Full PS4 specs, console and controller [Blu-ray drive confirmed]

So with these specs...what are the chances of 1080p standard for games?

There will never be a "standard" resolution or framerate. Fighting games and twitch shooters will most likely still target 60fps and go with whatever res gets them there. "cinematic" games will target whatever makes them prettiest and give you whatever framerate and resolution they can manage.

From an architectural viewpoint the PS4 is, well, pretty boring. So we
essentially have a PC++. That's fine, nothing special. The one thing Sony got
right big times is the bandwidth. 176GB/s lets you pull a lot of sophisticated
algorithms/formulas/equations into action. I can see great things coming.

I still want to hear how they pulled off 8GB GDDR5. Everything about what I was learning about the design of these components got tossed out the fucking window with that revelation.

Some people believe they are better than all of Sony's engineers combined.

Do we know if the PS4EYE will be bundled with every console?

It seems like a next-gen Kinect to me....

I think it will

That's what I'm wondering. Maybe in a premium SKU?

I think it'll be on all SKUs, they won't want MS to get all the Just Dance and Dance Central casuals with the Kinect push. PS4Eye is way better than kinect even though it'll probably be inferior to kinect 2.0. I think the main difference between SKUs will come down to HDD size just like the PS3.

Games were a bit underwhelming, but Sony seems to have nailed it from a hardware perspective. I couldn't be happier with the specs or that controller.

But camera and mic bundled? This is gonna be expensive. :(

Controller doesn't have a Start button.

How am I supposed to get past intro screens?

The same way I always do it: X

Splash screens are relics. I get taken to a screen with a logo that tells me to hit a button - just so i can actually get to hitting buttons that matter.

Anyone else see how silly this is? It's like video games want to make sure I'm not an idiot... "press a button to continue... good! Good! You pressed a button! OK - now to the real menu!"

Seriously. They are trolling us every damn splash screen

Is the BD 50GB or 100GB/XL?

Also, the BD speed is 6x, only 3 times faster than the PS3, it's a bit disappointing, no?

no, if memory serves that's roughly equivalent to a 24x DVD drive at average read rate.

There will still be installs and load times but they will be in theory 1/3rd of the PS3's and maybe not even noticeable if clever streaming methods are used.

I wonder if the next xbox will do anything different to avoid installs.

this seems like everything i would like in a PS4. pretty dope. looking at the DS4 compared to PS1 dualshock feels like we are really in the future. sheet. wireless, with lights and motion and shit.

So how does that "instant play" work when you buy a 20 GB game and can start playing when it's downloaded for just a few minutes? I guess devs push important assets up front and just load later game assets in last? That seems so cool.

I assume it uses the Gaikai.

We didn't get any info on Hard Drive space right?

Mark Cerney said it was "massive." Of course, he also showed a picture of a paintbrush when he mentioned the GPU so massive could mean anything really. I bet the base model has 320GB.

I don't know if anyone posted this or not, but per IGN, ps4 will play used games

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/21/sony-exec-playstation-4-doesnt-block-used-games

This seems like it deserves it's own thread.

For convenience, DUALSHOCK 4 can also be charged with smartphone chargers via USB.

Finally! I never understood why the DS3 was only allowed to be charged via PS3/PC only.

Official chargers gave that much revenue? Or why the need for the controller to be recognized for the battery to be charged?

I just hope it's not a 4+4 split between gaming and OS. That would sound like a waste of GDDR5.

Unified ram doesn't work like that. Any part of the system can take as much or as little ram as it wants provided its available, you could have 6GB for graphics and 2GB for OS/CPU tasks or you could have 6GB for OS/CPU tasks and 2GB for graphics.

Its flexible.

So, I dunno about anyone else, but for me it's the sticks that are one of the biggies here! Indentations! I always hated my thumbs slipping off the old dual shock sticks.

I like the evolved controller.

Considering how obscured from view that light on the back is, it seems utterly pointless.
Yeh, I don't get this. They say it could be used to inform the player about health etc, yet you're going to have to rotate the pad around to actually see it. Weird.

That controller is actually pretty damn sexy up close (highres screens). No START button is crazy though...

So is that headphone jack for mic/headset only? :( I was actually really excited to have it like the WiiU where you can plug your headphones in and listen to the game that way...

My god, dat RAM..

I'm super curious how MS will react to the RAM advantage Sony clearly have over their system. Then again this press conference tells us we weren't 100% accurate with our info.

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
Can that be still subject to change?

I addressed this earlier in the thread. My take:

AC currently performs anywhere from worse than N to barely better than N in real-world scenarios, so I'm not surprised. There's no point in supporting a draft spec when it offers no tangible advantages, is subject to significant changes (e.g. N going from 150Mbps to 300Mbps) and the final spec isn't due to be standardised until the tail end of the year. Maybe in the PS4 Slim, though.

These specs are just incredible. I'm glad the PS4 is designed to last into the future. It benefits all console gamer in the long run.

Funny though seeing PC gamers comparing their RAM to the PS4, no PC gamer has 8GB of unified GDDR5 RAM. Its not the same.
