Rumor: Microsoft removing Kinect requirement for Xbox One

I would be really dumb for MS to remove the Kinect IMO.

They aren't removing the Kinect.
The rumor states that they are removing that Kinect is required to be plugged in.

This actually sounds like a great idea.
Developers can still count on everyone having a Kinect.
Conspiracists can unplug the PRISM camera.
Minority Report wannabes can still say "Xbox On" and dance to move the dashboard.

Next Week MS announces that they'll have 18CU and 8GB of GDDR5 RAM
The following week they'll announce that they are releasing Last Guardian.

Countless millions spent on research and development...talking about the deep Kinect connectivity...Clearly their vision for the future is falling apart around them...Blind panic.

Awesome if true, since this is the one major thing that is keeping me from getting an Xbox One.

However, I need to see some follow through. If every game is going to require it at some point then the policy flip of "not having to use Kinect for the Xbox to function" is useless if I need to plug it in for games anyway.

Even if this is true, it's still a wait and see.

I'm really hoping MS releases a $399 Xbox One without Kinect. Not just because that's the SKU I'd prefer, but because then we'd have a real good fight between XB1 and PS4. Bring on the competition.

It's hard to take Microsoft seriously anymore. The amount of boneheaded decisions this company has made, and now the amount of backpedaling they are doing just screams incompetence to me. I really hope that when all is said and done they put out a product that competes with the PS4, because competition is good. With that said, there is nothing Microsoft can do at this point to get me on board with the Xbone. It's not about what features it has, or has not. It's not about the price tag. It's about me, as a consumer, not feeling like I can trust this company to make smart decisions and follow through with them.

I kinda feel bad for folks within the Microsoft Xbox team. The time leading up to a console launch must be hectic and difficult as hell, and to get through it, you need to believe in the vision behind the project. The One clearly has no vision, or at least nothing that can't be discarded at whim. It must be incredibly deflating to be working there right now.

From my perspective as a consumer, though, this is all good news. Unbundle the Kinect or bring in some sort of discount, and we're golden.

I'll be amazed if they go through with this.

You know what would have really been amazing? After all this they would have still released the 500 bucks costing DRM including used games denying abomination what it was set to be. They realized their mistakes early. Their handling of situation was hardly optimal but I think they played their cards as well as they could have after the E3.

it was "more powerful" last gen too and people still chose 360.

With a more complicated architecture that developers aren't familiar with and an entire year headstart given to the 360, neither is true here, the architecture is simpler, way faster RAM AND the PS4 might launch earlier and with more units available.

Half the people chose 360. The other half chose PS3. And that was $600 vs $400 and a year head start. Now it's "more powerful" and $100 cheaper. I don't think the two launches can be compared so easily.

edit- damn this thread is moving FAST

Not the same. PS3 was perhaps overall more powerful, but the 360 had the better GPU, and was much easier to develop for, hence had the better versions of most multiplatform games. Add to that, the 360 was a fair bit cheaper starting off too. Since multiplatform games were the biggest selling this generation, you can see why many may have gravitated towards the 360.

Things are different now. The PS4 is $100 cheaper, 50%+ more powerful and easier to develop for, and according to a few multiplatform devs, actually has easier and more mature dev tools presently as well. The fact that the consoles have such similar architecture is also a cause for concern for Microsoft. The stakes are very, very different this time.

Microsoft are slowly improving. Now they need to drop the price to stay competitive with Sony.

I won't buy one but tight competition is healthy for the industry to prosper.

I, however, think I'm sitting out til late in next-gen for the Xbox One. Not sure how late but I'm definitely waiting a price drop or two, maybe til the end of the gen when I'm sure nothing will be re-implemented.

I'll be waiting too of course, but my reasoning would be to gauge multiplatform game performance. A major reason why I chose the 360 back in January 2009 was because Bayonetta ran better on it.

Folding@Microsoft :)

"Winning" next gen will mean that that your console has 10.000 more sales in NPD. Every month will be a new race to the "win". Can't wait for the threads and gifs.

Embrace another HD twins future. Nintendo is sweating right now.

This time around "more powerful" has much more meaning because they both share very similar architecture. Last time it was, yeah the PS3 had more processing power, but was weaker in some areas and much harder to develop for compared to the much more developer-friendly Xbox 360. Microsoft does not have that advantage this time.

And, yeah, even with all of the PS3's failures, it's still going to come out on top when viewed worldwide. I doubt there will even be a huge cap in the US when all is said and done.

I think they may be removing the always on for Kinect
Would be a smart move but they need to realllly market this because I think a lot of people relate the device to "spying" already.

The main purpose of Kinect was likely to ID check that the person associated with the XBO account was the same as the person associated with the purchase of content in a SaaS ecosystem. It seems pointless in that regard with the dropping of installed and online-checked software. I think this would've been the upcoming "gets worse".

Everyone is cheering and stuff over what MS done and now is rumored to do. I feel like these moves are mistakes. It's like people have closed minds and don't wan to even consider new ideas/ gameplay options.

Excellent news. Definitely puts a question on my PS4 pre-order. Sony and MS are now competing for my money.

Its funny how this instills confidence in game console buyers...a company shreds their business model and alters their software in the run up to launch and it makes people feel better about a company??

I can't believe MS has removed everything that makes the XB1 unique. Not saying it was stuff I wanted, but believe it or not there were people who wanted the system based on what it had a few weeks ago. This is amazing.

Why would you remove that feature if you didn't intend to sell a kinect-less SKU?

Man at least before I had some respect for MS for sticking with all their bs requirements, but all these changes in policies just shows how weak they really are. People can keep defending them for being "smart enough to reverse their policies", but if they were really smart enough they would have either kept the policies or never done them in the first place. MS are a complete mess at the moment.

This is hilariously insane!!

Now, Microsoft is removing one features at a time and i've wondered if they'll keep the name "Xbox One" since it's all in one machine which is not anymore?

they removed a feature ? where ?
all im seeing is a removed requirement for a camera, everybody thought spied on them.
i dont get why people spin this into negativity

I doubt this would be leaked by someone using gmail as their work(?) email and released by a random PR rep. Who knows, I'll believe when someone reputable responds.

If this is true, anyone who buys an XBone at launch who doesn't want a Kinect is a sucker. This seems to pave the way for Microsoft to announce a new sku after sales taper off next Spring or so. When that happens, I'll consider getting one.

Just gonna come out and say the unpopular thing, but if they do release a Kinect-less SKU, that's the new 'tard pack. The new Kinect looks awesome.

This has been the worst reveal in the history of electronic devices, ive never seen a company fuck up the messaging then fumble over themselves to justify it then back pedal so much before it even hits store shelves, bravo ms.

Awesome post, loved the bolded. That's me right there hahaha. I don't even care about motion controls in games... but I want the Kinect only for OS navigation (voice and hand gestures).

MS should do whatever it takes to stay competitive. It's important for this industry that as many players as possible (Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo) are strong and healthy.
