Killer is Dead Reviews Thread

I hope I enjoy this as much as I enjoyed Shadows of The Damned (a lot). Reviews (professional or otherwise) mean nothing to me. I buy what I want!

Trying to cancel my pre-order (having tech. difficulties). I do want to play this, but will wait for the inevitable price drop.

So, what is he doing? PR? In any case should stop using his name to sell Grasshopper games, if, when not directed by him, they lost his old magic touch becoming just bland copycats of the good old games he did in the past imho
Compared to K7 and NMH1 (great games imho), with a still good but nothing more NMH2, was saw just re-edition of NMH, and a bunch of bland generic action games such as Shadow of the damned, Lollipop Chainsaw and now this

I once loved him, I've even got his autograph and promo materials directly from him for my Killer7 copy once(he visited Italy back at that time to discuss with EA about the publishing of Shadow of the Damned, so I'd really like to see him back at his previous quality levels

My guess is that suda's just...afraid. He's afraid to go out and make a game that he really wants to make in fear of making a product that sells even WORSE than grasshopper's average game. Telling him 'oh don't worry about the sales, just be yourself' wouldn't really work, because even with gungho's support the business side of grasshopper isn't 100%.

What I don't understand is everyone making it a point to say the game isn't a looker. Like seriously? From all the gameplay videos it looks amazing. It's not all normal maps and bloom and high poly everything but it doesn't need to be to look great.

The visual style is really unique. Not for everyone, but it fits the tone of the game really well.

Suda's mostly served as a creative producer/executive director in most of the games he's been involved in as of late. The reason he doesn't direct anymore I assume is because no publisher wants to give him the kind of budget for him to go all out. If you look at what Shadows of the Damned was originally about before Mikami got on board, you'll notice there being a lot of meddling with some of his creative vision. That was an open-world, horror adventure game that turned into a third person action thriller.

Killer7 was completely fucked up and I'm surprised it even got onto the market. It's hard not to appreciate a game like that, hell, Suda to date still considers it his best offering. His vision meant something then. I've come to accept that he'll most likely never do another game like that, but I at least hope that Killer Is Dead will be consistent in what it's trying to do and that the darker atmosphere will pay off.

Still very excited, loved the footage I saw, specially from slasher's stream.

I don't doubt that the game deserves the bad scores, but the complaints about misogynistic contents are coming off as highly hypocritical coming from people that have no problems heaping praise upon the next fascistoid xenophobic modern war shooter for it's engaging and thrill ridden plot. Celebrating perverse mutilations and torture and completely overlooking misogynistic shit in games like God of War.

Still, Suda 51 is a tragic story. So much potential, so much wasted potential.
I loved Killer 7, despite it's horrible controls.

Hm, you have a point.

Very disappointed. Shadows of The Damned and Killer 7 are two of my favorite games. I was really looking forward to this but will wait to pick up at a bargain bin price.

It's trendy now to throw around the term misogyny in the gaming press and make hyperbolic statements wrapped in faux outrage, lot of good examples in these reviews.

You are both probably right, but I..I'm just sad.
I really loved those two games (K7 and NMH1) and seeing his decline his just...sad.
for whatever reason.
Imho.

It sounds like the gameplay itself is fundamentally broken due to the awful camera, well that's a huge shame I was looking forward to this being exciting.

FWIW, I found the camera to be much better than the one in Metal Gear Rising. Like that game it has problems with cramped interior locations but they're few and far between.

You're not alone on that.

In a perfect world, Killer Is Dead would be the perfect combination of everything thematic that Killer7 had to offer, with the combat that this game offers being potentially great. But it doesn't seem like it's all that. At the very least I've usually come to never really read into reviews of Suda games due to the constantly divisive opinions.

I mean, just looking at game play footage it looks pretty nifty and I love the art style and what they're going for. But then there's criticisms such as the game being a technical mess such as camera and screen-tearing among other things which I'd have to play to bear witness to, along with the fact that even on surface levels, you can't tell how completely whacked a Suda game gets.

I'm sad about suda too. When I saw the title for Killer is Dead, I expected suda to return to form and I got really excited.

I very much understand this game getting mediocre to bad reviews, but I really wonder just how much of the badness is directly related to "punishment" for the gigolo missions...

Trendy feminist "journalists" dislike Suda51 game. Shocking.

Still gonna buy it, play it and love it.

Well, worse than expected. Usually that and the mentioning of the occasional screentearing would put me a little off. But having followed the game for a while and having watched the first 2 chapters yesterday, I can say that I still stick with it day one. It has such a fantastic noir tone, great visual style and I loved Killer 7 (NMH was sweet as well, still need to finish it though).

Suda's games are by far not the cream of the crop but they are always a nice and different experience.

I seriously need to buy this. His games are always interesting, no matter what.

Some of it probably is (by contrast, mainland Europe has been much less outraged & generally scored it highly), but it seems the game has some genuine mechanical and technical flaws anyway.

I loved Lollipop chainsaw, Shadows of the Damned. No way on earth will I take these reviews seriously.

Their games always look so rough to me, just look at his arms (NSFW):

Everyone seems made of plastic, one of the ugliest toon shadings I've seen:

People get blinded by the shiny colors and give a pass to the style.

It's a cool look. Very similar to Killer7 except more detailed.

I am more worried about the screen tearing than any of the other "issues" with the game. It generally gives me a headache. I have feeling the game will be cool enough that I'll simply play through it.

Yeah, this'll teach him. Maybe he'll retire, or even better, start making the same types of games as everyone else.

Maybe he will stop trying so hard to different, wacky or edgy? His games just end up being a shitfest full of cliches that this industry is desperately trying to forget.

I mean who is this trying to appeal to? 13 year old otakus?

Suda's an aquired taste. Everything's not made for everyone.

If I cared that much about review scores, I'd have played a lot fewer fun games.

And as for looks-Xenogears is one of the ugliest games I've ever played, but one of my favorite.

You like Suda games and give a shit about reviews?

pls

Who said I like Suda game(s)? I thought this looked cool, and given that I enjoyed Shadows of the Damned, I figured I'd give Killer is Dead a shot. And I'm pretty sure SotD received some good scores.

I'm not doing anything, it's the truth. This game has had a target on its back for months now.
Do you think the score discrepancy from EU reviews to NA reviews is simply a coincidence?

It is weird, true, but who knows what it could be attributed to? There was a campaign against this game by Western press timed perfectly with the ongoing discussion of sexism/feminism in the industry but Suda's games have always been polarizing. It could be a multitude of things at this point. I tend to avoid the tinfoil hat conclusions but if there truly is a campaign going on in North America against this game I'll be the first to eat crow.

See, you keep using the term "his". Anything past NMH1 isn't "his" game (aside from Liberation Maiden).

It could get the worst reviews ever and I would still be excited to play it. I love Grasshopper/Suda games. Let's see, the last Grasshopper game I played was Lollipop Chainsaw and a lot of people didn't like that either. I fucking loved that game.
I wish I was going to be playing this today but I have to wait for a price drop. Not because of bad reviews or because Grasshopper games drop fast but more because I need to buy every game on sale.

If the reviewers didn't like the misogyny in the game then that should be reflected in the score.

the EU and US review divide is interesting guess in EU we don't give a shit or take everything serious lol

Soon as you see words Suda never expect good scores and expect lower if it involves something "sexist"
