No seriously, they were ok. Better than both alternatives on competing platforms (Mii are cute but too simple, and Home avatars are... *shudder* )

Was this changed or something? I could swear when I created my xbox account I couldn't find a way to do it without having to create an avatar. Unless I missed something, which is entirely possible.

I do like the idea of them. Deeper personalization is always a good thing. But the devious grins and soulless eyes are a bit much for me. Maybe Microsauce has something better planned (if they're really axing avatars).

You can just hit next and have a generic one and never bother with it again.

So... It'll be full on mature shooter machine without any hint of stylized characters to dress up? Some of that shit was pretty damn cute, like the Halo Crawler as an avatar pet.

I'll be waiting for my next-gen Viva Pinata to make up for this!

I bought a t-shirt for my avatar for 80 MS points. I am pleased the avatars are gone in equal measure to how little I care about losing the 80 MS points.

I was well aware I was tossing $1 (or whatever 80 MS points are) down the toilet at the moment of purchase.

I kinda wish that there was some sort of avatar system in place, but I can't say that I'm all that disappointed to see the existing ones gone. I wonder why avatars are going away, though. They're in Windows Phone 8.

I think I can actually agree with this. Granted, I like Miis too. But I remember when Avatars were first revealed and everyone thought they were ripping off Miis. And I thought the same thing. But honestly I feel like Microsoft improved on the formula. The first NXE dashboard was great, and just the fact that Avatars represented you online gave them more personality than Miis. Granted, Miis do that now. But I feel like Avatars were more expressive in terms of personality. Also, my Avatar looks a lot more like me than any of my Miis do.

The route Microsoft seems to be going with the Xbox One is interesting. They haven't shown us any Kinect games. That combined with the lack of Avatars makes me feel like they're trying to respond to the criticism that the 360 was too casual/children-focused late in its lifespan. Instead they're trying to appeal to the masses through multimedia and popular FPS games.
