Haven't posted here for a long time, but I just wanted to share my experience, since my issue at first glance seemed similar to the one in this video.
My PS4 worked right out the box, but today I decided I'd like to hook it up to my somewhat pricey surround system. What I did was route the HDMI out from the PS4 to the HDMI in for my receiver, then route the HDMI out from my receiver to the HDMI in on the TV.
At first I had audio but no video, then I had video but no audio. And after about 30 seconds I had neither. I checked the HDMI ports (all fine), and no amount of reconfiguration fixed anything. Even more troublesome, the system wouldn't recognize my finger (meaning it wouldn't turn off or even beep).
Finally I pulled the plug, changed the wiring back to its original state (so the audio is coming from my TV) and plugged it back in. Surprise, everything works perfectly again.
I checked the instruction manual, which didn't mention anything about connecting to receivers, but it did mention something about a User's Guide on the software side,
so I checked that and found this .
If I'm reading it correctly, either my device isn't compatible (possible; it worked fine with everything else, but it is about 6 years old) OR they really want you to do audio out through the optical port on the PS4 itself.
Might be common knowledge to most folks, but yeah. If you tried hooking your PS4 up to a receiver and it stopped responding entirely, this post may help. I'm gonna order a SPDIF cable and try that next week.
