Not at all, not even related.

Fun fact: There isn't a hard g in formal Arabic. People would write Google/gamers using either Qāf (voiceless uvular stop) or Gīm (J/soft G) depending on dialect.

Yeah lol I took two semesters in college but the prof was a love able pushover so you only really learned as much as you wanted to. And I took it as a filler course.

But I still did learn a lot. Hoping I'll follow up on it some day, really cool language, not as hard to understand for a Roman alphabet user as some might think

Actually, some people theorize that hard G is in fact formal arabic depending on the word. That's where the dialects come from.

Other than that yes you are correct.

As far as reading it, maybe, but it's completely different than any of the latin/germanic languages.

Name one other word in the english language in which the syllable *gif* is pronounced with a soft g

Well, there are examples of soft g. Gigawatt, for example, the soft g was the original correct pronunciation. You have words like giant and gigantic, which the root for gigawatt (giga) comes from. The you got gym, gem, gist, giraffe, ginger, gyro, gypsy, geo-, gentle, generate, general, germ.

That said, hard g sounds better with .gif imo.

Gibbon, Gibson, Giddy, Gift, Giga (unless you're Doc Brown), Gilbert, Gimp, Girl, Give, Gizmo, etc...

Gift is the important one because it's just a t sound away from GIF.

The only thing that annoyed me was the low quality cams everyone seems to have. DAMN

Oh and Blamespace actually seems like a cool guy IRL, who'd have thought?

I like the people posting giraffe's too prove their point on the g and j argument lol.

Anyways I always pronounced gif as jif and am corrected by friends all the time. I pronounce neogaf as gaf though. I'm weird and kinda go both ways with the whole g and j thing. Personally I just see it as a way of talking and it doesn't matter how you say it. It's just the way people speak and I can't change that.

Neogaf not Neojaf btw :p

But giga (soft g) was correct and people changed it to a hard g. Isn't that a similar case to gif?

GIF with a hard G always sounds like you're lazily trying to say "Gift".

"Did you open that gif'"?
"Dot gif." problem solved?

More food for thought. All patents related to GIF worldwide have expired, and here's the trademark:

Does that mean using a soft G in giga is incorrect now?
Technically, no, but you do sound funny.

Oh yeah, not saying its easy, just that it isn't as different as say Mandarin or Russian.

Why exactly do you say it's completely different? I felt like the basic syntax still made sense to me as an English speaker

Edit:

I like how this video created an entire discussion about how you pronounce GIF.

Stay classy, NeoGAF.

This is a discussion (war) that is long overdue.

I do feel bad the thread seems to have been derailed, although it also seems to have moderators' tacit approval :p

There is nothing wrong with "JIF." Grammar is just weird like that.

In English we have words that mean different things and are pronounced differently ("Please excuse me while I think of an excuse."), words that get pronounced completely different due to one or two letters (through, rough), and many other acronyms that are technically pronounced incorrect according to you guys.

If you say JIF instead of GIF, you also have to say NeoJAF instead of NeoGAF. It is that easy.

No it's not. The people who made NeoGAF intended for it to be pronounced with a hard g. The person who made .gif intended for it to be pronounced with a soft g.

Are you gonna pronounce Google like Joogle now because you just want to? lol. I know google was actually a word before the site existed but they still intended for the site to be pronounced with a hard g when they made it.

This video was pretty great. Not nearly as cringe-worthy as I was expecting.

Actually, nothing was intended at all! The closeness with "Gaffer" kind of took care of things.

Just like the closeness with "Gift".

Yeah exactly, because of "Gaffer", because of "Gaming Age Forums".

Also, the GT comments section is full of pathetic comments. Lol.

A Pretty Panda

fuckin' called it, man
besides who gives a crap about a stupid pun based on a peanut butter ad from literally twenty years ago, from a brand that doesn't even have a "g" in it?

Because it sounds like it?

The whole point is that people pronounce it their own way and when they hear the other pronunciation aloud it's weird to them. If I pronounce it with a hard G and hear someone say it with a soft G it sounds like the fucking peanut butter to me.

According to the rules of English the letter G followed by an i, e, or y is pronounced "J". While there are many exceptions the secondary rule is that words of Latin/Greek origin usually follow the rule while those of Germanic origin do not. "Gif" is an acronym composed of three Latin/Greek words. It is too is arguably of Latin/Greek origin.

Since the word "gif" is spelled "gi", and since it is or Latin/Greek origin it is most appropriately pronounced "jif".

People keep saying it sounds like "gift", but gift is of Germanic origin not Latin.

The only argument that makes sense at to why is should be pronounced with a hard G is simply because "that's how it's pronounced". That's certainly a compelling argument. But any attempt to use the rules of English pronunciation or comparing it with other words are simply wrong. According to the rules of English pronunciation it undoubtedly should be pronounced with a soft G. It's an exception (which is perfectly valid) that it is not.

This is where your logic falls apart. The acronym is of American origin, and, more importantly, its use as a one-syllable word began in America as well.

Also, "change" isn't from latin or greek. It just has the prefix because English speakers use latin/greek to sound smart.

Oh yeah?! well my counter arjument is that it isn't a word it's an acronym and you should be able to pronounce it how ever you want.

Jet out of here with this nonsense.

I feel like the people who say "Jiff" just recently found out that they were pronouncing it wrong and were embarrassed so they are trying to cover it up.

It's a hard G.

I certainly don't know of anyone who pronounced it correctly before and is now switching to saying jif because the creator said so.

Why are you agreeing with me?

The people who invented something had an intended pronunciation for the word and that is the correct way to say it.

In NeoGAF's case, it's pronounced with a hard g. They intended it to be that way because of "Gaming Age Forums" and "Gafers".

In .gif's case, it's pronounced with a soft g, because the creator intended it to be that way, regardless of any other reason.

The creator's intentional pronunciation is always the trump.

"Jif" is the correct way, even though I prefer "gif".

If you name your daughter Janette and you say the last "e" is silent and people insist that the last "e" is pronounced, it doesn't matter what other people think, you named her, you get to say how it's pronounced.
