XB1 TV features to be supported only for US/Japan at launch

I'm surprised not even the UK?

We have SKY, Virgin Media & Freeview boxes, shouldn't be too hard.

Shame it's only pass through then.

he mentions HDMI in scendarios, only cable providers using HDMI outputs on their boxes will work. I think he may have simply been generalizing a bit here.

He mentions stuff about over the air TV, whcih would not be using HDMI outputs, and therefore can't be used, which isn't too uncommon in many places. Also many cable providers are still using component outputs for their boxes, once again of no use for the X1.

Canada, for example has Rogers and Bell for their most common TV providers (there are a few more, but tend to be more region specific) They have boxes that use HDMI, but many of the older boxes still only have component connections. You'd need a new box for it to work.

He's basically speaking about the cable box availability. Or at least that what I understand. Many European countries are using HDMI TV antennas and wouldn't be able to use the TV features.

I can only speak from my country, but here in Denmark people with over the air TV still has a box connected that does HDMI, and here it is either terrestial cable directly into the TV or a box either connected to over the air or IPTV.

This Penello quote has to be one of the worst platform holder quotes ever.
"You (the customer) and I (Microsoft PR, even he's down on the TV features?) won't care for the feature with which we've introduced the console to the world anyway. We don't really have a solution or talk about plans - effectively we're playing for time, but when that time has passed, your parents (only teenagers seem to buy the console at launch) will have become fans of Kinect and the'll want an Xbone. Then we'll totally have awesome fun!!!!"

That can't be real.
Well it was my sarcastic translation of the Penello quote in the op. So it's not real, but basically it's what it sounds to me.

That doesn't even make sense since Japan isn't getting any launch units?

Yes, but when it does launch in Japan (sometime this decade), The xbox one will have this functionality straight away. Similarly when it launches on Mars, it will have this functionality straight away too.

So they fucked up the perception ppl have of the X1 from day 1 for a feature that won't even be properly implemented, if at all, in most regions?

Genius.

This is what really separates the Xbox One from the PS4. The PS4 is simply a gaming machine whereas the Xbox One is your all in one entertainment multimedia device. It's good to see they've got all this stuff ready at launch, I think consumers will really see the difference and respond accordingly.

Your check is in the mail.

As a gamer, it is precisely these features that could hurt it as a gaming machine due to the need to reserve resources for those features. I think snap and some of the sports score integration stuff is cool. but not that much of a killer app when everybody has a smartphone/tablet.

Threw away so many potential buyers from other countries for features not even available to them. That makes no sense.

  1. Launch TV features where TV is on the edge of becoming irrelevant due to web services (Netflix, Hulu and alike)
  2. Show no signs of releasing those features in territories where it still is relevant (Europe).
  3. ??? Pull a 180.
  4. Profit.

Oh you smart motherfuckers at Redmond.

I believe some still use component cables.

Besides, he could also just be speaking about the enhanced guide, which I believe was already said the enhanced guide stuff wouldn't even be at launch for most places already.

Basic cable functionality should still work with a HDMI in, considering the X1 basically just uses the Kinect IR as a Universal remote. You'd still get to use voice commands, change channels, volume etc. Just no fancy X1 related guide recommendations.

If you get a digital guide, you'd just get the pre-existing features.

I think not. Consumers already have everything else.
Now all they want is to play freaking new gen GAMES!

Yep, I am seeing €100 more to the price tag and no TV features (I wasn't really interested anyway). From Italy with love.

To counter this kind of bad announcement, they could always explain how the IR blaster features and HDMI pass through are going to work. Is it going to be possible to get it to work with any HDMI set-top box? Will it have presets for popular ones? Will it be properly configurable? Given the silence, I assume it's going to be a bit of a half-arsed non-feature.

Aside from Sky, there are other expanding TV services in the UK that use HDMI set-top-boxes. For example, YouView, a collaboration between the UK's four terrestrial broadcasters and telecoms companies. Mind you, as YouView is non-profit, like BBC's iPlayer, Microsoft might not be able to get away with locking it behind XBL Gold.

As a huge fan of the old Xbox and the 360, I've STILL got an Xbox One pre-order in. But with the complete lack of info on the few games I was interested in (Forza, Quantum Break) and the constant PR screw ups, I'm getting closer and closer to cancelling it. If it were still possible to pre-order a PS4 for launch day in the UK, I'd probably switch today.

Excellent, Microsoft! This would be a fantastic time to discuss a pricetag reduction commensurate with the inferior product you are offering us.

I've said this all along, this is pointless for me. I already use my 360 as a MCE to my HTPC. Why would I go out and get a cable box just so the One can get TV?

I really wish they would have left Media Center in the ONE. Maybe something down the line will come out that will integrate live TV without the need to IR blast a cable box...

What is funny is that most people who are interested in buying the next Xbox would be doing so for the games anyway. Had they just kept gaming as the main focus of the design and marketing from the get-go, then they would have quite a different image and would be in a much stronger position right about now. Instead, they had to waste time backtracking on all of their insane policies aimed at the gamer, while trying to remind everyone that it still plays games as well. This all-in-one TV focus has flop written all over it and I think they know that now, but it is just too late to turn back.

So, to be clear... Microsoft shows a bunch of TV features... GAF responds "GAAHHH FUCK NO WHERE ARE THE GAMES LOL XBONE!"

Now, at launch, the primary function of the One will be playing games, and GAF responds "GAAHHH FUCK LOL MS WHERE'S THE TV YOU PROMISED? FUCK GAMES."

All the channels in the UK are basically the same, and each provider has a subset of them (terrestrial DVBH, Virgin, Sky, youview, BT etc), and each provider will also have unique channel numbers assigned to them. But the channels are the same

All of that data is readily available to license centrally, as are IR databases for the set top boxes - my WiiU can turn my TV over so if Nintendo can do it there is no excuse for MS

So it does take effort, but most of the heavy lifting has already been done in terms of access to that data.

It is really disappointing if true.

I really dont understand what MS are doing. This is one of the worst launches of any product I have ever seen. It is all just half assed mismatch between regions. I was never gonna buy a Xbone, but I would be extremely annoyed if I was seeing America getting everything at launch and Europe not getting much feature wise.

No if you push the device as an all in one multimedia device and it only works in one region at launch people are going to take issue with that.

So they're equally bad at both now? What's the confusion?

Nah, now it's both: "GAAHHH FUCK NO WHERE ARE THE GAMES LOL XBONE!" AND "GAAHHH FUCK LOL MS WHERE'S THE TV YOU PROMISED? YOU CAN'T EVEN GET THAT RIGHT."

This is why they stuck FIFA in with preorders for europe, some sugar for the medicine.

Where the hell did you pull that shit from?

Sky has 10.4 million TV subscribers and less than half are HD customers.

hahah off the interwebs, put it in its one of the top ones granted i think its wrong but there you go. Still 10 million boxes and ms cant sort the fucking thing out its an utter joke. Sky is a massive brand all across europe and ms couldnt sort it out, Makes a joke of the whole tv push.

This would also be the case for the Xbox One Guide; there are countless mobile apps and TV guide websites that must be automatically ingesting programming data from somewhere. With that in mind it seems mad for Microsoft not to launch with at least the Guide in their biggest European territory. Also mad for Penello not to give a positive answer explaining the ways you CAN use TV pass-through in non-fully-supported countries. Like you say, if it is a non-starter outside of the US and Japan, it's very disappointing.

I just know that "further down the line" means never. They never ever supported voice commands through Kinect on Xbox 360 here in Denmark and now we are tier 2 for Xbox One. I can't help but feel we are unimportant to them, so screw Microsoft - even though I'll probably still end up with a Xbox One.

GAF is merely responding to what a clusterfuck their messaging has been in general. They introduced the Xbox One to the tune of TV, TV, TV, ALL-IN-ONE, TV... ad nauseum. But now it turns out that the function they were pushing so hard is going to be excluded from most of the planet for who knows how long? So, it makes one wonder why the hard push in that direction in the first place?

Not to mention the gimped specs so they could focus on all of this other shit and the horrendous policies that were aimed at the gamers from the start. Yes, they have reversed course due to the pressure, but their original intent was something far different. It has just been a mess all around. Slice it up any way you wish, but those facts remain the same.

no, now we're like

"WTF, you made all that noise about TV, compromised the performance of the box so you could do all that entertainment stuff, and you don't even have it ready!?"

'Murica box.

Would like to understand why Japan though that has the TV features over EU when Japan doesn't even receive theirs until a bit into 2014?

Xbox One launches in Europe in November but TV features won't be available.
TV will be ready in Japan but no release date for that market.
Why they continue to release such confusing messages? Just shut up about Japan for now until you have a solid release date.

Seems futile to put focus on Japan, but, gotta say, it's admirable.
I don't think they're neccesarily focusing on japan. Its just that the broadcast rules there are so laxed. Dvd tv recorders were never even available here while everyone in japan had one.

"So the basic experience of HDMI-in will be available for anybody that has TV with HDMI-in"

I had to re-read it. When the article says US and Japan, I think he's actually just referring to the HDMI set top box penetration, not necessarily that the XB1 TV won't work in other territories.

They need to demo this shit quickly.
