Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate |OT|

Yep, when I stop moving at all and find the sweetspot the 3D looks great. Then when I start moving and actually play the game, all I get are double images. It's pretty much unplayable to me. Conversely I have no such problems with a game like SML3D. It seems to be less of an issue on the smaller 3DS than the XL, but there's no way I'm giving up the big screens. I'll be fine playing the game in 2D.

Τry lowering the 3D intensity, it might be more forgiving when moving. I think this is one of the games worth playing with 3D turned on...(Imagine a Metroid game with so good 3D and graphics...)

Had to cancel my Newegg preorder. It had my old address on it. They said they would try to speed up the new order and apply a $10 credit on it.

I played the demo and sorta liked it. Castlevania has always been 2D to me so I guess this is going the right direction, even though the combat feels GOWish.

Yeah, the chains/whips and combos feel like a 2D God of War. I'm sick to death of that series, but somehow Mirror of Fate felt fresh to me. People have been complaining about the platforming, but I think it's pretty great.

People probably fell off a cliff and expected to survive, before realizing that gravity was their master and not the other way around.

This is something I've forgotten to try in the demo. Can you make that huge leap and then at the last second double jump and live?

Nope. There is a certain amount you can fall until you essentially fall to your death. I was able to double jump onto the chandelier though in the Church. So you can't say fall 100 feet and then abuse it.

I liked the IGAvanias and I also enjoyed the demo for this game. This is still Castlevania, it's just a different flavor of Castlevania. I look forward to picking up my copy tomorrow.

that's the one positive element of platforming. the real problem is how pointless the fall damage is because the platforming is so painfully easy and bland from what we've seen. it's too bad because if they toned down the swinging/ledge climbing and integrated the dashes, double jumps, stomps, and floating it could be pretty good especially if they some hazards and enemies to the mix.

Oh wow, epic trolling by Mercury Steam with that Wii U in the background. :lol

heh, I guess that's because that breakfast was celebrated in some kind of Nintendo installation (they are distributors of Mirror of Fate in Spain if I'm not wrong).

Play the full game first. I was watching videos of the game before he had double jump and the guy was falling quite a bit due to a mis-timed jump.

I think Nintendo is publishing the game throughout all of Europe.

Still, it's a hell of a funny coincidence.

Okay, so I started playing this a few hours ago. I'm not sure what all the complaints were about. It seems to be immaculately well made, with all the production values that you would expect from a console game, the combat seems to satisfying in a God of War 2D action game kind of way, and the framerate, while not perfect, is certainly not as offensive as people were claiming that it is. Was there a section of the fanbase determined to hate the game no matter what?

Another thing to add, the music is quite good when you use headphones over the 3DSXL speakers. It builds on the existing style from LOS1.

Pretty good on the actual 3DS (I have the original model) speakers too; it seems to approximate a really neat surround effect.

EDIT: Let's deal a bit with the negatives so far:
a) I don't like the lip synch in the stylized cartoon cutscenes. The cutscenes themselves seem to be well made and directed, but the actual lip movement is so completely different from what the characters are saying, it detracts from the experience
b) The 3D effect. it's actually pretty neat, and it seems to appreciably make the game look better. The problem is that it is impossible to maintain at the maximum intensity. You'd need to bring it down to roughly 40% (which is what I did) for the optimal 3D experience.
c) Loading times. The game can often take 5-7 seconds to load new areas (I am playing from the cartridge, just for reference). While that probably does not sound like a lot, considering that this is a handheld game, loading screens and times of any sort should be largely inexcusable.

the combat is a mess because of the ridiculous amount of freedom and flexibility given to you in regards to making the majority of attacks safe. It's turns the game into a mostly mindless button masher since you are never at any sort of disadvantage.

Complaints are about gameplay not visuals. well, aside from the framerate. I wanted to the game to be good since I was interested by the story this time around and I liked the visuals. I've actually been in favor of LoS since the beginning since I got sick of the castletroids long ago. MS just hasn't been able to get the gameplay and framerates to acceptable levels for me.

The cutscenes are using a motion comic book style. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Sounds like nitpicking.

Are you talking about Blocking, and then Countering? Because that seems to be slightly overpowered right now. However, while the combat with the grunts seems to be largely easy (it actually reminds me of God of War on Easy), with the higher leveled enemies, it seems to get sufficiently challenging.

The lips move every time there is voiced dialog, and they are never in sync. It just bothers me lol, but that might just be my OCD.

With all the bitching, you'd think the framerate was Shadow of the Colossus bad. But it really isn't. It's not great, but it's perfectly playable.

Pretty much. I think it runs at sub 30FPS, but it runs at that consistently, there aren't any drops. Now while I find the rather exaggerated consequent motions of
Simon and Trevor
rather comical as a result, it doesn't really interfere with the gameplay at all.

not really. All the attacks aside from the L + Y or X ones can be cancelled into a block, parry, roll, or jump at any time in the animation. This allows you to completely blitz enemies and then just roll, jump, etc out of harm once they telegraph their attack. There just isn't any thought involved aside from being able to recognize which attack is coming.

Ah, alright.
Well, like I said, the combat does seem to be ridiculously easy with the grunts, but it seems to get rather challenging with the higher leveled enemies. Whether it degenerates into mindless button mashing again as my weapons and skills level up I don't know yet, but we'll see. For now, I'm willing to give the game the benefit of the doubt.

The bolded isn't true. If you press the jump button while doing an attack, you'll do a launcher.

And your complaint is just generally nitpicky as fuck. Being able to cancel into dodges at any time is just another way the game's copying God of War, because it worked well in God of War. You're not a fan of that design? Okay, sure, fine. But this is like the fifth time I've seen you bring this up, along with a statement of how the game is TERRIBLE and HORRIBLE because they designed the combat differently from the way you prefer.

I personally quite like how you can cancel most attacks into a block, roll, or air dodge.

Me too, because even in the demo it's not all button mashing. The combat actually flows wonderfully. And canceling attacks is handled beautifully.

Yeah, I actually like how fluid the combat is. I have also found myself relying on combos as well, which might be one of the reasons why I am finding it so easy right now.
In the end, even if the game does turn out to be too easy because the combat was mashy, I'd still be okay if it continued being as fun as it is right now.

One person equated this game to a combo of Magic Sword and Super Metroid.

I hope that rings true.

There is some exploration, but the areas are a lot more linear than in any Metroidvania. However, you run across points which you know you can't access yet (and the game encourages you to make a note of these points on the map), so I know the map is more expansive than it looks right now. Moreover, there seems to be some depth to the combat leveling/unlocks system as well. However, I'm not sure if I would call it a combo of those two games just yet :p

We'll see. I, for one, am happy with this.

You could probably flip through Historia and get more FPS from the sounds of it. Don't do it. LOL.

I mean I want a 3DS for a bunch of reasons, not just for Castlevania, and I have a regular HH that I've opened to keep and read. It's just that with Castlevania, my desire for a 3DS has went from push to shove.

Some of the later enemies require a bit of dexterity to beat...I don't mean the bosses. There's this one monster with black wings and a purple sword that takes quite an effort if you want to stick with the whip to beat him.

This will never be the same as Metroid. It jsut doesn't have the same feel and Metroid Prime blows anything Castlevania has ever done out of the water.

do you even know what they're talking about? nobody is actually comparing specific Castlevanias against specific Metroids and even if they were your claim would still be highly debatable. I don't think I'd put Prime over Super Castlevania IV or Symphony of the Night.

Got vampires on the brain waiting for this. Watching Coppola's Dracula and then I'm gonna watch Nosferatu for the first time later on tonight.

Wow read the quote in my post before you talk because you clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

Yes please anyone?

it's probably cheap and shitty going by the pictures I have seen of it (stock photos) as well as past Gamestop 3DS cases like Revelaitons.

I was more or less commenting on you saying that nothing Castlevania has ever did compares to Prime. :p

At any rate I wasn't meaning to be hostile at all; I never intended as much, so my apologies.

I didn't even realize this game was coming out until Newegg sent me an email this morning saying my copy shipped. :x Hope it doesn't suck.
