It took Nintendo two years to sort out the 3DS, now it's the best selling console in the world. I wouldn't be too worried about the console.

You are forgetting that the nature of handhelds and home consoles gave/give the 3DS some advantages over the WiiU when it comes to Nintendo fixing poor launch periods.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Now that we have NPD sales for WiiU-
Let's compare with two other consoles that were in a similar predicament:
Gamecube & Dreamcast
Dotted lines = cumulative LTDs

Seems appropriate.

Wow so essentially... below Dreamcast sales (by a hair). Thats... thats quite the accomplishment Iwata!

wait there are people in this thread that are actually trying to downplay the DKC series as some sort of poor quality property?

are these people idiots? the DKC series is one of the most well received, highest selling, enjoyable 2d platformers ever made.

wtf?
seriously, what is wrong with DKC:TF? can someone answer this seriously, because from the videos i've seen, it looks to be a tremendous game to look forward to if you enjoyed & played games before the dudebro invasion.

considering the pedigree behind it, it'll probably go down as one of the best platformers released this generation, too.

fucking console warz.

I love my 3DS, but what? No it isn't, and it's still underperforming compared to the original DS.

Its close to be the best selling console in NA monthly, and will no doubt be the best selling in the world eventually. That's despite the system looking like its a complete disaster two years ago.

The DS was a phenomenon as was the Wii. When's all said and done the Wii U will still have a sold a great amount WW.

Edit. Expecting the 3DS to beat he DS is unrealistic, same with the Wii U and Wii comparison.

Sure, some people will get the WiiU for DK or something.
But Nintendo's pathetic strategy for the console right now really only aims at one niche, which are people who are willing to pay 350+ for a bunch of offline-only multiplayer platformers (and minigame collections) that look almost identical to the games you could also get on the original Wii and/or 3DS... and we'll see how big that audience is. I suspect, not very big.

A safe, unambitious sequel to a 2D platformer from Retro Studios.

Lets imagine for a moment it is the absolute greatest 2D platformer of all time. It won't shift consoles much like the 2D Mario game at launch didn't shift consoles. It will not spark the imagination like an adventurous 3D title would, which looking at any WUST thread, you would see was clamored for.

They have the exclusives and the games to sell any of ther consoles. When they get thier act together, the console will start flying off the shelf.

2-D platformers aren't popular anymore. They don't even put them in the genre breakdowns. :-(

It looks like yet another safe sequel which does not look technically ambitous nor does it provide a new concept. People are wondering why a new console was needed when Nintendo's internal studios are mostly making Wii HD games instead of something new or something with a larger scope (X would be an example of that). No online multiplayer, no graphics that look vastly superior to those of PS3/360, no real use for the gamepad. Could've also sticked to the Wii if it wasn't for the MK8 horn.

I don't play generational leaps, I play games.

Outside of messageboards, I doubt people buy systems based on such terminology.

Explains Dreamcast numbers for this console, even though it has 2D Mario, Assassines Creed, Call of Duty and more... It's because you can get similar, or even the exact same, games on cheaper hardware.
Same goes for Donkey Kong. It looks like the Wii game, there's no reason why you should get the overpriced WiiU for it, especially now that there's also the 3DS port for the first game. If anything, it's the messageboard users who'd see the ,,value'' of DKCTF, not the ,,outsiders'' of the mainstream

Nintendo, for next retro project, I have to warn you that the ones asking for metroid are not real!!! New game as it should be.
Metroid to the original team and zero mission level design realized in 3d.

I'M FINISHED!

Um exCUSE me Sakurai but CLEARLY the best choice for Smash Bros would be my fav niche character HOWEVER you are clearly INCOMPETENT and
Identical.

Returns = DeVito

Tropical Freeze = Schwarzenegger

What's your evidence for this?

  • It's selling worse than the Dreamcast
  • Third parties aren't interested
  • Nintendo themselves don't know what to do with it
  • PS4/Xbox One due to come out later this year

Publishers of thirdparty games aren't really selling their games to me.

EA sabotaging whatever sales the Mass Effect 3 Special Edition for Wii U could have gotten by releasing Mass Effect Trilogy on PC/PS3/360, REALLY you actually though that was a good idea? It was S-T-U-P-I-D unless you wanted super low sales you currently have gotten.
Now because of EA's withdrawl from the Wii U platform, I'm thinking should I even bother getting the games ME3:SE and N4S: Most Wanted U knowing that I will not get any more games in those series?

Ubisoft commenting that their support on Wii U will be most likely scaled back, they REALLY think that will make me want to buy their games MORE, shit I'm thinking should I really bother spending my money on their games knowing that it might be the last games in their series on Wii U, I have other games to place my money on then.

You do realise my post was in reference to what StunandStab was saying. He claimed 10 years ago was the last time Nintendo was releasing games for "the fans". By bringing up five years ago you actually agree with me that what he is saying is codswallop.

Who complained about that when we got Mario Galaxy 2???

Well, it was a bit of a different context, don't you agree? SMG2 did not release on a new console which is still lacking a major showcase title more than half a year after its launch. And yes, I would've been also disappointed had they announced SMG3 as it also would have been another lazy effort (which does not mean it would have been a bad game, I'm absolutely certain that Super Mario 3D World is one of the best games this year, if not the best).

Well I think most of us understand that the new DK game will be very fun and good, but it still suffers from the same disease like most WiiU games.

It has a sense of "been there done that", similar art style as the Wii game, and looks like it could be easily done on the Wii.

To me it fails to generate the excitement of a next-gen Nintendo offering with interesting gamepad implementation, just feels like an HD Wii game.

Many people with me included, expected something more interesting from Retro, something with a more western-like approach, and maybe targeted at mature audiences, Metroid would be a great showcase both for the system's graphics capabilities but also as a way to create unique experiences with the gamepad.

I remember in the speculation threads how many interesting concepts of gameplay with the gamepad had come up by GAF members. At this point it seems like Nintendo has no idea how to showcase why the gamepad is an innovative design choice, and only does the least amount of effort to make games that take advantage both of the hardware and the controller.

Same hardware as Galaxy 1. Really that hard to grasp? This is an expensive, all new HD console and all we get is leftovers from the fucking 3DS and Wii.

What's really hard to grasp is the logic that a critically acclaimed high selling game doesn't deserve even one sequel by the developer that made it.

A spiritual sequel in terms of look and mechanics to a 16 bit title no less. I mean, that's nice and all, but to stubbornly refuse to see how this could be seen as disappointing to some...well that's just obtuse.

Its a very stupid title to debut on a console with from such a prestigious dev house.

Oh I see, I agree with you on that. I found the GameCube lineup horrible and was happy that Nintendo made the DS and Wii. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat was one of the very few GCN games I really liked though and it's the only console game I bought twice. That's why I wish that EAD Tokyo could do something different once again instead of safe sequels.

450k units on the top selling 3rd party game.

I fucking wonder why Nintendo.

How can a company be so stupid?

Considering the attach-rate of said game to console, that really isn't bad at all. They just need to sell more consoles to get people to buy more games. But how do?

I can tell that Donkey Kong is using shampoo and conditioner in Tropical Freeze. His fur looks luxurious.

This whole '3D World is a 3DS game!' Is stupid, really annoying and just plain wrong...

It looks like a 3DS game. The playfield is constrained like I would expect form a handheld, as opposed to having sweeping vistas like the Galaxy games which work better on consoles. It shares design choices one would make when creating a handheld game.

They should have made a Killzone:[

Or a Skyrim

Or a "The Last of Us"

Or a Mass Effect

These types of games require huge budgets and massive amounts of man power though, as they are not confined to a simple 2D plane where jumping is the primary action needed. They are far more ambitious in scope and production values.

Sure, it deserves it. It's just not going to sell consoles in the way Nintendo needs it to. Even people who liked the previous game aren't going to drop the money on a new console for a slightly improved version of a game they already have.

No one knows what would sell the console though.
