[PS4Daily RUMOR] ps4 developers will have access to 7GB of GDDR5 heaven

No, 5GB for OS.

Are you trolling why in the hell would they use 5GB of ram for OS .
These are gaming system yeah they going to do other stuff but games should always get the bigger piece of the ram pie .
PC don't even uses half as much ram and will do more than what consoles can do .

7 of the 8GB is pretty much best case scenario so I'm liking it. Please let it be so.

As for the Wii U, considering how little ram the ps3 and 360 OSes use, they should work on lowering the max ram its OS uses to free it up for future games to use. They could probably get it down to 500 or 750mb. i don't see why they couldn't just upgrade the SDK so future games can use more of the ram, right?

Vita uses 256MB and it's fast with plenty of features like multitasking. I think 512MB would have been enough, I guess they used 1GB just to be on the safe side, to future proof the OS.

PS4 right now sounds like the return of sony. stoked.

Sounds good! I fully admit to not knowing enough about this to say confidently (like some) that it's too much or too little. Will wait for dev comments.

Isn't the OS footprint for WiiU 1GB? And isn't it also said to be "slow"? That's what a paltry, anaemic, emaciated 1GB gets you. PS4 should reserve more for speed.

Wii U has like 12GB/s bandwidth vs 176GB/s on the PS4. That is just one difference.

Plenty left with 7GB

They'll only really need a maximum 2GB for textures @1080p, 512MB (max) for sound & Music, less than 100Mb for the actual game executable, leaving more than 4GB left for HUGE levels.

Man, Arnold was like a greek god statue...

A healthy dose of anabolic steroids will do that to you. Not to take anything away from the man, what he accomplished is aw-inspiring, at that time taking steroids was just as natural as taking protein shakes today.

He is a living legend nonetheless.

Yeah, Sony claims a lot of things. But you know well that Sony was really hurt by the lack of memory this current gen. More importantly Sony knows it. You would be crazy if you think that OS/Media are not a big part of the PS4. We already know from the PS3 that Sony focuses a lot on media and OS. Future proof it with 2GB of ram for OS so they won´t the same problem this gen. 6 GB of GDDR5 is plenty for games.

I'd just prefer that they focus as much as possible on the games. RAM is what developers have asked for more than anything with next-gen consoles. So Sony's goal should be to give them as much as possible, even if that means that they can't implement some random OS feature years down the line.

I knew at least 1GB was for OS. I was expecting a bit more. However, thats impressive to have 7GB for games. All I need is the launch lineup and price before im sold.

more than that- every other Sony console (except the vita, maybe) seemed to have some kind of glaring flaw or compromise.

ps1 lacked ram and was poor at 2D, ps2 was hard to program, had only 2 controller Ports when 4 was standard and no online built in, ps3 had a slow blu ray drive, split ram, and was again hard to program....oh yeah, and $599.

if Sony gets the price right they'll have released their best system ever.

512MB was taking into account a total of 4GB ;) A bump to 8GB sort of does imply a bump in the OS reserve to 1GB, at least. Might as well.

Why though? If 512MB was deemed enough to have a decent OS at one point why do they need double just because they increased the RAM. I understand that they can spare the RAM to have the same proportions as before, but just increasing RAM doesn't mean the OS needs to be more complex.

While I'm very optimistic about the PS4, we have to consider that the critical flaw might no yet have been announced. Though I truly hope it isn't the case, the PS4 seems to be shaping up beautifully.

The allocation needs to accomodate Core Apps as well.
*** In-game Browser, DVR, Social Apps all come to mind

Insane For Sony
Indeed that is why I am saddened that Sony didn't reserve up to 4GB for OS at launch if not more (for eg: 3GB for games and 5GB for OS) because next gen is all about OS functions, cable shows and smartglass like features where entertainment can be taken on the go. Gaming is secondary is best done on a platform where there are no ram limits for either OS or games.
I can't even tell if you're joking anymore. btw, what does the durango spec upgrade rumor say?

You have no idea what the potential drawbacks of the system will be before things start changing.

poor Wii U

I don't quite get what you mean but if with 50MB you can do pretty much all the standard stuff (music, video etc) I think with the other ~450MB you can't do all the other superflous functionality like crossgame chat, streaming video and others.
Also i prefer the OS to have few but useful feature instead of having tons of stuff that no one will ever use.

So the desire for it to be 512MB goes unrequited.

Oh well, let's hope that the devs don't run into bottlenecks at launch because of it. Still, I guess it's better than 2GB being reserved.

You really think developers will have a problem with managing 7GB?!

You know, we still haven't had a look at the system OS right? Just some footage/screens for the store and user profiles. Interested to see how they go about making the system OS

I hope the OS is as zippy as the vita. That's all i care about. How it looks and where things are placed can be dealt with over time. Being slow will suck forever.

I hope they use an interface similar to the Vita that isn't based on touch input. I really like how the Vita handles the multitasking interface.

whats ring-fencing?

Games can only see 7GB, even though 1GB is active and working for OS. One unified pool [can be accessed by both GPU and CPU] is "formated" into two parts. At no point can OS memory footprint increase [which i think was possible on PS3 [not sure], when you pause a game some part of game memory was stored on HDD to make space for larger OS functions. This can cause lag.]
An "added bonus" of PS4's memory is that Sony has "already ring-fenced the system memory away from the game memory," Gilray adds, "so there's none of this business that we had with PS3 of having to share memories.

Great. 1 Gb of main memory reserved for the OS just like WiiU. And you know the wonders Nintendo managed to do with that...

Somehow MS manages to run Windows Phone faster than Android with less RAM.

The fundamental base of Android is...not great so that doesn't mean all that much. Just to use an example, for ages (still?) has huge problems regarding how it deals with audio.

I thought it was said in a Japanese interview with Cerny (posted here in GAF) that the OS would take a minimal amount of RAM when not in use and when there was some it would increase its usage? Maybe they have this in place to prevent bottlenecks.

I'm not going to say that you should prepare yourself for dissapointment but...well...
