It makes sense. Last generation they were unable to add stuff like Cross Game Chat within the OS, or make sweeping changes to the OS, because the mopped themselves into a corner with a low reservation of ram. Considering these generations are potentially lasting 8-10 years, it's important to ensure that you have the potential to adapt alongside the industry.

but last gen they had more RAM reserved than MS and with less features and added more features while reducing memory footprint.
this gen they already were planning for 1GB footprint out of 4GB... so... double it when adding double RAM or triple/quadruple it? c'mon son.
5GB versus 5.5GB, although Sony's ram is obviously faster.
Having said that, if this turns out to be true, it's incredibly disingenuous on Sony's part considering they've been pushing the upgrade to 8GB as a positive for gaming on their platform.
I dunno, Nintendo started it first by reserving 50% of the Wii U's RAM.
I want to know what the heck they're doing with that 1GB

XB1 has 5GB available for games and 3GB reserved for OS, so going from 3/1 to a 4.5/3.5 slash 5.5/2.5 system just sounds bizarre.
but its Nintendo... and half is still only 1GB

I don't think so. If they didn't go with 8 gigs then it's not hard to believe even less would be given to devs than 5.5 gigs.
Wouldn't the game recording feature require quite a bit of RAM in the first place? Let's say you're recording 15 mins in HD, isn't that a lot?
I'm not saying it's true, but the constantly running OS in the background does need RAM for that feature to work.

it's not really that simple... the way voice comms was handled at the base level in PS3 vs in 360 was a huge factor in why there was no PS3 cross game chat
why save that in RAM instead of writing to HDD? i mean, at a decent bitrate, that would use up over a gig of RAM yeah, but why even do it that way!?
Honestly don't see why people think it'll change much. You build a game, then cut back to make it run. You don't go into it at the start with "Oh, we have 2 more GB to play with? Okay, we can have 50 enemies in each area!"

nah, they're just currently doing better than the other guys... everyone's out to make money, PS+ required for online is a clear indicator of that.
Dunno, but what else could the OS be doing that needs that much RAM?
