There’s no arrogance like Sony arrogance.

(1) Was there some sort of mentality of invulnerability or inevitable success permeating the company, or could there have been some PR doctrine requesting everyone simply come across as being as ridiculously, absurdly confident as possible?
First option. Just like Atari. Companies tend to get arrogant and it's very annoying. Sony is just unrivaled in this aspect, they'll be all smug and condescending even from 3rd place.

(2) Did comments like those listed above tarnish your opinion of the Sony brand in any way, or were you happy to dismiss them as eccentric ramblings of detached execs?
No, it just makes me chuckle when they fall on their face after saying absurd things. And I still like and buy their products, so yeah.

(3) What's the silliest/most ridiculous/your just-plain-favourite quote?
DS being for kids who like Pokémon, when official numbers show the DS user base being older than the PSP user base at least in Japan.

(4) Am I being unfair - is there a company in the industry that has provided more arrogant quotes than those above? (Examples please).
No, I don't believe there's one.

some of them are true though.

Who can deny that the wii was pricey? Oh yeah, the ps3 was more expensive. yeah, an airplane is more expensive than a fishing boat alright.

I remember clocking in 9 extra hours at work and getting a second job just to buy a wii.
But hot damn. Was it worth it.

I never paid much attention to PR (smack)talk, but going through that list of quotes was great. Can't believe some of those are real. Some of the reactions in this thread is are icing on the cake.

There's a tiny number of possible responses, tbf to people calling this a shite thread

a) lol Sony
b) Sony are fine regardless
c) This is a pointless thread, waste of effort
d) Entitled to arrogance
e) lol butthurt Sony fans
f) lol insecure MS/Nintendo fans

I remember during E3 2010 that I expressed a distaste for the arrogance showed. I told people that Microsoft (I'd never seen an E3 presser before 2010, so I had no idea what to expect) seemed genuinely excited about Kinect. Sony, on the other hand, with Kevin Butler and Jack Tretton's snide remarks about the competition, just seemed full of it.

Whenever I watch the big three on stage, I feel like Sony's got this "we're better than the competition" mentality, while Nintendo and Microsoft seem excited to be there and love talking about how great the stuff they have is.

I feel like this translates into their consumer base as well. I remember shopping for my first console, and when asking which one I should get, the Microsoft and Nintendo owners were like "well, I have this, and here's why I love it," but the Sony fan? One of them started off by calling me a "fucking piece of shit" and proceeded to tell me exactly why the other companies sucked. He wasn't the only one.

In general, it feels like Sony, both the company and its fans, have an arrogance that is just... not something I enjoy at all. Can't even have a discussion about why the Dualshock is ergonomically bad for the human hands without insults getting slung. :(

Fact: Xbox 360 is a way cooler console than the Playstation 3 because it doesn't have Halo and has baby games about raccoons being thieves.

Yamauchi-era Nintendo iirc. Although, probably in action more than words. But there are some nice quotes if anybody can be bothered to find them.

Here's one:

Hiroshi Yamauchi said:
People who play RPGs are depressed gamers who like to sit alone in their dark rooms and play slow games.

That's one of my favorites. I want to say this was said shortly after Nintendo lost both Final Fantasy 7 and Dragon Quest 7 to the Playstation.

Nothing wrong with quote threads.

Sony keeps calling Dust 514 a AAA shooter and they really mean it.

Seriously?

Now it's just sad

The thread is now is complete troll fest

I love how the people that wants their lulz and using the comments quoted by Mama are now not even considered, using post comments now... wow

They were also more expensive than the 360 and the two are nearly identical in terms of what they can do.

Oh, just a couple.

MMMMMmmmmmm I feel so warm on the inside.

So good.

Come on guys, don't get so defensive and salty. Nobody's attacking you, and the OP isn't even really an attack on Sony - just a discussion starter about how some executives could have said so many things that seem so arrogant, whether that had an effect on Sony's image overall and to you, and whether or not it points to a problem endemic to Sony's upper management.

On topic, those quotes in the OP are hilarious in their arrogance and shortsightedness. Clearly the Playstation 2 put Sony at the top of the world, and folks in management thought they could do no wrong. Clearly they were mistaken.

I will say that the single most arrogant quote out of this entire generation actually came from Microsoft, with the infamous "ya know, things break."

You random quoted a lot of people who just pointed out this thread being bad, nothing defensive or salty about that. Read better. Now you'll probably say I'm salty because dare I criticize what I find to be a bad thread. The ones who are taking this too seriously are people like you and the OP, there's nothing to discuss about stupid PR quotes, it's just the daily dose of hate most Gaffers need to vent their frustration, a typical day on NeoGAF.

I don't recall gamers complaining about the Wii's price back then. If anything, people complained about how they couldn't find any in stock at retailers.

What a blast from the past. Sony's arrogance was quite amusing and not just because they were funny, but how out of touch they were. I'd love for Sony to try to defend those comments now that we have a very clear picture of who was victorious and who wasn't and how Sony's plans have unfolded over the course of these 6 1/2 years... and there's still 4 to go!

As a PS3 owner and supporter I find those quotes right , Sony made huge mistakes this generation but PS4 will be other kind of "animal" it will destroy next Xbox, and no matter if I have to pay $800. U.S. to see that piece of mighty hardware in my entertaiment center.

does anyone have the thread where some guy tried to prove that god must exist because of a gran turismo sunset or some shit? i've been looking forever for that thread.

Damn, look at all that salt!

Really? Cause their own Planetside 2 looks way better than Dust 514. Are you sure it was Sony who said that? If so wow....

It's developed by CCP so maybe they said it? Otherwise Sony as the op shows, and like other companies do, likes to hype their exclusive products. not that there is anything wrong with that, but consider the source as they say.

There's no thread like a Mama Robotnik thread.

Seriously, I'm getting some awesome nostalgia from these quotes!

My two favorite are the $1200 one and the "We don't even need PC" one. I miss you Arrogant Sony. <3

God I love this thread.
;D

Yeah, i exaggerated with the example to fit the madness of the thread.

No one can deny that wii was overpriced. So that quote may have been directed to the technology used for the launch price... hell, it only makes sense that was the reason since ps3 price was already unveiled at that point. So yeah... some of the quotes look dumb as they are taken out of their original context.

Hey, just like this:

"A bit pricey." (Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of SCEA, on the launch price of the Wii)

Original context:
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/10/sony-australia-wii-a-bit-pricey/

They were also more expensive than the 360 and the two are nearly identical in terms of what they can do.

Included a bigger hdd and a blu-ray player (that according to the internet, shouldnt have)

Ya, no. Digging up dumb PR statements is not constructive, I don't care who posts them. What is the purpose? You don't simple find this stuff, it takes work with motivation, what a waste of energy.

I'll leave you guys to your virtual high fives, enjoy.

That was largely due to the high cost of blu-ray diodes at the time IIRC (plus the cost of the Cell). Had Sony not decided to go for BD as their disc format the PS3 would most likely have been quite a bit cheaper. In hindsight it is definitely arguable whether it was a good idea or not for Sony to sacrifice console sales in order to boost the BD format.

If HW rumours are to be believed, 720 seems like it'll have superior specs.

Oh man between this and the Kamiya thread I've been rolling on the floor. All the people asking for this topic to be closed and getting butthurt are funny as hell.

No one can deny that wii was overpriced.

Well since the market decides the prices of things, I can certainly deny that.

If it wasn't for the recession and people not being able to hold on to their second jobs, people would have been able to afford a PS3 by mid-2008. Truly an unfortunate turn of events for Ken.

It was a while that we didn't have a "it's cool to hate Sony" thread.

STILL, I must admit it was funny to read you collection of quotes even if I don't care much about what corporations can say.

I don't know...it looks pretty bad to be honest. It should have been a PS4 game since you need a lot of ram and horsepower for mmo FPS's. Planetside 2 on the other hand looks awesome! I hope it comes to PS4.

Not sure why there ate so many upset defenders in here.

The OP doesn't suddenly make the PS3 a terrible console with no games that is no longer for sale.

The company's feeling won't be hurt by this thread either.

This thread was made this morning (AU Time), but I'm still going to go home tonight and play post patch MGS4.

What are you guys getting do upset about. Sony has been arrogant for yeeeeeaaarrrs. And?

put this in the list too.

There was also an interview with Jack Tretton saying that MS must be embarassed that the PS2 was outselling it at launch... then the PS3 launched and the PS2 was still outselling that as well and did outsell the PS3 for many months. Was an EGM interview I think.

Someone needs to make a list of all the Sony fanboy quotes and post them at the end of the thread, hell I might do it myself if I have time because the levels of butthurt in here are astonishing.

So this is what gaf is turning into?

It's neat to re-visit them in the context of how things have actually panned out. Also, they're kind of hilarious. And totally in a laugh at the person who said it way, as opposed to laughing with them.

Where have you been? It's been 'cry about Sony' week for awhile now. =P

It's also apparently been white knight week. Reading some of the people in this thread you would think Sony was in almost as bad a position as RIM

Then MS and Nintendo haven't done anything disastrous... amirite?

It gets funnier when you realize that the butthurt people in the Kamiya thread are the same people crying in this one.
