SONY needs to change the controller for the PS4

They need to make it more ergonomic and more durable. The plastic feels mega cheap, the battery is good the first year or so, and they do get points for making it rechargeable outta the gate(lol Nintendo n Microsoft dbl A batteries). But the battery does start to lose charge more quickly a little so after a year, depending how much you use that controller.

The button layout is perfect, and as you can see, regardless of taking Q's from Nintendo. They set the standard for the modern day controller. So the dualshock is fine, and they do not need to change much. I hope they keep the motion detection, I'm sure it'll be cheap as hell next gen anyways, so yeah.

Lol, expect a mini touch screen on the next controller.

They could change the triggers a little but the rest is pretty much perfect for me, I do also have rather small hands but I want to keep this design, pls.

Edit : Oh yeah and I forgot this cause they never leave my controllers, but changing the analoge sticks to have the ones in top here would be good too

Only change needed is the L2/R2 triggers. Controller is perfect. Perfect size and perfect layout.

Who ever thought the 360 placement of the stick made sense? Its an eyesore and its retarded when playing.

Dualshock is fine like it is. I like the 360 controller better, but Dualshock is fine.

I think it makes sense. That must make me a bad person.

I am surprised at the number of people who think the DS3 is perfect. Even if you disregard the analog sticks, how can anyone think that the triggers don't need to be redesigned or improved? This can't be a preference thing.

Even though I vastly prefer the DS3 to the 360 pad, i'm not against change. All I request is the next iteration is better. Change just for change's sake when you have a very solid design is dumb.

The 360 pad is what it is because the OG xbox pad wasn't that great (RIP Duke though, other than your weird tiny black and white buttons you were awesome). They had improvements they needed to make and they made them. The 360 pad is a big step ahead of the controller S. If the PS4 pad is a big step ahead of the DS3, good... i'm all for it.

Playstation's controllers are garbage. The sticks are in the wrong spots. The divided up button-like Dpad is trash. The triggers on the DS3 are horrible. Context sensitive buttons are a bad idea too - especially on a worn down pad. Awful all the way around.

Sticks are too loose. Buttons don't feel good to press. Triggers feel bad as well. Vibration is too strong. Clicking of sticks doesn't feel right. A mediocre controller. Needs massive improvements for me to consider a ps4

I never understood why any company sticks to 1 design. Keep the DS in the bundles and sell a 360 controller clone on the side. Please everyone. Just for the love of god go back to the old r2/l2 please. And maybe beef it up a little, like the ps2 Logitech.

I dont see why people see offset sticks as an advantage. It's just different, not better.

It may help for shooters, but sucks for other types of games. If you want mainly shooters, maybe a Japanese system shouldn't be your first choice anyway.

The best selling games on that Japanese system are shooters. Also, the first three sentences of your post contradict each other, don't you think?

"It's just different, not better; better, but worse."

Hmmm...I personally don't think much needs to be changed but there are areas where there could be subjective improvement;

1.) Shorter Concave Analog Sticks that are spaced further apart
2.) Sides of controller are curved to fit in the natural curves of the hand
3. L2/R2 replaced with actual crescent/moon-esque triggers
4. Lengthen and Widen the controller so that its comfortable for all hand sizes
5. Finally a textured rubber grip on the underbody of the controller would be a good addition

Everything else is fine. DO NOT Sony, I repeat DO NOT mimic the 360's analog stick layout nor its D-Pad nor its button setup; the triangle, cross, square and circle are synonymous with Playstation so don't change that and I hate the 360's analog setup, makes my hands feel odd. DON'T CHANGE THESE THINGS!!!

I think he's referring to first person shooters which typically don't sell well in Japan but this is just my interpretation of what he said.

It's not offset sticks that's the issue for me. It's the left stick being in the wrong place. The controller is based on a design from 1997 when hardly any games used the left stick as the primary input. Sony just tacked some sticks on to an old PS1 pad. When I pick up a pad, my thumbs/fingers should fall naturally on to the primary controls. Only people with lobster claws for hands can say that about the DS3.

I agree that controller is the main reason I use the 360 more than the PS3. Way too small for my hands and I hate the stick placement.

But my thumb can rest on the D-pad or the left stick without any problem. I played thousands of hours of Pro Evo using the left stick for 95% of it with no strain on my thumb.

every time I see this discussion, people always say they want more stiff analog stick, I assume what they mean is that the analog have more resistance when you move it away from the center, why do people want this? granted I only use 360 controller a couple times on pc, but I always have easier time with subtle movement with ds3 analog, with 360, because it snapped firmly in the middle, I need to use a bit more force to move the stick and usually make me overshoot my aiming when I just want subtle change.

now I admit I've seen some pretty old ds3 controller where the analog has gone loose, as in it'll sometimes register movement even when you didn't touch it, I assume this happen because the stick didn't snapped back to the center properly, but this is because of faulty hardware due to long use or just played too roughly. new ds3 don't have this problem. so maybe they can work on the build quality, but as far as the analog stick resistance goes, I think ds3 is great.

I'm sorry—I said that all the Dual Shock needs are those little L2/R2 extenders, but that's clearly not all it needs.

It also needs clear buttons + d-pad. That way, when they make controller variations, they don't look like garbage. Go the Vita route, and we'll be cool!

The controller is mostly perfect, a few tweaks on the triggers and we're good

Just don't use the 360 triggers. Worst shoulder buttons of all time.

I know I might be the only one, but PS3 controller felt just right for FIFA/PES and atrocious for FPS games compared to the 360 controller for example. Not sure if I'd change it though, but I did dislike the weirdness of the L2+R2 buttons.

Apart from L2/R2, the controller does not need to change.

Even then, they feel pretty nice when playing racing games. But that's the only genre they feel nice in imo.

I like the symmetrical placement of the sticks and I've got big hands. No I don't have "lobster hands". I actually like that the big three have different layouts with sticks, it's kind of funny.

Licorice-flavoured booze?
All they need to do is use the trigger off the move controller, which tbh I think they will do next gen anyway, and like many have already said, concave sticks like on the SCPH-1180 would be a welcome bonus.

I have to agree that the DS3 is terrible. I mostly prefer keyboard and mouse but when I use a controller give me the 360 pad.

The Dual Shock is the single reason I dont play só much on my PS3.

If they dont chance, I dont see me getting a PS4.

this is horrible, the way I hold my ds3, it'll be to hard(well, not that hard, but not as painless as it is now) to reach the right dpad, it's less an issue with analog stick because when I move the stick to right, my thumb don't actually stay on top of analog stick and reach all the way to right, but my thumb is just pushing the analog stick to the right, my thumb is touching the left side part of the stick, so my thumb don't have to go that far to move the stick to the right.

They need to change the layout of the sticks and make the move trigger the R2 and L2 default buttons for the PS4. For those wacky gamers who think the current L2 and R2 buttons are "perfect", just make the current controllers BC. Thats a win/win for everyone.

No. Im sorry, The 360 is a perfect controller in every way compared to the sixasix. Seriously.

360 controller shoulder button (I think it's called bumper?) is not in ideal position. in 360 controller your index finger lay naturally on the trigger, but switching from trigger to bumper is not as seamless as switching from L1/R1 to L2/R2. this is actually my main problem with 360 controller, I don't mind the dpad, or the stick placement, just the bumper location.

It's not very comfortable in my hands and feels and looks 20 years old... In a bad way.

Sony needs to upgrade it or risk coming off stale and archaic. It's not perfect and it needs serious attention.

Better triggers and that's it. Don't fix something that doesn't need fixed otherwise.

Maybe if they added a layer on customization to it where you can swap concave, convex sticks then it'd be even better, but I can't see them moving the left stick and angering some of their old fans. I'd be happy with two models but it'd make for a confusing launch for some people.

I always find these threads hilarious, as the Dual Shock is an abomination of a controller... the left analog stick placement is hideous. My thumb doesn't work that way, so even though in some ways the 360 pad is inferior (D-Pad) it's size and basic placement of sticks makes it the superior controller of choice.

I think so many praise the DS because it's what they are used too, but it's a crap controller.

Why does your right thumb work that way but not the left?
