The Final Bosman Show

he must dislike a lot of games if he only cares about the scenarios he is presented and not the actual encounters that take place organically in a mp game

See the thing I like about Kyle is how positive he is most of the time. Nice change of pace because we've got to many negative internet personalities in the game industry again.

Also I guess I'm not that Hyped for Titanfall, I mean it looks fun but I'm not a big multiplayer guy so I don't know how long it could grip me. Hopefully I can play it at Eurogamer next week and see if it'll blow mah mind

Not just one of his worst videos, but one of the worst "opinion" pieces I've seen in a long time. I still like him, but that was awful.

I can relate to the overall sentiment, and I feel this way about deathmatch-y games in general, but his reasoning felt a little flat. I think the appeal is less about feeling cool and more about competetivity. Giving you a set of tools, rules and an arena that allow you to prove you (and your team) are better than the others. It scratches an itch a lot of people have. Video games are pretty well suited for this sort of thing.

Yeah. I'm not following Titanfall too closely at the moment, but even still... The fact that I disagree his opinion or whatever isn't really the issue, it's that he did an uncharacteristically sloppy job of presenting and making a case for his opinion.

It's definitely a weak episode. Not totally broken, but it does feel like it has a heavier slant to it than normal. Usually his opinion pieces have a strong counter argument, but this seems like he doesn't care for Titanfall's presentation at all. That's what I took away from it.

I don't think he said that at all.

1. He says that people he has talked to who like Titanfall tell him it feels good to move around in the game.
2. He says that this does not interest him, because he mainly plays games for the scenario.
3. He says that Mario has a good scenario because you are a plumber saving a princess, and therefore he has a motivation (note: I am not being reductive. This is actually what he says).
4. He suggests that if the scenario to Mario were changed so that Mario were just in it for the coins, he wouldn't like the game.

Didn't he use that "Phillp Dollarfield" bit before in an earlier episode?

Yes but it used to be a kid friendly platformer but he's satirically changing it to a typical fps deathmatch game with buzzwords.

I laughed when he said one of the features is "Fiona Apple" We need a gif of the "rad" "tubular" "flowaceous" part.

Agree alot with this episode. I feel the same way, which is surprising since im a huge Robot/Mech fan.

Maybe its a "have to play it" thing, but other than that does not look all that interesting to me.

I have to share his sentiment. I'm probably going to pick this up to play with friends but I'll just have to play it to get the hype I guess. Foot soldier mobility is the most interesting thing about the game but I have to say that I'm not digging the overall art direction of the game, and I'm not that excited about riding mechs.

"Danger! Your Titanfall is happening!"

died.

I have to say that the concept of 'having a reason to be there' in a game is something that resonates with me a lot. I've had games with weak stories but enough of a reason for me being there that I can ignore them and enjoy the gameplay. At the same time, when a game has either no reason or a really awful 'motivation' for you, really good gameplay can be ruined.

Can use 2 tales games as examples. Tales of Xillia has a basic concept for the story at least early on, and it does take a while to get going, but the goal is enough to keep me going. Tales of Graces had superior gameplay but such an awful 'scenario' that I could not stand playing it.

Would be more into TitanFall if it embraced it's mechs, instead of being ashamed of 'mecha'. The mecha gameplay looks like the standing gameplay but you're taller.

Another good one. I have to admit I got super excited when he said he was working on a game, then I realised it was a joke...

Can you IMAGiNE?

I agree with him completely, to me it looks like just another shooter and I have massive shooter fatigue right now so my brain just turns off whenever I see Titanfall.

He lost me when he said saving the princess in Mario was sexist. I guess he's been watching those intellectually disingenuous Feminist Frequency videos.

I agree with his general sentiment about Titanfall, though. At least I think I do, he didn't really expand much on the idea.

I must admit, I was never enamored by Titanfall. I mean, the parkour and mech elements definitely make it a little more interesting than a straight FPS, but that isn't really enough to hook me, and the game looks pretty generic, artistically, so that doesn't do anything for me either.

Luckily I can get away with a single line of text telling me why I'm there and what I need to do.

Sometimes I don't even need that.

Stories for the most part suck, so all I really require is context, and context that frames all the micro and macro decision-making I'll be dealing with when playing the game.

That said, this seems like a very strange criticism to level at TitanFall, which looks like its trying to imbue these multiplayer matches with some wider context and some form of narrative.

And for those who think of it as COD with mechs, I just... you know, its not even worth the effort to spell out how wrong that is.

Yeah that bit completely lost me too. I have no idea how that could be considered sexist.

The problem is the COD design philosophy; pandering to shit players by offering endless 'perks' that enhance players for time spent rather than skill.

All competitive multiplayer games should be purely skilled based as far as I'm concerned. Your weapons are available from the start, there are never any perks, and all it becomes is the most intense skill-based enterprise around competition: your twitch reflexes and accuracy versus theirs. No 'benefit' because he has slightly more health than you thanks to perks. No 'benefit' because his weapon does slightly more damage than yours thanks to perks. It's all bullshit. Infinity Ward as far as I'm concerned destroyed the competitive multiplayer genre for an entire generation by popularizing the idea of perks, and thus making every fucking game of theirs an insufferable march of unbalanced nonsense rewarding shit players for doing nothing but having more time.

My problem is I feel Titanfall will simply follow this standard at Respawn. I am sure I read they will have a perk-like system in place, and knowing how these guys love this shit and popularized this shit, I am more than a little concerned it'll follow suit.

If not for that, I'd be more interested. But it doesn't have to be "COD WITH MECHS" to follow some of CoD's worst design philosophies, which I think is more in line with many people's fears.

If that were the case, then there would be no need for the product since we already have COD and BF3. What is Titanfall offering over these guys? Power. That's what people are excited about. The power to control mechs, the power to leave them and take them down, the power to fluidly run along walls, etc. I think Kyle's looking for motivation, beyond having the ability to do these things.

I put 100+ hours into Skyrim, beating both main story lines, and the main reason was because I spent $60 and wanted to see what the game had to offer. I never really was able to grab onto a good reason within the game world to keep playing. I was strung along the story in confusion as to what the outcome of my actions would be. And the fact that the rest of the world continues to churn mostly unchanged after the events confirms for me that they didn't mean anything much in any character's daily life. Dragons still terrorize the land. The bards continue to sing. Perhaps that is Kyle's point... the premise/story was a pretty blatant facade that was really built around making you feel flowaceous.

Man, GT is now blocking users who use ad-blockers. Fuck, their ads in my country give me viruses. Anyone has an extension that counters the anti-ad-blocker.

Still, nice episode.

Go to the support page/forum of the adblocker you're using and ask them to update. Shouldn't take long to do so.

I agree with what he's saying, that on paper power isn't everything, but it certainly wasn't as entertaining as usual.

The ending was great though lol

Haha, I think it was probably in reference to him being sick last week and undoubtedly cranky. It was probably a sideways attempt at an apology for anyone he might've cranked at.

Oh yeah, that makes perfect sense. Didn't think about that. Like always, great episode!

I interpreted it to mean he thought Fiona Apple was cool. .. and for people who don't give a damn about princess peach, but really enjoy wave-riding cheetahs.

Goodness. Just re-reading that sentence really hit me with how absurd this video game show is. So endearing.

Awww :( There was a serious lack of drawings in this episode (aside from the title intro of course!).

I gotta know what will happen between Fiona and him now. NEW SUBPLOT!

I fully agree with the titanfall opinion, but it kind of dragged on.

All he needed to say was that the game looked brown and grey (and stupid) and be done with it.
