I still want this:

Earthbound could look great updated for a modern console.

wow, the wind waker link style kind of suits this game. I still think earthbound has its own style, but if they did it in cell shading style like that it could be awesome!

Having a real guide in my hands is way more preferrable to tediously printing out scans
iPad.

That is a ridiculous price for the game. I would never pay some random collector that much money. Just send Ito a $5 check in the mail and emulate it. I wonder if the giant stacks of $10 bargain bin boxed copies I remember seeing at TRU all ended up in a landfill somewhere.

But yeah, as I said in earlier posts, Iwata and Itoi really need to figure out a way to re-release the game. Even if it means combing through the whole game and editing whatever the lawyers are worried about, rewriting some of the jokes and replacing some of the pop song riff tunes, just do it!
They obviously don't care or it would've happened years ago. They spent the money and dolled up Mother 2 for us 300 years ago and we let it rot, so fuck the US forever. They've had the chance with the GBA re-releases and with the GBA sequel. Fuck NOA.

As awesome as this does look, I would take the pixel art over this any day of the week.

Even though I mourned the passage of Earthbound 64, it was ugly as sin even when it was first revealed, and the long delay was totally worth it for the sprite alternative we got. There is just something distinctively Mother series in the specific pixel art style they go for, and since Mother 3 was already an exponential advancement visually in terms of animation, I can only imagine what they'd do on a 3DS or a Wii U - provided they can avoid the trap of feeling they have to make a 3D game instead of a 2D one

Yeah, I clearly remember as a teenager seeing the EB 64 previews in Nintendo Power and instantly thinking, "Ugh, that looks bland!"

Man this thread really makes me want to replay earthbound. Oh wait its almost 200 fucking dollars.

At this point it seems like the only way we'll get a rerelease in America is some kind of downloadable anniversary update...

Back to playing the game again, I need to finish it before Wii U is released!

The mole maze in the desert was annoying. First lie/mistake of the player's guide: 'Besides the moles, you'll encounter few foes in the caves.' Yeah right, except the million poisonous snakes, giant ants, ducks and noose men you'll have to deal with before and after every mole battle! Thank goodness for exit mice.

I also didn't like how after finally finding and killing all five moles, you don't get the diamond unless
you wander back to the bridge leading to Twoson to trigger receiving it.
Talk about unintuituve. Oh well. Once again the clueless Runaway Five have been bailed out and Paula's been kidnapped by an alien that lives in a mega mall. The plot thickens, good times. :)

You also get it if you
continue east on the highway to Fourside. The miner guy should catch up to you at the bridge and give it to you
. That's how I always got it.

Not that it bothers me but your post has the most random spoiler tags, lol

lol Well, I try to tag stuff related to progression but yeah, I guess they're all over. :p And it's funny, the
Fourside bridge
IS actually where I went, that was a typo. So I learned something new. :p

Still my favorite game of all time (maybe Super Metroid, they always battle it out for the top spot). I actually only played it for the first time about 10 years ago. Living in Europe means having to miss out on most classic SNES releases. I always read EGM as a kid and the moment I laid eyes on Earthbound I was sold. It looked so charming and...weird. I loved it. Much to my dismay the game never releasd in Europe and with the internet not being prominent at the time lead to me just forgetting about it for a few years.

But then when the internet became something everyone has, the game got in my mind again. I could just order an ntsc SNES online and a copy of the game and finally play it! Of course by this time the game was hella expensive and being a purist means I wouldn't settle for an emulated version.

So I bit the bullet and bought a mint and complete version for $200,- (cheap in hindsight, I think my copy would fetch up to $400,- nowadays) and an ntsc snes. After a bit of heartache (the snes was busted it turns out, so I had to buy another one later on) I was finally able to play this game I wanted to play for years and years. It felt like christmas the moment the game started up. You guys know the feeling, it's almost magical.

Anyway to make a long story slightly shorter; the game was everything I hoped it would be. Such charm and the music, my God the music. Simply glorious. I've been replaying the game recently and it holds up perfectly and I think it always will.

Mother 3 was as good a sequel as one could hope for and it probably is the better game when push comes to shove, but nostalgia is a powerful thing and to me personally Earthbound will never be topped.

My favorite game of all time, have beaten it over 15 times since '95, and I never knew that this could happen, lol.

Also, if you think the mole caves were annoying, just wait until you need to go to the monkey caves...

Thanks. Porky and Poo figures are next whenever I have some extra coin.
It sucks that they're so expensive, but sometimes you have to splurge when you want something cool. I know I did:

The rest of the gang, normally I have them spread around my game room, but that would mean 10 more pictures.

Wow, that is an awesome collection (both the figures and the games). Is that a Foppy figure I see? I need to get that Dr. Andonuts figure to put next to my Jeff. Banpresto makes quality stuff.

The figures look really cool. I know that the Fobby and Shark figurines are from Fangamer (basically the Starmen.net store) and are quite pricey, but they're handmade. How's the quality?

One thing I wanna say is maybe I'm spoiled but item management in this game can be pretty tedious and your item menus themselves get really messy in no time. Escargot Express has been getting more business from me lately. :p

The excitement you guys are showing for this game has convinced me to dive in tonight. I'm a silly Brit, so this game never came out here. But now my computer can HDMI to my TV, so I will play through on that. Even tempted to use blaarg's NTSC filter just for accuracy.

Good luck. It's a great game. I was actually replaying it again but school and Steam making it hard to stay on track :p

This so much. =( I decided to take the last three of my "filler classes" in one go along with a computer class and I'm really regretting it. It's so much work and I barely have time to play because my mind is always on the upcoming tests.

And yes, Earthbound/Mother 2 is still one of my favorite RPGs ever. It's so unique (using teddy bears as shields to take damage? Awesome) and a great departure from all the usual fantasy RPGs. It def stands out and I always wanted an RPG that was sort of like modern day.

SAY FUZZY PICKLES!

I've never opened the packaging, but they look to be quite sturdy with some great detail.

I shall load it up shortly. How much do you think will be lost on a Brit that hasn't experienced the American culture so prevalent in the game?

The Beginning

What an amazing title screen!

So I looked up the canon names for things because I am the kind of person who always names the main character Link in the Legend of Zelda games. Cloud is Cloud, Crono is Crono and Ness is Ness.

Dgjtg.png

Once I had entered the names, I read that the "Don't Care" option would have done this for me. Oh dear. I can tell this is going to be a bumpy ride already.

Started playing the game again the past few weeks after getting distracted this fall by my Sega Saturn collection and then the Wii U launch. Logged in over two hours today, finished the awful Moonside (who knew Fire Hydrants and Gas Pumps could be such vicious enemies?), finished the monkey maze/got the Teleporter, put the smack down on a ton of robots, rescued Paula AGAIN, helicopter scene, repaired the Sky Runner and just got to Dr. Andonuts lab before going back to Stonehedge. *whew* Hopefully Itoi's plans "to republish Mother" will result in good things so a lot more people on both sides of the ocean can play this game.

I cannot believe Nintendo hasn't ordered a cease and desist on that Mother 4 fangame. That's pretty blatant calling it Mother 4 and all

And just landed in Summers aaaaannnd the Skyrunner blows up, noooooo. :( Anyways, time to find a place to save my game been playing all afternoon but at least I'm making great progress.

Nintendo have never, ever been bothered by fan games and rom hacks.

If its being sold for a profit though, theyll shut it down.

That's pretty nice of them. I mean, it's one thing to say you're inspired by Mother 4 and another to literally call yourselves "Mother 4."

I honestly am a huge Mother fan and have no expectations for the fangame, considering it's not made by the core team that game me the series I love, but I hope it turns out well because I'll definitely play it. But I just think it's a little pushing it too far to call it Mother 4, this is Itoi's series and he deserves the right to say if a game is the 4th in his series.

Duster looks too trendy/fashionable. He's supposed to be an unkempt, smelly weirdo with a limp!

Duster, as a name, seems odd to me whenever I see it. When I first played Mother 3, I named him "Wanker", and the name stuck.

Other names Ive called characters on each playthrough:

Kumatora: Arse Man
Flint: Rofl
Claus: Bastard
Hinawa: Jack Bauer
Boney: Ass Dude

...im on a new playthrough right now, and ive still named them the same.

If you're a buyer, ebay is safe as anything. Buyers have all the power on there. You should have no worries whatsoever.

If youre a seller, avoid - purely because buyers have so much power to potentially screw sellers over.

Earthbound is an enjoyable RPG. There's nothing else out there that quite matches the atmosphere of the Mother series.

With that said, Earthbound is more than a fair bit overrated.

Having played Mother 2 and e extensively, I do have to say I prefer 3. Reasons include the improved battle system and the goddamn amazing story.

Reminds me, I just ordered a new Pokey figure from Banpresto's "large" Mother 2/Earthbound figure series, will go nice next to my Ness and Jeff figures (which I have pictures of earlier in the thread for any folks reading for the first time), will hopefully get it in the next week or two. Also, all of my Earthbound items have been bought off eBay and I have never been scammed. I've been buying rare game items off eBay for about 13 years now and have only been scammed once (back in early 2010) and eBay refunded my money fast and punished the dealer (they were eventually banned not long after), their buyer guarantee program works very well in my experience.

This thread is making me want to replay Earthbound and Mother 3.

I'm really hoping Itoi's mysterious comments about "something" happening with Mother means they're making whatever tweaks they need to satisfy NOA's legal team, and an HD release of Earthbound on eShop is coming.

I'd consider buying a WiiU for this.

Here's the issue I have with this (Mother 3 specifically). Let's say they do release it in NA and translate it. I honestly have little faith the translation will be better or equal to the the fan version we currently have. I can see them remove and change many things since they could be deemed as "weird" or too foreign for the NA market. Like the Magypsies for example and the hot spring scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3W53p2m35oc

Regarding Mother 3 content that would potentially have to be adjusted, I read there was a character in the game that supposedly seemed to mock Muslims a bit or was that subjective/exaggerated?
