VGleaks: Orbis Unveiled! [Updated]

Why does this thing have more CU's than a HD 7850, but less Texture Units than a HD 6570?!? Doesn't make sense. I think these specs are not "accurate".

I think the '18 texture unit' thing likely spilled out of something saying that there were TMUs inside each compute unit. So someone along the chain of this info said 'oh, 18 then'. When it's probably just the same number as in every other GCN chip (4 per CU).

Just a guess though. It makes a little bit more than taking 3 TMUs out of each CU for no apparent reason...

Why are people doubting the 400 price? There really isn't anything that expensive about this, except maybe the RAM which I bet is multiple times more expensive vs Durango.

I thought one was working on new GT5 content and the other on GT6?

We really don't know what's going on at either studio. Initially 50 employees (including Kaz) moved to the new Fukuoka studio. That would mean that the majority of that staff was still located in Tokyo. And all of their recent hirings give people to the option to work in Tokyo or Fukuoka.

Charging more than $399 is suicide. Microsoft is going to get there again, and Sony had better match them this time.

Now, if Sony can get two controllers and a camera in there and still get to $399, then that's fantastic.

You think Sony is going to release a system without a motion controller as standard when it's a given that MS will launch with one? THAT would be suicide.

Is there hope that the GPU will be beefed up a bit ?

As it stands it's a good budget machine but from Sony I expected a "cutting-edge" console, but as I've said on page 1 it's still a nice improvement over the PS3.

How does what we know about the GPU compare to a GTX680 ?

I know that's what disabling cores for yield improvement is :p What I'm saying is, I don't think that's what the spec is referring to. I think the 'balanced for 14' means something else. Probably a little detail or elaboration missing from what they copy-and-pasted...
Ok heh. Yeah it is a weird statement. Need more context.

yes most games (console) run at a solid 30fps @ 1080p and don't tear or drop the framerate.

come on man.

There are games on PS3 and Xbox 360 that run in 1080p @ 60fps with no tearing.

First of all... Why would 1080p even be standard for 2005 era hardware?

Either the 14 CU is wrong or the 1.86 TFLOPS is wrong.

1 CU standard unit at 800mhz -without added scalar- = 102,4 GFlops.
18 CUs x 102,4 = 1,84 TFlops.

So

14 CUs x 102,4 = 1,44 Tflops for the GPU
4 CUs x 102,4 = 0,410 Tflops for either GPU/GPGPU tasks.

Awful is relative. It's slower than an i7 or even i5, but that's because consoles don't have the same requirements as a desktop PC. There will be much more emphasis on the GPU this time around.

if you still believe the old "OS overhead" chestnut I have a couple of HD consoles to show you.

Only one SKU is interesting to me, and 500GB is nice. I swapped out my dinky little HDD in the PS3 to a 500GB early on.

It's early and I know everyone is kinda speculating on price, but does anyone believe there's any substance to the rumors of a subsidized contract price? Like, you pay $99 or $150 to get the console on contract and pay $10 or $15 a month for a while and get PS Plus or something tossed in?

I can't really comment on the rest of the hardware, I simply don't have enough knowledge of how these numbers translate into a console made specifically for gaming.

I really just want to start seeing games footage. I want to see how developers USE these fancy doodads and thingamajigs.

I really don't even care how the console shell looks, it's gonna be hiding in a TV stand.

That "balanced for 14 CUs" sounds mighty suspicious. Maybe that's why some people claimed that "it's a wash" between Durante and Orbis? What does "balanced for 14 CUS" mean?

Maybe two are shut down to improve yields? If any CUs are faulty that way they can just turn them off and stay within spec. I'm guessing though.

no way is a 14CU southern islands chip pushing 1.86 TFLOPS.

Thats not what I meant. I meant that maybe they have a software/hardware mechanism that would switch a reserve set of CUs to CPU tasks. Normally they would be regular GPU CUs.

I know, Im really throwing shit at the wall.

Unless there is something to the CU side, which is hard to interpret with what they have said.

Not enough RAM, that's gonna bite them in the ass.

And when you consider that the playstation 4 is designed to last another 7-10 years that amount of RAM looks extremely and i mean extremely pitiful.

In an ideal world they should be targetting upwards of 8gb.

Sony electronics should really take charge here instead of SCEE.

Peripherals:

Evolved Dualshock controller
Dual Camera
Move controller

What the hell, so will this come with a camera and a move controller as well. Also what do they mean by evolved Dualshock

No. Sony isn't going to start bundling multiple peripherals/cameras with their consoles. They've never done that. Nobody does that. That stuff is meant to be sold separately for $$$. Expect a single dualshock to come standard and the rest to be sold as accessories.

I don't know how it can be more than that. There is really nothing outlandish in the specs to push the price that high. There is no first generation Blu Ray players or anything like that this time. The exciting thing about these specs is they are extremely streamlined.

What about the RAM? Wouldn't that be pretty expensive (I'm assuming they're doing some sort of stacking to get those speeds)?

Interesting...

maybe, i'm more inclined towards yields though. which makes using the original number to base a TFLOP count on super sketchy.

Perhaps because of power and heat related issues. Sounds like the GPU is not all it is being cracked up to be. Then again, the leak may be incorrect in this regard because it does not make sense.

It's 7.5 times more ram dedicated to games compared to the ps3. And much faster. It's more than enough.

I wonder if the extra computational unit is real or not. Only place we've seen it mentioned is the Digital Foundry leak. It would be nice if it was there to offset physics calculations since those are going to be super important next gen and that would take a tom of strain off a Jaguar CPU. I'm kind of skeptical of its existance at this point.
