New Driveclub footage looks stunning

What's with people's 60fps frenzy lately? Am I the only one who doesn't really 'like' 60fps most of the time?

Call me crazy, but it often makes a game feel too 'gamey' and quick, not as natural or movie-feeling (I guess). For twitch multiplayer it makes more sense I suppose, but I actually don't get the big fuss about 60fps.

Is it because if 30fps ever dips it's highly noticeable, whereas 60fps dipping isn't something most would spot as easily? As long as it's hard locked to 30fps and never dips, I don't mind it.

for me the fps is a huge factor in racing games

first thing that comes to mind in these days is NFS Rivals / Forza Motorsport 5 and the same thing with Forza Horizon for last gen, the game was really good but the sense of speed it's just not there

this is obviously imho, Driveclub still looks amazing, but 60fps would be a pretty huge deal for me

I know. It looks like it's working. There is amazing anti aliasing in this footage, I can't see the aliasing at all. I should have phrases my post better since people probably misread it. I couldn't see any jaggies whatsoever.

What? There is clear and obvious aliasing in the file footage. Even the steam I can see it.

You've yet to see Project Cars. Wait till you see PS4 footy of that monster.

Anyway! DriveClub looks fun. To clarify; this is an arcade-racer, in the vein of say, SEGA Rally or NFS? Not a sim, like Forza/GT?

I believe so. It's a shame.

Project Cars' tracks are F1 racing tracks though, right? Not what I think of when I think of gorgeous racing game.

My consolation for missing the PS4 launch will be getting one together with inFamous:SS and DriveClub.

Am I the only one who thinks that DriveClub is the closest a racer has gotten to photo-realism so far?

Wow, I was honestly not expecting driveclub to look or play better (still to be seen) than forza but holy crap did that short clip look amazing. I might actually spring for the full version when it comes out instead of the PS plus one.

Why would you not expect it to look better? They've targeted 30fps and arcade racing.

Playing "better" would probably be subjective. I don't enjoy arcade racers like I do sims.

Thought there targetting 60 fps?

Design decision was 30fps at start, later they said they would try to get 60fps, so currently we don't know...
Just by looking at it I'd say 30fps but still looks amazing and it'd be even more amazing if it would be stable 60fps. But better lock at 30 than variable.

I'm with you on this one in terms of not understanding the "OMG THIS ISN'T 60FPS IT'S UNPLAYABLE GARBAGE RABBLE RABBLE RAAARRRRRR crowd."

Obviously I think 60FPS is silky smooth and very fluid, but I would happily play Driveclub at the framerate we see in the encoded videos or the GIFs - it's more than playable there and it looks gorgeous. The game doesn't move so fast that the fluidity of 60 is needed to properly gauge reaction times and play the game.

Something like Wipeout HD on the fastest settings, though, moves in a way that 60 is almost a necessity to see and analyze everything that's flying your way. The framerate on the Vita version (Wipeout 2048) makes it very hard to play at the higher end of the difficulty spectrum.

So... some games need 60fps if they're fast-moving games or require absolute precise timing, but for 90% of what I play, 30 is good!

Yes, good example. Wipeout is akin to a twitch online shooter in that respect, so I actually can see anything less than 60fps being a hindrance there.

I remember playing GT5 and admiring the smoothness of everything, but at the same time thinking 'wow this is very gamey looking'. Odd.

I'm glad they realize how important environmental artists are.

Have yet to see a track that I've found insultingly boring.

Yeah, for the style of game it's good/fine that they aim for 30fps. 60 would be great, but isn't necessary.

Also, this looks good...I question what racing games people saying "greatest looking racer ever" have played though. Looks good...on par with what I expect for this new-gen for an arcade racer. I don't find that particular track all that flattering...but that's due to the locale.

Imagine if Polyphony and Evolution got together to work on Gran Turismo 7.

PD works on car models, and Evolution works on the environments and lighting.

The first rule of Driveclub is you don't talk about frame rate. It is what it is, let the guys making the game decide. Too many cooks, a camel is a horse designed by a committee etc.

Also I don't think anyone has said or is saying that the game NEEDS TO HAVE 60 FPS OR WILL BE UNPLAYABLE. But honestly, it's 2013, and while the game looks great (now) it doesn't look like something that couldn't be running at 60fps. And for racers, 60 is HIGHLY preferred. I'm sorry but if you say you PREFER 30fps like that special comment in this thread that said "60fps feels too gamey" I simply do not believe you and believe you have an agenda.

Pgr was a fantastic game at 30. But there's no debate. It would've been even better at 60. It absolutely affects gameplay in racers.

Evo should have followed that rule. :) They were the ones who publicly said they were targeting 60… at least at some point in development. Maybe (probably) not anymore.

If the game looks like this and manages to hit 60? Holy crap, I might barf from the excitement.

As amazing as it will look, I just can't look forward to a sim racer at 30fps unless it's confirmed locked down unbelievably tight so that I can get used to it.

Do dynamic resolution to hold the framerate if need be.

LOL. Is that even possible?

News flash - It's not a sim racer. :)

Driveclub isn't a sim racer so you're all good.

Every notable racing or fighting game that I can think of is 60fps. Since Sega and Namco got it started in the Arcades, there was no going back.

I hate to say it, but to me its been one of the key differences between Tier-1 and Tier-2.

Not trying to knock Drive Club, as it looks amazing.

Are they even trying to be a sim racer? From the trailers I got more of a PGR/Forza Horizon vibe

Whaa...? So PGR, Motorstorm, NFS are all not notable? Anyway, I'm done getting involved in this debate.
