PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

I also have a working unit from Hongfujin Yantai, manufactured in September 2013.

No problems after 6+ hours, other than the menu skipping back to that first block late in the day yesterday.

Condolences to everyone having problems.

Do people think that Yoshida is now working in Customer Support? He looks after the first party line-up.

Those PS4 brick things and all make me scared...

Why not opening a thread, with 2 groups: people who have a working PS4, people who have a bricked/hdmi problem, etc PS4? Then we can have a (little) idea of the purcentage of all this mess. I dunno if it's a good idea, I was just thinking about it now. :)

i suggested that before lol. we have one for the people with ps4 issues. but no thread for the people with a perfectly working ps4.

I work at a best buy and out of the 250 we sold today we had 2 doa.

Ouch. That is terrible. Come on, one day and 2 are dead already. This is unacceptable. And I was thinking that due to the low power processor and stuff we wouldn't have these kinds of problems.

It's also funny that some people were thinking this would happen with the XBone due to yield issues and so on.

Sony lied
It's 0,8%, not 0,4%

European Preorder cancelled

Really?

Sorry if you are being sarcastic but it's hard to tell these days.

Can someone give a quick summary of the most common problem/s and what data we have so far? Is there a common manufacturing location and/or month?

I wish more people had the same issue as me. I'd almost feel better about it knowing I was one of many, not just part of an unlucky few. My console works fine for 10 minutes, then the controller is unresponsive. If I reset the controller it works again for 10 minutes and becomes unresponsive again. I've tested the controller elsewhere and it works fine. Seems like it is an interfacing issue with the console itself. This is both wired and wireless. I hope it doesn't become an issue when I eventually get a replacement. I was able to register the PS4 as my home console before I discovered the issue. I'm seriously considering canceling my XBONE preorder as well. I really don't want to beta test consoles anymore...

So I just downloaded Netflix fine, and when I went to log into my account, it is now frozen at the red Netflix screen.

Pressing the PS Button makes the controller flash white. What should I try?

EDIT: Nevermind, just rebooted it in Safe Mode and it is now fine. I guess I'll be avoiding Netflix for the time being.

So I just read there are many complains of broken PS4s out there and I am now concerned of my box.

Here's my experience with it using it for 2 hours or so for Be,killzone, and resogun. I did USB 1.5 patch and after patching, first time booting, the UI got bugged at the guide. Was not showing the whole page (some img wasn't loaded). There was instruction for buttons but DS4 wasn't functioning. My second restart of resogun hang on blue or maybe black screen where the game logo show be showing. I closed the app using the home button to PS4 on main menu. This happened many times. And then it loaded after I opened up information on the game (using down button on the game in main menu) and the game after playing with those items. There was at least 1 other system hang while I was the system UI and I had to shut down and restar.

Has any of this happen to people here?
I am now thinking that if the under preforming PSN could be causing these issues?

PS.I am not able to reply back much atm as I am busy with something for a day or 2

This thread is breaking my heart. This shouldn't be happening.

I had HDMI issues right out the box. I got it working after a few minutes of troubleshooting and haven't had any problems since. Although, I'm pretty sure if I messed with the setup back there the problems will start again. I'm just going to leave it alone.

It happens with electronics. Doesn't matter if it's a smartphone, a grapicscard, a notebook, a console, etc. We had some bricked WiiU's, too.
You have to live with it. These kind of failures happen.

Guys, we need to get over this .4% number. This is a number Sony gave to talk about number of consoles REPORTED TO CUSTOMER SERVICE at the time they gave the comment. It is not a long term failure rate. It's not indicative of how widespread this issue could be.

You can process a return if you won't be playing much over the next few days but your issue sounds firmware related. 1.5 is obviously causing a lot of shit for a lot of people.

If your console light turns white (and don't stay at pulsating blue), it can be that HDMI cable or connection issue. Fix with a pin.

Wait, is the light not supposed to be white at all times? I've been playing for hours and hours yesterday and the light has been only white. Never blue, only orange when in standby.

I also have an optical audio cable plugged into the PS4 and into my DVI converter, which isn't turned on. I have an HDMI going straight from my PS4 to my TV.

My father got a defective unit from Amazon. I just spent an hour or so trying to fix it, but nothing seems to work. The odd thing is I actually got it to boot up properly and when I tried to install the update it just turned off and had a constant white pulsating light instead of blue. I let it sit for about 10 minutes, but it didn't appear to be doing anything.

I can try it out more later and yes could be due to firmware. It's got 1 year warranty anyway and Amazon return policy gives me some time to play with it some more I guess

I have seen white light during system freeze/game loading hangups...there shouldn't be Home connection issue on my setup as it works fine otherwise

So mine pulsed white during update but then it booted. I wonder if it does a PSN check or something during firmware installation (similar to how the iTunes updates query the Apple server for signature) and when PSN is down the thing just hangs. But, I doubt this is happening. It can be done entirely offline.

God, there are so many variables...

edit: But maybe it can't be done offline if you have a network cable plugged in?

updated fine, played fine

started to download resogun and blacklight, checked about an hour later system froze with psn down for maintenance on the main screen, system wouldnt respond to controller inputs or touching the power button

held the power button until system turned off

should it just turn back on when i try it again tomorrow?

Waited an hour and turned it back on, booted into safe made, it checked the hard drive then rebooted fine into regular mode and is working fine

now trying to download blacklight again, so far so good

Mine was manufactured in China in September. Working fine.

I've got to say, I was initially thinking these complaints of dead consoles were just the normal numbers you would expect. But after checking out that Amazon page, and seeing the number of verified purchasers in the 1 star reviews, I'm now convinced the failure rate is higher than it should be.

Just exactly how high is the big question, but for that many to be dead almost instantly, it certainly makes me wonder how many will be dead after the first month. Hopefully it was just some poor early manufacturing, or a particular batch or two, using a certain part type that varied slightly from others. Who knows.

Anyway, I'm sure Sony execs are sitting on pins and needles to see how this shakes out in the coming weeks.

I have a funny feeling that PSN maintainance is causing some of these... How? I dunno...

I though the same thing after seeing issues pop up on GAF. That's the reason why I opted to install via USB. I just didn't want to take the chance of bricking the console with a firmware update on servers that are being hammered.

Is anybody's PS4 getting to the safe mode screen then seeing flickering on the screen and then having the power just die?

This honestly looks like a manufacturing problem... maybe some components with really low quality were used? Or simply something went wrong, and the manufacturing process was going so rushed that nobody worried about the quality of the final product?

It would be great if we heard from someone who could enter safe mode after a BLoD :/ I still think this is maybe a software issue.

I'm wondering if the people who can't enter safemode can't because of a an HDMI issue. If the console can't detect that the HDMI port is active it may just power itself off. I guess a good test would be if someone with a working PS4 unplugs their HDMI and tries to enter safemode and see if their console actually stays on or powers off.

Follow up to this:

My controller headset jack goes too far in (i.e. doesn't work unless i pull the plug out slightly). Going to have to get a replacement. Hopefully I can get my replacement before I ship it out. Has anyone else had this problem? Everything else seems fine. The wobble is there but not really any sort of an issue.

The company I purchased my PS4 from is sending me a free controller totally comped. Needless to say I'm thrilled. Not going to say who to give certain folks the wrong ideas in their heads but man do I want to because that was some damn awesome customer service. I even explained how the controller works just fine except the headset jack itself.

People are selling this 1 month early in Dubai, but for around $850 for the US version. The price is ridiculous but even still, I couldn't imagine trying to handle an international return.

I'm going to wait 1 month until the official release date here when hopefully these errors and faults are sorted out.

I haven't filled out an Amazon review because mine is working fine. I'd definitely fill out an angry review to let off some steam if mine wasn't working though. That kind of throws off the numbers. Amazon must have shipped at least 100k.

I see it divides between hardware and software problems, where the software seems more widespread and variable. At this point there are many variables to say is this or that exactly, even poor packagin from the likes of amazon could be part of the equation.

Hmm... yeah I forgot, there seems to be some cases where updates have screwed the console. Weird.

So I just booted up some NFS and was playing it on my Vita... I noticed in the background in the desert area that there was a lot of graphical glitches, missing textures, flickering shadows, etc...

I uninstalled the game from the HDD and am reinstalling it now, but I'm worried it could be indicative of a failing GPU portion of the processor... Will report back in a bit to let you know if the issue is fixed. :(

You don't need to be empathetic towards me.

Yeah my light is always white and I played all yesterday. It starts off blue at start up.

Same here. White light at all times, unless it is booting (blue) or in standby (orange). For some reason I was expecting it to be blue at all times, but that could've just been lack of knowledge on my part. I haven't ran into a single issue with it yet, so I assume it's fine.

Exact same for me.

OK, that's weird. I woke up at 6AM, ready to call Sony, went downstairs, brought the system out of standby, popped in a disc one more time to try it... and it worked! I installed and started Need for Speed and Killzone without any problems. My drive isn't particularly noisy either - in fact, I could barely hear it from about 4 feet away.

So yay, I guess? I hope it's still working when I go back to play it later...

Someone needs to create a simple polling thread: "Is your PS4 working?"

I know some will use it to fan the fames, but as a recent purchaser of a functioning PS4 (sorry) - I know I'm not the only one with a healthy curiosity as to whether to recommend this system.

Congrats! Hopefully it continues working for you
