will probably sell more than every new game announced during Sony's conference combined! :rolls eyes.

Holy crap Daschysta. Just having some fun.

I love Nintendo too but you're way too quick to defend her honor.

This is just like last year when people claimed that the games in the WiiU game reel looked worse than the 360 versions of the same game when in fact they were 360 versions, how predictable

How could the batman game be the 360 version? Isn't this version exclusive to Wii U?

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Yikes. Was busy all morning and expected GAF to be filled with all sorts of announcement threads and excitement surrounding Nintendo.

I suppose I'll watch the train-wreck later.

We know jack shit. EA is on board ? What the fuck does that even mean ? It means nothing. You think if they were really totally on board they'd bring Mass Effect 3 to Wii U ?

You know what was lacking ? Any 3rd party software. No Take-Two. No Bethesda. No Capcom. No Square-Enix. No Activision. That's about as embarassingly bad as it gets.

Edit:
And all this 'We're focussing on launch software' crap ? Why ? You're telling me more than half the industry doesn't give a shit about your console ? Not even sports titles ?

uh...they are

Kajima, I like your posts. But there are really no excuses for the product they put out.

We know there will be other games for Wii U. We always know Nintendo's developing something. There'll be a 3D Mario, a Zelda, etc. But E3 is a stage to communicate your vision for your console, its future, and its library. It's the perfect time to give little morsels to whet your appetite. We got nothing of the sort here.

The launch lineup as shown didn't reflect the learned lessons of the 3DS.

Most of the stuff shown here we've seen before. And they didn't really excite a lot of us then either.

Couldn't agree more. Just compare their 2006 conference with this one. A huge difference in quality.

And no support from EA or Activision..? What the FUCK is going on..? FIFA, Madden and Tiger Woods are all ideal for the U GamePad and we've seen or heard NOTHING about the U getting a SKU of those titles. Unbelievable. And no BlOps 2 either..?

We needed to see a sizzle reel of Zelda, a 3D Mario, Metroid, Retro's new title, Monolith's new title. Cast your mind back to 2006, we had all that and more.

I told you all to keep your expectations in check.

Pikmin 3 and Wii U supporting two Wii U GamePads were the real bombs here

So depressed.

What's the chances of seeing more games at the developers round table?

RETRO!? :(

HOLY SHIT!!
You're back :D
and about your question...expect nothing hype-whorthing from it.
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice
I must be an idiot :(

I'm disappointed, Nintendo. Really disappointed

These sorts of things take time to plan. I doubt they changed their conference much in the span of a day.

Huge mistake. Nintendo needs to sell people on the system now. By next year, it will be too late.
Well, this explains my confusion anyway. When looking at the list of upcoming titles (http://media.nintendo.com/pressroom/E32012/WiiU/WiiU_Upcoming_Games_List_E312.pdf), I only spotted eight third party publishers. That's worse than for Wii I think.

Ah well, hopefully more titles will be announced soon. The whole conference was in my opinion mediocre. Good presentation and knowledgeable speakers, but content wasn't that appealing (apart from Pikmin 3 and the Super Mario titles of course).

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
Reggie said on GTTV that their E3 showing, unlike the 3DS reveal at E3 2010, was focused only on launch-window software, which at least explains many of the first-party omissions. That was a pretty big mistake, IMO.

Oh GOD! What a HORRIBLE decision. Look at the highly succesful e3 debuts for GameCube and Wii... all showed or teased stuff that would eventually be year two titles... with Wii Galaxy... with GameCube Metroid Prime (not to mention SpaceWorld Zelda+Mario).

the large number of tweets for Nintendo's conference Geoff I'm sure are negative. i couldn't understand it any other way.

I liked the conference, but appearantly no one else did, so what do I know.
Plenty of games I'm looking forward to, plenty of features I like, and 3DS is getting full attention tomorrow.

Ah well, I guess I'm just easy to please, judging by the complete fallout that is going on here.

Its just that the im too hardcore to like nintendos games crowd that is the most vocal. I just hit 30 and I actually Liked all the games I saw at the conference.

Pikmin looked great , I liked how they used the controller in Wiifit. Also some of the games had gorgeous effects .

I also like the idea of nintendo land.

Think about that.

There never was a NDA. There were never any games to begin with.

Shyamalan.gif

Edit:
Seriously though this is much worse than my worst case. Just look at all the 3rd parties that are not on board. Not even a fucking sports title by EA at launch, all EA has is ME 3 and that's after they even got time at last year's conference.

I believe there was an NDA for certain titles, but I don't think there was for all third parties. It's kind of sad because I expected a shitload of third party announcements but we didn't get that much. Nothing looks interesting aside from Rayman Legends.

The real truth is hardcore gamers dont even know what the fuck they even want, so companies are pretty much shooting in the dark like a drunk mercinary trying to figure out what they like.
This is literally the opposite of how I would describe the strategy of major publishers. They are, in fact, releasing the same games over and over again, leaving many gamers to yearn for the days when publishers shot in the dark trying to please them.

I don't see why it was that bad. Assuming all the games were launch window it's an incredible line-up with sequels to the most popular games of the generation, a new Pikmin, some major third party games and the usual mini-game compilations that demonstrate the controller's new features.

Just because we didn't see them doesn't mean that there aren't lots more first party games being developed.

Oh and WTF at their dashboard? Sorry but I'll take XMB and Metro over that.

The main menu is on the pad not the TV.

...why does Nintendo always give the good stuff AFTER their conference? Smash was also revealed similarly.

Tech demos aren't games. Rubber duckies, you know. Aside from that, Pikmin and 2D Mario aren't exactly known for pushing the graphical boundary of the systems they're on. (Yes, Pikmin looked very nice.)

A bunch of ports wouldn't do that either.

Gonna take Retro and an EAD to really show what the Wii U can do.

you missed the point, dude.

it's how they presented the damn conference that made it seem like there were no games, when the frikin console ins coming out THIS YEAR. that's why it's a terrible showing.

I didn't mean that Arkham City Armoured Edition was a 360 game, I meant the whole "it looks worse than the 360 version" is the same kind of crap from last year, its imaginary.

Yes this is quite sad. Really Nintendo didn't do much of anything to give us that new console excitement. Pikmin 3 was the closest they came but even that game didn't have enough newness to make me get hyped.

It was hardly a train-wreck. It was simply not very exciting aside from a few parts and especially not as exciting as the second-coming GAF thought it would be. If you treat e3 like a religious rite, you will be very disappointed though.

Miyamoto has to understand that they totally lost their Wii sports audience to iOS and other consoles gimmicks.

I don't know if it's the actual Wii U launch line up, but it seems all the western third parties want Nintendo dead so much. I mean, just porting stuffwould make a decent launch but most of the companies chose to ignore. Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, Black Ops 2, Hitman Absolution, there are many opportunities for quick cash. If they are thinking "There's no target audience there", then Nintendo should better close their western branches because, you know, they don't have target audience in west. Damn you, stupid western 3rd parties.

First of all, we have no idea how easy it is to port things at an acceptable level. It's not like the thing has a ton of overhead (if any at all) that allows things to be done sloppily.

And second, there's no user base. Maybe they didn't think it'd have much of a base this year. And those that were buying Wii U will be what? Core gamers are going to buy the blockbusters on the system their friends play. So whose left? The casuals? There's no guarantee casuals are even going to buy this system. And if they do, they're not going to want the games you're mentioning.

As far as I'm concerned, Nintendo's issue with third parties are self inflicted and they have no one to blame but themselves. There's no conspiracy or agenda here.

I think this conference wouldn't have been as bad if only Nintendo had been a little smarter with its reveals. We knew Pikmin 3 and LEGO City were coming, Mario was shown off at last year's E3 (and there's another 2D Mario landing this year), and Nintendoland wasn't going to generate much excitement among those watching the conference live. That said, add Wii Fit to the equation and I don't think you necessarily have a bad first-party launch window for the platform. But the problem is, we have less to look forward to than we did last E3 now that the initial titles have been properly unveiled. We know Smash is coming in the not-so-near future, it's pretty much a given that there are teams working on Zelda and 3D Mario, but the same could've been said after last E3. Of course the third-party showing was rather lacklustre, but that's a problem in and of itself.

Iwata's absence was also rather peculiar when we know he's in LA. And since there were people inside Nintendo definitely watching the Internet this time, it's hard to imagine that they didn't know this type of showing would disappoint. I wouldn't be surprised if something went wrong behind the scenes to lead to this conference, but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.

that's it Nintendo I'm done, your conference has made me bitter, disappointment and as if something had died inside of me.

All you care about is showing mario and pikmin games to the audience, you don't care about the hardcore gamer at all, wheres Startropics, wheres F-zero wheres MACH RIDER?????

Even worse you couldn't even show a good 3rd party game at all!
nobody plays games like Batman arkham city, Mass effect 3 or Raymans all we want are Call of duties, Modern warfares and Halos! and yet you didnt show a SINGLE FPS game at all!

That's it gaming is done, pack your bags folks lets all hail our new savior and overlords the mobile market! I can't wait to sell my Wii and all it's games for a new ipad.
