Day 1 patch makes COD: Ghosts SP 1080p on PS4, is 720p without patch

dofry

That's "Dr." dofry to you.
well there is the CHANCE that he makes a point - despite his way of writing, which is driving me insane.

True, true. I just focus my attention to the other posters that make sense. If there is a point made, I can always backtrack and view the post in question.
The times now at GAF are really hard when there are a lot of shots fired, personal attacks and taking stances in wars that it's really annoying to follow topics. Makes me want to ignore half of the posters, but I trust mods mow down most of the annoying ones. Have to trust their expertise.

Lol guys, arguing with theKayle is futile. All it will result in is repeated cyclical arguments and a ton of brain damage. And the heat death of the universe.

Maybe he doesn't own a 1080p tv*.

infact if I was Sony one AD would be- Finally use that expensive 1080p HD TV you bought, you may as well get your monies worth.

* I know he probably does.

I know, I thought it was incredible. He'd rather throw his own credibility (or his peer's credibility) under the bus than to admit that God forbid, PS4 version actually will look visibly better. I really have a problem even believing they only compared MP like he's saying. You kind of have to be legitimately part-blind to not be able to see the difference that is a non-AA pixel soup of 720p and something rendered in a native 1080 resolution of a TV screen.

It's like some kind of religious fanatism where the sense of self worth is distant second to utmost belief in a "higher power". Except he's doing that over what exactly?

I guess you haven't heard of his previous scandals, check out this one: http://www.p4rgaming.com/ea-hires-arthur-gies-as-simcity-spokesperson/

He obviously has a fanatic personality. He really would sacrifice anything just to defend his viewpoint. Let's just be glad he's only a gaming site editor and not some politician or powerful religious figure.

I don't care if theoretical average Joe can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. I buy games for me and what I can see and play on my TV.

720p is objectively worse. Period. If scaling was an acceptable substitute for higher resolution - developers would not pursue higher resolution, it's that simple. Whilst there is considerable pressure for that 'Full HD' marketing bullet point, every developer knows that twice the pixel resolution natively rendered is visually significant.

We should want the highest resolution possible that can be achieved in harmony with all the other performance metrics that affect the game experience. Anybody arguing otherwise on 2013, 8 years after the first introduction of 'HD' consoles, should be dragged along with the rest of us to expect more.

Joe can't tell the difference...but we should give him 1080p anyway. He deserves it and so do you.

i havent followed this from the beginning entirely, so apologies if this is waaaay off. it also doesnt apply to each and everyone of you in this thread or others, but rather *gaf as a whole (a collection of people). but there really seems to be some revisionist history going on here.

you are *all joes. had this new resolution gate not been uncovered by that single individual, you *joes would still be claiming that only idiots couldnt tell the difference in resolution and its plain as day how much more detailed ghosts looks (in single player) on ps4 then x1.

much of this, admittedly, is because only a very very few are actually seeing the game on ps4 in person though. but still!

No we are not.

99.9% of the people on this board did not even own either or both the ps4, or COD:Dogs at that point, and the fact that the one person could actually tell from looking at framebuffer captures is pretty much a confirmation that most people who were interested enough to post here would have noticed had they had the hardware and the software.

My hair is a bird and all that.

You should apologize for underestimating us, not for being late.

Whether it was ever revealed or not, I can easily see the difference between native 1080p and upscaled 720p and I literally have no idea how people could not see it.

Wait is that even possible, I thought you can't increase resolution via a patch?
or is this a glitch that outputs a 1080p render in 720p? would explain why people said PS4 look better even though it was 720p

Perfect answer! It's insane how so many people use other peoples alleged opinions of some sort of "Average Joe" (does he even exist? if so - how many?) to legitimate a shitty product or their own opinion. Instead of just giving their own feelings. I don't even understand what the motivation behind that is. "Hey people, MS tries to fuck us over, but hey, average joe won't notice, so it's not important." HILARIOUS.

I don't care what average joe thinks. I don't give a fuck. I'm owning a 1080p TV now since 2007. That is six years now, guys. Six years. The only content which TV will get from this day on is NATIVE 1080p, because everything else looks shit and PC got me used to that standard.

I'd say it's a fairly safe assumption. It's simple maths.

You should assume nothing. Play the game and if it's stable pre-patch and you like 720p stick with it. That's your choice. But should consider that there maybe other technical problems that the patch addresses, frame-rate included.

Good luck.

You can, but it's exceptionally rare since the performance sink would be significant and extremely difficult to offset with optimizations, especially post-launch when developers have presumably shifted manpower to new projects. Only example that comes to my mind is ZoE: HD collection on the PS3, where Konami had an outside studio come in and do some serious optimization on ZoE2, which allowed them to get better FPS and a higher output resolution. In the case of Ghosts, it'll simply be rectifying a mistake, so presumably it won't come with any additional performance cost.

If I'm not mistaken, weren't devs and gamers bragging about how doing 1080p 60fps was so easy on the PS4?

What happened?

i do ..re read the other post that i did...about this "differences"

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=89783114&postcount=1494

if i show u that lower res version saying is 1080p...

withtou anything to compare on...im more incline to say that you (or most ppl) will trust is 1080p...coz..this differences arent great as ppl wanna think and all this case..is the clear proof of evidence

No I would say the leaves look muddy and the power line has tons of jaggies, so it doesn't look like 1080p, but that's because I know where to look. I agree with you that if we showed it to an average gamer without showing the actual 1080p native version they'd believe you that it's 1080p. I think we need to teach people how to tell the difference between 720p native and 1080p native, and it's actually not hard to do.

They need to know where to look and why there's a difference. There's a difference because 1080p contains more than twice as many pixels as 720p, the more pixels there are the more sharper and more detailed the image is. When you upscale an image the scaler increases the size of the image and the only way it could do that is by guessing, for example to increase a 720p leaf to 1080p it would take the average color of the leaf and use that to fill in the pixels. That creates the "muddy look."

The places to look for are things that require a lot of detail such as foliage, powerlines, eyes, individual hairs, fur, licence plates, text on clothes/buildings/walls, the weapon the character is holding, etc. If these types of things look muddy to you it's very likely you're looking at something that is below 1080p native quality.

Lol, so all 1080p< games look like shit now? Hyperbole much?

I'm one of the people for whom 720p~900p to 1080p is not very noticeable. I do notice very poor framerates or screen tears. Each to their own though. Some people just don't notice it, end of.

Ignore if already in 720p.

TheSixthAxis posted a article confirming that their video comparison was running in 720p for single-played and posted two separated video for the MP on both consoles.

http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2013/11...-single-player-recieving-day-one-1080p-patch/

Now it is your turn IGN? You are the only in denial.

Xbone footage is blurry, PS4 footage is way more sharper. even with compression you can see a difference.

still a shitty game though...

I'm seeing a lot more aliasing in the xbox version... I don't even need a side by side comparison, the ps4 version looks much better.

No hyperbole. The jump in image quality and graphical fidelty from non native to native resolution is way more important and noticable when everything else. No developer sould use a different base than 60FPS/native resolution.

Now we have an admission that PS4 SP was played in 720p should we have a new thread to highlight this along with the current, and now refuted, denials by IW and IGN

I believe this day 1 patch is now live, I just saw a 743MB ghosts download pop into my notifications area. (i could be wrong, but downloading now and will report back)

Yes, need a report on this!

Ok, I saw a couple frame-rate hitches here and there during the set pieces (like chasing your brother as the earth is breaking apart), but during the action sequences where you're in control and shooting it was smooth throughout. I'm also downloading a bunch of other stuff on my PS4 the background and I'm not sure if that plays a part at all, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I haven't spent a lot of time in COD either, so someone else more knowledgeable will have to provide better feedback about the frame rate (been spending most of my time in Killzone). But I did play just now from the beginning of the game all the way up until you ride in the tank with Riley. :) Even if there are always frame-rate hitches during the set pieces, I wouldn't care as the upgrade to 1080p is really a great improvement over the 720p version I played yesterday in my eyes.

Hope that helps. I'm sure one of the more hardcore COD players can provide more feedback for you guys on the framerate and such later.
