Certain Canadian Target Stores selling Wii U Basics for $149.99

i think the wii kinda killed any thought of ever getting another nintendo console, at any price, for me...

I had no plans for buying a Wii U, it kind of just happened.

The last couple of years for the Wii was absolutely atrocious for gamers like me. I could see why you'd want to avoid any Nintendo console after that. And it wasn't as if the first few years were particularly glorious either

I think the Wii will be looked back on as Nintendo's worst console.

Of course a followup console would suffer, doubly so since the lineup of games (For Wii U) looks... resistible at best

Shame, since the 3DS is gonna at least end up as a good runner up for 'Best Handheld' during the same time.

You know, I wonder if you can price match it from canada to the US?

I might just grab that image and put it on my phone and try to pass it off as my cousin or something.

Seems skeezy but I'd like to know if it would work...

Actually never mind. I don't really want a Wii U.

Even without entering the thread I already knew there would be plenty of posts saying they wouldn't get it anyway. Pathetic.

Not really. Perhaps they're like me who plan on getting a wii u as their second console, but would much rather buy a ps4 first and have limited amount of money to spend on consoles/games per year.

If I had the money to cover this + external harddrive (as it basically requires it) + PS4 + the PS4 games I've preordered, I'd get it right away.

Still plan on getting it as my second console this gen, and I'd get the deluxe at $250 even at that point (which is why I hope it recovers and starts doing well), unless the Xbox One removes their Kinect plugged in requirement, get a price drop and the exclusives released on it somehow appeal more to me than all the Wii + Wii U games I missed out on.

Seriously, just with the exclusive games announced, it is worth it.

Ignoring "classic" Nintendo games you have:
X - I would buy this if I had a Wii U
Bayonetta 2 - Looks like a solid action game, but I've got a backlog of those on PC
W101 - Looks good, but not sure about the gameplay
Lego City - Eh, I can get the 3DS version if I really want it
SMTxFE - Not into fighters
Sonic Lost Worlds - Will get on 3DS (if it's good)
Pacman (if you are into it) - Never heard of it
ZombiU - Little to no interest

Adding in the "classic" Nintendo titles that have been announced and you also have:
WWHD - I have 4+ old Zelda games on my 3DS right now I've never played. I don't need an overpriced HD update of one I HAVE played before.
DKCR:TF - Still haven't played the first and I can get that on the 3DS
Mario3DWorld - Multiplayer has no appeal to me, need to see more
Mario Kart 8 - Can get on 3DS if I want to play another Mario Kart
Smash - Will get on 3DS
Yoshi's Yarn - New Yoshi also coming out on 3DS
Pikmin 3 - I would buy this if I had a Wii U
and a new Zelda - New Zelda also coming out on 3DS

I admit that this price is pretty attractive, but there are only 2 games out of that list I'd be willing to buy and I honestly have more than enough games to play at the moment. I'm getting more than enough Nintendo goodness out of my 3DS for the foreseeable future.

A new 3D Zelda would be about the only thing I'm actually looking forward to, but they didn't have it at E3, so I wouldn't expect that game until Fall 2014 at the earliest.

Did I miss something? Why would SMTxFE be a fighter?

Lego City Wii U and 3DS are two completely different games.

And you're right about Zelda. I was happy just playing Link's Awakening DX and the Oracle games while everybody else was playing Ocarina and Majora's Mask.

Smash 3DS and Smash Wii U will be pretty different from one another too it seems.

It's highly unlikely that intellisystems is interested in a fire emblem fighter, or that two RPG IPs would come together to make a fighter that then needs to sell 700k.

The point of that list was to show value, obviously there are billions of people in the world who have no interest in this list, 10s of millions of gamers that probably have less interest in it than you, but it should make a case for the system to have a value of 150+ to anyone who was ever interested in the console. I do know what you mean, I mm myself have a backlog 20+ titles long, free games I'm interested in and plenty coming out on my 3ds to keep me happy, but I'm greedy, I want it all.

Smash Bros on 3DS will have different stages but the same characters. Game modes and stuff are unknown, but IIRC the way they were initially described made it seem like there could be differences.

Also, Sonic Lost World is also a completely different game on 3DS.

Then again I'm not sure he cares, since every series that appears on both 3DS and WiiU he says he's fine with the 3DS version even if they are known to be completely different games.

Just a few seconds in MSPaint and new WiiU's ad campaing is ready to.

I wonder if they're clearing stock for a new model. That seems quite the drastic price reduction. At $150 I might even consider getting one, maybe.

Yes, everyones assessment of value is identical and anyone who isn't willing to pay 300 is just taking a cheap shot at Nintendo. Please.

The Xbox 360, even with a DVD drive instead of a bluray drive (net -$30 or 40) and no expensive controller, may never reach a proper, non-sale 99 dollars (certainly not in the next couple years). What does that tell you about the people who wouldn't purchase a Wii u until it reaches the year 7 price of the Wii? It tells you that it's a post you can pretty much ignore.

I bought a 360 arcade at $99 new a couple years ago(another canadian sale).
The 8gb at this point is certainly only worth $99 imo. 32GB for $150 I would definitively jump on though.

It tells me that they already have a dvd player and other competitors for their entertainment dollar. Saying that you won't buy a Wii U until its 50 dollars is unrealistic but its not invalid. Money they would spend on a Wii U is better spent (creates more value) on other things.

It tells me that people see more value in the 360 than the Wii U, but that many are willing to impulse buy at a price point they feel reflects the value of the Wii U to them.

If I'm honest, that doesn't sound terribly wild to me, just common sense from consumers.

The cost of the Gamepad is just insane. I believe it's still close to $200 to replace and I just don't know how with the old technology involved.

Other than the silly name, it's apparent the tablet is Nintendo's biggest mistake with the Wii U.

Throw in an updated Wii remote, a Pro Controller, price it $200 and call it Wii 2 and you have a hit.

You can't have a $350 system with no games competing against a $350 PS4 and unfortunately for Nintendo, they can't help it because of the ridiculous price of the Gamepad.

not to mention the Xbox 360 has a highly adopted $50/year paywall they use to subsidize some of the console price and actually has selling volume.

The basic has disappeared from the US. I'm guessing these are just Basics Nintendo wouldn't take. Either way the basic is dead.

Has anyone checked this? I think it won't get any cheaper than this.

edit: I read the OP, apparently in works in Saskatoon, lol; I'll get myself a Wii U today, apparently, lol

Really annoyed that I can't buy one of these as I'm in England until the end of the month.

Might ask a relative to buy one and for me to pay them back afterwards. I imagine I'm too late now though.

Oops, haha, I thought that was the Street fighter x Tekken, my bad!

And yeah, seriously, I have Minish Cap from the ambassador program,
Links Awakening as a Club Nintendo prize,
the DSi 4 swords game,
Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages,
And I think I have Zelda 1+2 as well!
All of those I've either never played or never finished.

True about Smash as well, but I'm more of a single player guy myself and I'm assuming that the 3DS will have a larger focus on that (at least I hope)

Also, Sonic Lost World is also a completely different game on 3DS.

Both correct. I actually wouldn't mind playing Sonic Lost World on the Wii U if I had one, but the 3DS version actually looks to be solid, so it won't be a system seller for me.

And you're right about the games being different, but for me it's not always different enough. I loved Mario Kart DS, but I haven't really been interested in another one since then (if the 3DS Mario Kart had had the Mission Mode I would have bought it day one).
Mario 3D World? I still need to see more of that game, but I haven't loved what I've seen so far.

I'm not against buying any of those franchises on the Wii U if I had one, but since I can already play most franchises on the 3DS I don't have a strong urge to buy a Wii U for at least a year or so. If the Wii U had a new F-Zero, (Retro Developed) Metroid I would buy a $150 Wii U in a heartbeat.

I really want to pick one of these up at that price, but the RFD folk will probably have destroyed any chance of getting these.

I also hate setting foot in Target, so there's that.

I might start calling around to see if they have any in stock.

E: Toronto East York and Danforth locations sold out of Basic.

I give Nintendo plenty of shit and I don't think that the Wii U has too much of a future, but I'd run right down to the store and buy one this minute if I could get one for $150 - even if it's only the Basic model.

The question is - when will we see fire sale pricing in the US? European stores have been doing it for a while, and Canadian stores are jumping into the fray. Can US retailers be that far behind?

I might be wrong, but it seems like Canada has more of these fire sales than the U.S. does. In the U.S., basic bundles are being packed up and sent back to Nintendo presumably to create new bundles.

Maybe the Canadian market is small enough that a fire sale makes more sense than a recall?

Basic set were already removed/discontinued to most (or probably all?) of the retailers in the US.

Where do your relatives live? I think I read somewhere here that there's going to be a stocks this coming Wednesday on Toronto. The sale on walmart will end on Thursday. So, there's still a chance to get one.

edit: Ok, found it.

I asked when the one close to yonge and finch would get new stock and they said Wednesday morning. That's still in the week of Wal Marts deal. Will try again then.

For the people wondering why we don't see these price slashes in the US.
It's simple. Nintendo recalled all the basic units there. You can't buy them at major stores.

$149 is discontinuation pricing... could be to make room for some new bundles, or just flat out not going to carry it (unlikely).

Actually that's the most likely. They have to make room for all the PS4 and X1 promotions, bundles, and space.

It would have been interesting to see if steep discounting in the US would have moved an appreciable number of Basic units. Probably not, but I would have bought one at $150.

Where they surprised when they scanned the Wii U? maybe they were a couple weeks early with the clearence price drop? :p

Someone had called about it earlier, so they already knew about the lower price. I guess I was lucky getting there in time to grab one.

Edit: This update is taking foreeeeever. I want to try out my $10 copy of Nintendo land!
