I think it's something you'll get used to and not notice all that much in most games.

Hm, I hope so. I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to new hardware, I've had a lot of problems in the past with faulty machines. So I tend to get a bit nutty when it comes to new stuff.

Hearing about the yellow screens are a bit of a turn off... Is it something that should keep someone from buying one? I mostly wonder if it will be an annoyance that just will make you pissed.
Or I'm just being overly sensitive..
dsi vs dsi XL had the exact same issue. I don't think anybody's been particularly offended by that.

It had? Surly enough I haven't heard people complain about that.
Yeah, its probably just me being over sensitive for the whole matter.

My original DSfat had yellow screens and Nintendo let me exchange twice before I got one with non-yellow screens. They even paid for the shipping but that was back in 2005 so who knows how they handle these issues now.

My DSiXL screens were a little yellow but they were at least the same color temperature. Honestly, if I'd bought from Best Buy instead of Amazon I probably would have tried to exchange it.

My dsi has same-temperature screens. My XL has a notably warmer bottom screen, whereas the top one's temp is the same as dsi's. The XL's view angles trounce the dsi's though (or heck, any other ds' view angles).

I'm really not sure but as others have mentioned Nintendo buys screens from multiple sources so there isn't much consistency to whether you get cool or warm screens. It looks terrible when the two types of screens get mixed which is why I kept exchanging my DSfats.

We have seen plently of pix of 3DSXLs with cool screens though so we know for sure that they exist. I'm planning on picking up mine from Best Buy and I''ll definitely be bring it back for another if I'm not happy with the screens.

Edit: I quoted before your edit ;)

That would have driven me nuts, Nintendo should really look out for issues like that.

I think there's a difference between a warm white (like snow, not eye-searing fluorescent white seen on so many uncalibrated LCDs) and yellowish white, though.

Here's an example of my DSi XL screens. Too bad I don't have my DSi or 3DS on this trip for side-by-side.

People are just too used to 'cool' screens.

It's partially preferential in nature, but teh colour temp of your display should actually be adjusted depending on ambient temp.

I definitely prefer warmer screens, as they get vibrant colors. Only issue is when there's a huge disparity between the two screens. If it's consistent, it's just like incandescent 'white' light -- your eyes adapt to the color diff, making it a nonissue. I'm gonna tough it out w/ the JP version I'm importing but the US ver I'll likely buy from Best Buy so I can exchange if panels are drastically different.

Nintendo's Pro Bono PR Firm
Zen Pinball is so much more enjoyable on XL.

I was hesitant with the 3DSXL, but I'm loving it. It gives games a second life, from GB titles to ambassador games, with DS and 3DS benefiting the most from the extra immersion.

I'm transfarring my stuff now, the XL looks so much better, and I prefer the warmer colour screens, thankfully both are the same tone.

I also picked up Ghost Trick for DS, it was only 9€ so I couldn't resist.

The hardest part about moving from a DSi to a DSIXL was the shitty yellow screens on the XL. Not only that, but the touch screen coating made the lower screen appear darker than the top.

dsi vs dsi XL had the exact same issue. I don't think anybody's been particularly offended by that.

They got so many complaints that Nintendo had to add messages on their support page explaining why the screens look that way. Blech. If the 3DS XL is as yellow as the DSiXL, I will not be pleased.

Amazon's exchange policy is amazing. You were silly for not using it.

Finally got my Internet behaving to do the transfer. I swear Tales looks better on this, and Ocarina of Time is just brilliant. Can't wait to try out Resident Evil Revilations with the max 3D setting turned on in settings.

I never noticed yellow screens on my dsixl. Does the yellow just look worse in photos or something?
Don't know about photos, but in person it's not so easily noticeable unless you have two white images on both screens.

It looks worse when you're actually using it. I much prefer bright white to yellow whites, so I loved the DSi, but hated the DSi XL's screens. But the larger screens of the XL were more important to me ultimately, so I kept it. Basically you just pick what you value more, and for me it's going to be the ability to play my games on much bigger screens. I honestly can't stand how small the 3DS screens are.

room simulatiom in stereo. Works so great because you are always in front of the speakers.

google virutal haircut audio, download it and try the best set of headphanes you have.

also: for prerecorded stuff, the binaural microphones are crazy awesome. You know, thatse head shaped things.

I googled. That was amazing.

Still no videos of the white version? Meh...guess I gotta wait a couple days.

I am still thinking of getting this but if I do that means that I won't be able to get a Wii U at launch. The more I think about the more I don't want to get a Wii U at launch, especially since I rarely play on home consoles anymore. Only three games are confirmed to be play only on the Wii U controller but even if it was all, the easyness of the 3DS with sleep mode stuff makes 3DS the only system I play for the most part anymore.

Then another factor is the colors. NA only gets 1 freaking color and its the color that I already have on my 3DS. I usually like to change things up, but I wouldn't mind getting the same color its just the black looks really bad on the inside of the XL.

The Blue and Red XL's look so cool and if they were actually blue and red I would probably get one but no, they have to be black on the inside of having which makes the entire thing pointless. Whats the point of having red and blue on the top and bottom if its black on the inside? For one color that might be okay, but both colors in NA aswell as even a third color in EU and JP has a black on inside, different color on outside scheme. It makes no sense, why can't they just fucking release a red and a blue model? They shouldn't have even bothered makeing red/blue/silver, theres no point to any of them when the inside is black. The black just doesn't look good on the XL. It does on my regular 3DS but not XL. I guess Matte black just doesn't look good to me.

Ugh...but those screens. I want them so bad. I just wished that they released just ONE color besides black but nope. All they released was black. Wow.

Sorry for the pointless rant its just makes no sense to me why these colors excist at all. Why didn't they just release a black model? I admit, the two color scheme does look cool but to have it on all colors? Expecially since black just does not look good on the XL? What were they thinking?

It puzzles me why they are even calling them red/blue. They are not red/blue unless they are red/blue on the inside!!!

...Maybe I just need to see it in person. Anyword in when gamestop, or any other retailer in US will get them to display? (They might not even put them on display, idk.)

I guess I can wait for a different color. What really saddens me is the fact they will probably never actually release a red/blue color. So sad since the red/blue on the black XLs look good...

See. You don't need super high end amazington hardware to get awesome results at home.
it's all in the hands, time and money people and willing to spend while developing their product.

also, thanks that you read, googled and tried it. ;)

So many thoughts...

Therefor: YES!
by which i mean: NO or maybe MAYBE!

Yellow screen only bothers me if the touch screen is whiter. It's the screen difference that bothers me. But if they're both the same then I don't mind.

I agree completely, WiiRevolution. I don't like any of the colors here in NA and EU.

It gets me so mad that White is exclusive to Japan and will take months to get to NA, if it ever does. The color/black models look really tacky to me. White's the only one that looks sophisticated and nice to me. I need a completely solid color before I jump in... I can wait. The normal 3DS size is good enough for me... as long as I don't see an XL in real life. :p

I'm just hoping for a good special edition come Christmas time.

Thanks for posting that screenshot, I asked for one many pages back. That's also good to see, really looking forward to the 3DS XL.

Well this is a company that releases a handheld that when you close the lid will put a honking great mark down the top screen. The 3DS is a mess as far as design goes. Both aesthetically and technically.

My Flame Red 3DS has a red tinted upper screen and a yellow tint lower screen. But it is something you just don't notice while playing and the color seems more intense.

The only thing i don't like is the fact that both screens in my 3ds don't have the same tint which is very noticeable while using the internet browser.

I really can't stand warm images for some reason. Is buying a 3DS XL basically going to be rolling the dice? Is there any chance to get cooler screens? If so, where would be the best place to purchase one (in the United States) so I can easily exchange it if the screens are either warm or mismatched in temp?

I haven't seen a cool screen in pictures so far, so there probably aren't any.
