It will probably be in the same ballpark; it'll probably sell over 5m in the first few days.

Not trying to be a downer, but it wont come close. I'm not diminishing at all what it's going to do, and it's going to do well, but it isn't going to come close to sniffing GTA5's numbers. Those numbers were otherworldly and the product of the fact that it was released on two consoles that each have about 80 million units sold.

Why, what's so funny? Fictional games always appealed to me more than "realistic/mature" games. Mostly because I can't stand the notion that photorealism = "epik mat00r adult gaem". Doesn't mean I don't think that The Last of Us is the best game I have played this generation of consoles.

No way it can beat GTAV, though right?

You're talking about the most hyped up game of all time with the largest budget of all time on two platforms with an install base of 150 million versus a(n) (admittedly huge) franchise second only to Mario coming out on ONE system with an install base of ~35 million. No chance it pulls GTAV numbers. It can however, hope to match either one platform's individual sales day one, which considering the differences in their situations, is still a hugely impressive performance.

And when it comes to LTD, X and Y have a small chance of remaining competitive with GTAV. Small, but not impossible.

good and exaustive answer

Kids don't have permission to line up early in the morning, lol.

Anyway, XY will outsell Skyrim in the first 2 days.

Skyrim: 3.5 million

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-11-16-skyrim-sells-over-3-5-million-in-48-hours

Pokemon will debut with more than 2 million in Japan alone.
BW launched in America to something like 1 million in a day. Assuming that Europe's numbers are strong enough and Japan hits 2 million day one, X and Y should do well enough to easily beat Skyrim's first day.

Actually, GTA is bigger than Mario now.

I wish to be able to attend on this sometimes, sounds like fun meeting people you know are going for the same thing. If the next games still have lines, that is.

Mario as an entire franchise is nearing a billion units sold (~800 million). GTA is well over 100 million, but somewhere below Pokemon's 250 million units sold as an entire franchise. There's no doubt that GTA outdoes the mainline Mario games individually, but as a whole Mario is a much larger franchise. Mario Kart Wii outsold the best selling individual GTA game (San Andreas, something like 27 million units versus 33 million for MKWii), even if that was a freak accident. So no, GTA is not bigger.

It's certainly more relevant to the modern gaming industry, though.

I don't think it'll sell the same amount as the past generation of Pokemon because the DS has a much larger install base.

I'm betting probably 8-10 million lifetime sales. Which is still incredible.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.

GTA is bigger than any other game, movie, or music if all the sales records it shattered in the first week are anything to go by but I digress.

Seeing midnight lineups always gets me hyped, too bad there's no midnight releases around my area.

Dude stop. Don't waste your time on him. He's trolling. He has been like that with other Nintendo related topics.

DS has around 150 million units sold worldwide to date.

3DS has sold 33 Million worldwide to date.

X and Y won't do half the numbers that Black and White did.

And... Black and White did not release while the DS had 150 million units sold. You can't just... oh, forget it.

The 3DS audience is big enough to where it will open high and the rest is really dependent on sales over time.

Yes me too. Fortunately I think they're selling it before midnight here so I won't be waiting long!

I'm at Nintendo World. The line stretched on for several blocks.

Was gonna head out to the nintendo world event but between the annoying drive on a friday and the crowd i just decided to hit up a nearby gamestop at midnight =/

im in S.I. so the traffic can be a bitch and so is parking.

True, you should also factor there will be a ton of people finally buying a 3DS just for this game though.

the more important figure is how many DS's were in active use and purchasing new software during black and white and how many 3DS's are in active use now. that 150M figure doesn't tell us that. a lot of DS units broke, a lot of people owned multiple ones with new SKUs, a lot of people stopped buying new games, a lot of people threw them in the closet. a lot of those people were also never going to buy pokemon anyways because they wanted brain age casual stuff.

Black and White did comparable numbers to its predecessors, Diamond and Pearl. When they came out, the DS was only slightly ahead of the install base of the 3DS.

The series is pretty consistent in its numbers, usually doing in excess of 10 million, closer to 20 million units. It has every opportunity to perform within the league of the DS games, especially since the DS games didn't match what the Game Boy games did, and that system had a smaller overall install base than the DS. The series' success isn't really tied to the install base.
