People just read the review yourself, form a score in your head and use the review score as a multiplier for the final score.

Yeeeah people you can feel ok about "pretending that review doesn't exist" as some of the other media people in here are saying. It's not getting up in arms about a lower review, it's about ignoring someone who doesn't know what the hell they're talking about in games. That dragon age 2 review was a fucking joke that, at the time, felt like it was being paid off.

Mixed messages. If his Dragon Age 2 review implies that his standards are low/that he was bought (Right..) then wouldn't that make his 3.5 look even worse in GTAV's case?

The does nothing new but thats ok thing 10 anyway kind of gets on my nerves. People hated on 4 so I can only imagine the same will happen in a few months with 5 if the reviews are anything to go by.

Nobody works on this scale period and many reviews say the mechanics are much improved, the game takes itself less seriously and there are more ways to cpplete missions.

"solid 25fps"

Depressing... I understand the hardware limitations, but playing such a gimped version of this first time is a hard pill to swallow.

That's why I'm waiting for it on PC. I have zero interest in dealing with eight year old technical shackles anymore, especially with next-gen consoles just two months away. I want to experience the game under the best possible conditions.

Yeah somehow I doubt giving Dragon Age II a 10 has anything to do with a person's standards. Unless we are talking about ethical standards

Don't know why people are freaking out about the misogynistic thing on Gamespot (more so on Gamespot's site than here). Carolyn enjoyed the game quite a bit.

This is absolutely a valid criticism. The game is reviewed as a whole. So that means, yes, story and character development is just as important as gameplay mechanics, graphics, and audio design.

Escapist vocalized what I expected to hear and, honestly, has been my #1 source of contention on whether or not I purchase this game. Rockstar simply pushes the boundaries of what is tasteful only to push the boundaries. There's often times little reason for the excess of sex and violence, and, as the player, I am forced to make a connection with these scenarios that I, personally, don't want to make. It winds up making the experience slimey, offensive, and off-putting. And one could make the argument that Rockstar has succeeded in this case, except I don't want these negative feelings when I am engaging in one of my pastimes.

The fundamental difference between GTA and the culturally significant films it takes its homages from, is that as a movie viewer one is passive. You are simply a bystander to the ills (or positives) that the characters on-screen take. There's is no puppetmaster connection, as there is in video games. In Goodfellas, we watch Henry Hill and his friends build their empire, make poor choices, then fall from grace. As the viewer, I'm not invested in the character in a way that makes watching his final cocaine-fueled paranoia my own. But in GTA, I have to make Trevor's sociopathic and homicidal tendencies my own. Which, of course, I don't want to take that on in any capacity.

It’s worth mentioning that when it comes to sex, drugs, and violence, GTA V pushes boundaries much further than ever before. If the morality police were worried about Hot Coffee, there’s a lot here that will provoke moral hysteria. It’s deliciously subversive, and firmly tongue in cheek... but once or twice, it pushes the boundaries of taste, too. There’s one particular scene, a torture scene in which you have no choice but to actively participate, that I found so troubling that I had difficulty playing it; even couched in obvious criticism of the US government’s recourse to torture post 9/11, it’s a shocking moment that will attract justified controversy. It brings to mind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s No Russian mission, except worse, and without the option to skip over it. Some other stuff, like the ever-present prostitution and extensive strip-club minigames, feels like it’s there just because it can be rather than because it has anything to say.

I'm looking at the video review (probably too many of them, getting a bit spoiler loaded now...), and I'm really looking forward to this. Looks absolutely great, but maybe not for everyone because of its content.

Escapist's review is a perfectly legitimate take on the game.

That has zero value to anyone even remotely considering buying the game. Which, is... I mean it's fair enough. We know some people won't like it for the reasons in that review. As critique it has value, but... very very little. Because that critique isn't any more particularly interesting now than it was when Grand Theft Auto original came out.

Lots of hyperbole from the bigger guys, as expected, but its good to see the game hitting the 9 range with smaller outlets as well. While its probably the least groundbreaking GTA yet, after IV all we ever needed was a new GTA done right, packed with content and activities, and it looks like it'll be great fun.

Cant wait for midnight.

I don't share your will power. I need it tomorrow.

But I can't wait for 6 months down the line with my PC absolutely owning the game!

You're thinking about it too much. All I'm saying is ignore anything that's coming from that guy regardless of score or content. I have certain reviewers blacklisted that I always ignore if they fuck up that egregiously because they can't be trusted to know what they're talking about (it's a bit tougher for me since I usually remember these reviews by outlet and not individual reviewer). Now that I know who wrote the Escapist's review he could have given it a 15/10 or a 2/10 and I wouldn't have paid any attention to it.

Tom Chick's another one. He can give it a 5/5 and say it's the best game ever made and even if I end up agreeing with that I'll still ignore his review.

Yea this game like GTAIV is going to be hailed as the greatest game ever. Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. Not saying it won't be great but i know a lot of people are going to say this similarly with IV. Still picking it up day 1 for sure

Shame about some of the story grossness. I'm probably not going to be offended or anything, but was hoping for a little more nuance from them, because I know they can do that stuff so well. Bonnie MacFarlane is easily one of the more memorable characters Rockstar has ever done.

Still very much hyped though. Sounds like the game is pretty amazing.

I'm going to love this game. I can already tell. But the amount of hyperbole is thick here.

Much like the inertia that people experienced from having the game before others, some are already jumping the gun when the game looks to be a blast. You can critique the story with a microscope but what matters to me is having fun while playing and all GTA's have delivered on that front. The main reason we all want to play this is to mess around in that sandbox while experiencing some story. Can't wait for the MP.

i couldn't get past the opening paragraph of polygon's review. it's awful.

With Grand Theft Auto 5, developer Rockstar North aspires to re-establish GTA as the most important video game franchise in the world, to further raise the bar, the budget, the breadth of experience of the big games

the big games

How on earth did I miss that? Good fucking lord.

Gonna wait on the ps4 version and for all the crazy to calm down. I can't believe gta hype anymore not after everyone gave the last one ridiculously high reviews.

Very well deserved scores across the board, and it's only half the game as it is missing the multiplayer component.

No doubt in my mind that this is the game of this generation.

Eh, predictable.
After what happened with IV I can't take reviewers seriously, I'll wait till shit cools down and base it off what public opinion is like then.

People need to stop using this logic 'cause it does not apply to every developer. Rockstar is the valedictorian of the gaming industry and this generation, and scores like this definitely don't look well on their transcript. A 3.5 out of 5 might be good for C average developers, but not Rockstar.

Holy shit.

:lol

Those are some crazy numbers. I've only ever played GTA:SA, and the series as a whole has never captured my imagination like a lot of people, but I'll definitely be playing this... later. Look forward to picking it up eventually on the PS4.

Take GTA SA, put a 3 person twist on it, nice story, funny and memorable characters, amazing graphics and big detailed world with polished gameplay. You are not gonna be disappointed. Nobody will, it's not GTA IV.
