Also, how have they let the fans down if none of them have played it yet?

I shouldn't have laughed but I did at this part in Poly's review

The brutal, bone-shattering assault on a realistic female avatar was horrific regardless of its context, the imagery too loaded for me to shrug it off as just another God of War Moment TM. And then the assault was robbed of any narrative impact whatsoever by a throwaway story device. It didn't matter. I had to watch it happen and then it didn't mean anything. And then approximately 45 seconds later, I unlocked a trophy called "Bros before Hos."

If I wasn't reviewing the game, this would have been where I stopped. I didn't stop, but regardless, this is where God of War: Ascension's campaign lost me.

Well, reviews are lower than I expected, but I don't mind. Dug the demo a lot, so still keeping my preorder! Not burned out at all by Kratos, since I've only played GoW3 recently.

I do wonder if they'll change to something like Norse or Hindu gods if they ever make a God of War 4. Definitely sounds like they've exhausted most of the Greek myths.

I cancelled my preorder so I'm kinda relieved seeing those scores... It will also be the kick in the nuts the franchise needs. Just drop the greek mithology and kratos all together sony.

Well considering how reviewers use scores these days and how one sided they are to the 7-10 range, 7 might as well be the new 5 at this point. They should have never moved away from scores or stars out of five, we shouldn't need to hear if something is 8.165 out of 10, a five star range gives a pretty clear cut score on shitty to fantastic, and there's less room for scores to end up like they are now.

I imagine they will, probably one last hurrah before next-gen and they do something new, I would rather they didn't waste a new story arc on current gen, lol

Edge's review really praises the multiplayer portion of the game, and even wanted it to continue in future God of War games. and says that the single player is not that good.

I am interested where the series could go from here? will they end it? or will they come up with new ideas somehow.

The single player isn't an afterthought, the multiplayer is just a real shock, in that it's a lot of fun. I especially appreciated how much effort has gone into making it accessible for all players.

It's a good game. 7s to 8s, that's not a bad game at all :)

This one has new director, the problem with ascension is it's telling story no one is asking, people want continuation of gow 3 teaser ending, either a reboot with new character or mytn, or see where kratos go from how3 ending, but we didnt get that at all.

Game reviewers proving there integrity after Sim City I see.

But I said it before, PS4 God of War should be a new hero who is out to kill Kratos.

Kratos is done. Its time to move on by brutally murdering him at the end of the next game.


I wonder how Gears Judgement will review. Another game in a similar "why does this exist?" spot.

This looks like it will be the lowest rated GOW. But remember, before this, Ghost of Sparta was the lowest rated GOW and many, including me, consider that game to be one of the best in the series.

Why would they give it to Platinum/Kamiya , GOW sell more than all there action games combine .
They should reboot using SSM , then they could try out new game play ideas and not be stuck using the blades , Greek Mythology and Kratos .

No, not Hinduism because that's an actual religion. And Sony has a big presence in India. This should have been a PS4 game IMO, the franchise just needed that sort of break.

Scores are all over of the place.

I'll play it eventually but there was no need for another GOW this soon, one that isn't a reboot anyway.

They should have just made a new game or Heavenly Sword 2.

The series needs a loooong rest or a reboot, i would have prefered something different over Ascenscion already.

Excited to see how Gears of War is going to fare, it has similar problems and i also expect the score to go down, but maybe MS brings the moneyhats in.

Played the demo and watched some SP footage. What I saw and played is disappointing. Even in the interviews Todd Pappy was like " Yeah you know SP is there. It is our bread and butter but we are really trying new things with MP." Really is that how one should treat the SP portion of that game? How about trying new things in the SP instead. Why should they come out and say we are extremely ambitious and concentrate all the ambition on the MP portion. How about changing the design for SP. Why treat it as something that you will just clone from the rest of the series campaigns?

As I see it, the God of War franchise could have progressed in one of two ways. Either go bigger, or go deeper. Thankfully, God of War: Ascension does both.

I'm still looking forward to this game, but I can't help but feel they should've went with the Norse mythology angle that was proposed for the original ending to GoW III.

Well, not saying it's a bad game, I have yet to play it. I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it.

But time to go back to the drawing board, and bring or do something new to the franchise.
I'm sure these scores won't matter when we get GoWIV on PS4 :)

Scores ranging from 7-9 is not exactly what I would call 'all over place'.

Throw in a few 4's and 5's, and then we'll be talking.

For a GOW game a 7 is a bad score, even worst considering this game was made by SSM, game looks mediocre, I called it many times in the demo impressions thread an people think I was hating, I'm the biggest GOW fan, I platinum every game, even the psp ones on HD

I'm planning on getting this game, and I suspect it's of the same approximate level of quality as all the other God of War games. The problem I have, and I'm guessing many of these reviewers, is that there's really no need for more Greek GoW. GoW3 felt like an appropriate end to that saga, and this game just feels unnecessary, even if it is likely just as good as the other games. Basically, it was time to introduce a big change in the series, and instead they stuck with the tried and true, even though everybody was wanting change. It's probably not a bad game, people were just expecting and wanting something different.

What they need to do for the next game is exactly what fucking everybody was saying they needed to do for their next game after GoW3, which is move on to Norse mythology with a new protagonist and some new gameplay mechanics.

III left me cold, sounds like this one will do the same.

SSM need to hire a team who can tell a decent story. Since Jaffe and Barlog left, the series has just wandered.

You mean the same Platinum who basically produce bomba titles? Platinum is good for gameplay mechanics, and mediocre in all other aspects. Giving away a title like God of War, which is Sonys third biggest franchise, would be one of the dumbest things they could do. It will never happen. And it would be senseless to reboot or drastically change God of War at this point.

This is PS3s last year in the limelight. The next generation for Sony is starting soon. This game was cost efficient, and will earn a lot of money, whilst giving God of War fans another good game to enjoy. I imagine it will perform very well, and people who enjoy God of War, will also enjoy this. It's a win-win scenario. I suspect there will be a fair few people who will enjoy this more than God of War 3 also.

Whatever evolution "God of War" goes through, and it will change believe it or not, will happen on the PS4.
