Kamiya strikes again, this time Game Informer is his victim

For some reason this made me bust up.

神谷英樹 Hideki Kamiya@PG_kamiya

;) RT @KaiseritZ: haha, one day the "next week" thing will be true and you're gonna be like "see, I told you" XD

You have this weird way of being simultaneously self-deprecating while acting like this is just one of those things that could happen to anybody.

Most high school students would have at least done some cursory research and thought about it and the excuse of tagging it as a rumor does little to mitigate the lack of those fundamentals in the first place.

The purpose of his tweet was not to convince Game Informer to write a story without verification, it was his stock response to getting asked about dates. The extent to which you were "trolled" by it seems to say more about your reporting skills.

do you have to be that hard on the guy?

maybe this was a planned clickfest

But SHOULDN'T he lose his job? This is like complete incompetence and it makes GI look horrible. It's not even a remotely excusable fuckup...

Haha damn, some of you need to lighten up. I think GI readers will get a chuckle out of the trolling success of Kamiya.

You don't need to feel sorry for me. LOL

I didn't misreport someone getting fired or a studio closing. I got punked by a master troll. That's pretty damn funny, even to me.

We tagged this as rumor and in the original story expressed that this wasn't really likely. I hadn't seen his "next week" thing before. Now I have. ;)

No, you just reported a meme as fact. Nothing trollish in his tweet as he wrote it exactly as he always does.

You just didn't do your background checks and rushed to publish.

This article is exactly why people say "lol gaming journalism"

FUCK NO HE SHOULDN'T.

Holy shit, I can't even believe someone would have this guy looking for new work because he got trolled by Kamiya. He should be more careful, use this as a learning experience.

It's really not a big deal, at all.

Shouldn't lose his job but that is quite the goof. A surprise release like that announced through a random Kamiya tweet is so unlikely that you'd expect it to set off alarm bells in your head.

you should be hiding until this blows over, not posting on GAF of all places

Game journos are competing to who can release the most shoddy and baseless piece of garbage ever. I gotta say the entries are strong.

GAF can't have it both ways. Suddenly a "planned clickfest" would be a valid excuse? If Kotaku did this the thread would be 20 pages of complete vitriol and hate but somehow we're giving this guy a pass? nope.
Which member is GAF? Or do you mean to say the entire forum has a collective opinion on what should happen to an employee who makes a mistake publicly and then apologizes?

This is Kamiya though you should get a free pass when dealing with that guy :)

I dunno, I kinda feel like people would chalk it up to Kotaku being Kotaku in that case.

Some people have ridiculous standards for gaming journalism. Its like they dont realise this is reporting on a hobby or that in other journalism much bigger and actual damaging mistakes get made. If you want you can get the most crazy and harmful stories in national newspapers. The only valid complaint about "lol gamejournalism" imo is when gaming websites side with publishers because of conflicts of interest.

I don't think he should get fired, but I
absolutely think that people should be taking this more seriously then "LOL its OK he just got trolled by Kamiya." We have journalists that

A) Think its acceptable to use Twitter as a source for news.

B) Are in such a rush to get a story up they don't even bother to fact check.

This is exactly the type of shit people need to hold people accountable for. It shouldn't be treated like a joke.

If this were real news I'd agree with you... but this is hobby news. Gaming is on par with any other entertainment news... It's like if Entertainment Weekly printed the wrong date for a movie release. You know what you do? You correct the mistake, and apologise for it. Both of which have been done. THAT is taking responsibility for it. Should they be more careful in the future? Obviously... but my god, some people are turning this into a witch hunt.

I'm certainly the type for second chances. Clearly it reflects very poorly on the man, but he just started. Sure it's a terrible first impression, but I'm not writing the guy off for this.

This is hilarious. They might as well release it next week though. I've read more about the game in the past few days than anytime since E3.

yeah this thread got all 'Serious Business' on us instead of just laughing and feeling bad for the new guy that Kamiya roasted

seriously guys what was the big deal here?

Is there not an approval process? I certainly wouldn't blame only him unless GI let's their staff post whatever, whenever.

I love GAF, and hey, if anything, my moment of embarrassment gave birth to Koyima-san. There are worse things to be responsible for.

Thanks for taking it well. You know we're gonna make fun of you anyway, so... :p

Hopefully you learned your lesson.

Damn, some of you guys are just thirsting for blood and tears. Can't have any fun in the hobby devoted to...fun?

This hardly the most egregious offense in gaming journalism.

It's not like every single person involved with games is following every single game developer and knows the ins and outs of their twitter personalities. Holy crap some of you guys are harsh.

You see, you make fair points, but then you make a statement like the bolded that makes me think Michael Futter is reporting on some kind of life-or-death news that has now adversely effected thousands of lives.
He hasn't.

This was a gaffe that was quickly corrected and the writer apologized for. No one was damaged over it, other than the originator of the story who got a little egg on his face.
He's had a brief moment of embarrassment and has likely learned an important lesson from it. If I didn't visit GAF so often, I wouldn't know Kamiya trolls constantly. I would know Kamiya is a famous game designer that addressed a release question directly on his Twitter. Should Mr. Futter have done a little more research on Kamiya's posting habits? Sure... but come on. Thinking he should be fired, is an example of 'lol game journalism', and/or have his integrity reduced to a pile of shit over something like this is, IMO, comically over-exaggerated.

Did a game journalist apologize in this thread? I I didn't know they could do that
How does Kamiya find time to work between his tweeting? He's usually devouring my timelines.
He doesn't. why do you think Nintendo doesn't have a release date?

Neither am I, he doesn't deserve anything but a little shit for a stupid mistake. But it is a symptom of bigger issues within video game journalism.

I'm not saying this guy personally should be berated past what's happened, but this is the mindset of the entire games journalism industry. The fact that reading something on twitter and using it as the basis for a story was even a viable option in their line of work is embarrassing. I'm at the point that I don't trust anything these sites say. I'm not asking that every article on a video game site be a hard hitting expose, but I'd at least like them to get the facts right.

Also there is a vast difference between misprinting a release date and using a tweet as the entire basis for an article.

I specifically said I hope the guy doesn't get fired. I wouldn't wish anything like that on someone who made a stupid mistake. But people should absolutely be held accountable when the entire industry sees this as a legitimate practice. The industry as a whole should be held accountable for the shitty job they do. It shouldn't even be in a journalists head to base an article off something someone said on Twitter.

We can't complain about how bad the journalism is in this industry and then treat this like its just a joke. We should be using this as a jumping off point for a discussion about why the standards have fallen so low.

I'd just like to be able to go on a video game website and not wonder if the writer knows what he's talking about.

You should be wondering that whenever you read anything on the web, establishment media or not.
