Sony Announces Q1 Results

Pokemon and MH are not releasing this christmas for the wiiu. PS4 like the wiiu is a home console, a separate market than the portable gaming market.

We basically know 5-6 of their exclusive titles for the first year of PS4 and we don't know what JP games they will have for year 1 and launch yet. Too early to jump to conclusions about a JP launch line up

Whether you (or Sony) considers it a significantly different 'market' or not, people have limited money to spend on 'games' as a whole and handhelds have sold better in Japan for years, so those games coming out for the holidays will have an effect.

As I already stated, I'm talking about how the situation stands now, because pretending that they have dozens of big Japanese announcements for launch/next year just waiting to be announced around the corner did not turn out so well for either Vita or Wii U. They may well have them, but I cannot make predictions and assumptions based on things not known to exist.

They still have new tech manufacturing, Sony are the only company in the world that makes and sells large OLED screen/monitors in significant quantities for example, and those are all made in house. They also have a 30" 4K OLED coming out in a few months for professionals which will be another industry first.

As for CLED, R&D is still on going, but as a technology it is just too expensive to bring to market, especially without the unlimited development budgets that Sony used to have. Really, it's up to the Japanese government to introduce tax credits and such for this kind of stuff before Sony (and other Japanese companies) invest money in to new and untested tech again like they used to.

Ok you heard the man! Everyone, we need a kickstarter to help Sony develop CLED tech! :)

Just as a side question here zomg. As Sony are the only ones currently using quantum dots in displays, what are the chances of one day seeing a display purely made up of them? Or are they just unsuitable for actual consumer level displays? I think I've seen a video of a QLED display in action, but it was a crappy prototype.

No they aren't. Do you know how the psp actually performed in the west? It will be lucky to sell half of what the psp sold in the west worldwide

I would bet your limited edition Kuribo's Shoe Custom AND1 sneakers that when the dust clears Vita will be a Super Smashing Success. It will sell a ton more software PSP was truly Pirate Station Portable.

Because surpass 360 is more big news than 80 million.

Nope..that's only important to us video game enthusiasts and forum goers. To a company like Sony it will be about major mile stones in sales (70m, 80, 90m etc) OR about getting first place. Second place is not a bad place to be but not press release worthy

They are different enough markets. Heck there are differences if you consider the primary franchises on PS and Nintendo too. There won't be as big of an overlap as you think

I'm not pretending either way. Unlike you I'm saying it's too early to say anything about the software line up of the PS4 in Japan when we basically know nothing of it. You are trying to see an issue without proper reasons too

I wish they were more forthcoming regarding their first party software sales. Why is it only Nintendo out of three manufacturers gives out LTD sales data for their software?

Its baffling to me too but Sony is not a games only company. They don't go into a lot more detail regarding their games software.

Although, realistically neither will probably reach 80M in Q2, while both will reach 80M in Q3.

So they'll each need to put out specific milestone press releases for any determination.

Good lord....

Back to reality, do people still believe the other last gen consoles have a shot at 100 million?

TGS is late Septmper, very unreleastic for them to announce a 2013 release dare so late in the year imo. If they didn't announce a JP release date at GC, they won't launch this year in Japan.

To lose money on something, you actually have to invest in it. You can see how much they are investing on VITA, lol

Aside from KZ: Mercenary, which has been in development since 2011 and Tearaway, which is being made by a small team at Media Molecule, they aren't really sinking big bucks on VITA and are actually making a decent profit from the sales(Digital) + Memory Cards. Even the Hardware is not selling at a loss AFAIK. Now it is another story if the sales are at peanut level and hence barely noticeable.

Yay, we're finally second is not press release material. 80M is a milestone mark. Your reasoning is silly.

I disagree. Microsoft even said that would sold more consoles this generation than Sony.

Surpass X360 number is material for press release. It's overcome the direct competitor.

20m more at this rate? i think it's doable. if sony hits their 10m for the year, they'll be 10m away. and if they keep the ps3 around until 2015, they could cross the threshold.

Direct competitor would mean something if it were earlier in the generation and a battle for 1st place. Neither of those are the case. Just like everyone else has said, surpassing 360 this late in the generation is not press release material.

Sony milestones was not related with the quarters... the last one was posted in November 4th.

Hardware sold below DS, software didn't sell at all. PSP piracy was rampant in the west.

Wrong, there is a reason psp continues to get support for games like FIFA to this day. PSP software certainly collapsed but it was healthier in its worst years than vita ever will be

Plus a milestone figure is easier to spin as a good thing.

PS3 has the best shot. The ASP is still insanely high in relative terms. When they reposition it as a budget console after PS4 gets going properly I think sales will pick up a bit with budget gamers, right now those people don't want a $279 console.

Their gaming division posted an operating loss of 149 million dollars, which is hardly a call for celebration. Try reading the thread before you gush over your favorite company.

If the man wants to celebrate, he is entitled so without you telling him what he can and can not do.

r&d creating a loss is a pretty common thing. i don't think it's much to be concerned over.

So whats the easy fix? Is Vita going to stop selling less than 20k a month in the US

The hard fix ( and the right one ) is to have system-moving games on the platform. This is very difficult because even if you put a console system-moving IP there, the sales would never reach the same volume as it does on a console, because console has the 'better experience.'

The easy fix?
1. Cut the price so hard that a PSVita is essentially a throwaway purchase that doesn't need any thought. Something like $129 DS.
2. Release an Xperia Vita. Not a piece of shit like Xperia Play, but an actual high-quality device (at the level of Xperia Z) that dual-boots Android & Vita OS.

Sony's smartphone division is doing really well. It must be Europe because i never see anyone in the states with a sony smartphone

Sony has issues with carriers in the US, it seems. They always seem to have their mobile phones delayed by MONTHS compared to the global roll-out.

Compare the amount of PSP's on the market to how much software was sold. Are you really telling me that it was a healthy market?

Fifa is still on the PSP because europe is sonyland.

You could actually start by reading the thread. People already have discussed it. It's nothing to concern over

The loss also includes PS4 R&D, which in actuality is probably the only reason for a loss. It's standard to post a loss right before the debut of a new console. And since Sony has turned profit in every other division, I think that's a huge call for celebration. We're talking about the company that was bleeding serious money not even a few years ago. This is an extremely impressive turn around.

I really disagree.

But I'm not saying release a statement celebrating the fact that surpass X360. Only put the number out in a PR or other form, and let people know PS3 is ahead.

It's been well over a year that I have seen a single PSP Game let alone hardware in a US store.

PSP games are still being released. Black Rock Shooter was just a few months ago.
Anything that comes to the west these days is all digital though (so they can be played on Vita as well).

From what I'm reading, Sony in general beat forecasts for this quarter and people are happy with the results that new management has produced.

They are on their way to recovery, but the road ahead of them is still quite long.
You can also understand why they decided to monetize their next version of the playstation network. As microsoft showed, there are literally hundreds of million of dollars of revenues (if not billions) to be made.

End of the console generation + R&D costs of the PS4, etc.
Try using your brain before flaming other members.

Well I guess you're entitled to disagree. We'll just wait and see who posts the 80million press release first, as that would give us good bearings on the situation.

PLAYSTATION®3 SALES REACH MORE THAN 78.21 MILLION UNITS WORLDWIDE
Sales of PlayStation®3 Surpass Xbox 360; Still Considerably Less Than Nintendo Wii Or PlayStation®2.

Tokyo, August 1, 2013– Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that the cumulative sales of the PlayStation®3 (PS3®) computer entertainment system reached an undisclosed number greater than the irrelevant milestone of more than the Xbox 360 – more than than six years after the platform launched in 2006. Na na nana naaa. Suck it, Microsoft.
Here you go SCEI, drafted it for you.

PR's rule of thumb : Don't quote competitors when hitting milestones.

It dilutes your achievement, puts in context how others are doing, and lastly... you give free 'mentions' to the competitor.

Like I said, they don't need to mention X360, only release the number.

Which is why everyone is saying they will wait for the 80m milestone. PR for 79.3m makes no sense.

They can't say they're first, Wii takes that.

Saying 'second' means you're admitting someone's better, and you've been 3rd place the whole time until now.

Quoting numbers? We have 79.5 million sold. Why are we announcing it before 80? Shits and giggles.

It really is time to stop obfuscating Vita sales. They're poor, everybody knows that. Chucking the PSP in there doesn't suddenly bamboozle people into thinking otherwise.
