Turn 10: Nighttime racing & weather "isn't a minor thing" to add in Forza

Adding night and weather to an existing course "is not a minor thing, it is not a 'add a little bit of time, throw it in' thing," Greenawalt said. "When we do things, we do it all the way. That means physics, that means changing conditions, that means everything. So that is not the sort of thing that is easily undertaken in a patch.”

So, what about building a new course around rain and darkness? Greenawalt explains, “To build a new track that would work at night and in wet would mean a bespoke track. Everything we build is bespoke."

To start from the bottom up means at least another nine months of development -- that's just to get the course up and running, never mind modifying it with new water and car physics, and new lighting.

"If we wanted to make one of those tracks work with the added particles or projected shadows, and of course adding the physics to do something like night and wet, it means re-engaging those tracks. I’m not trying to give an excuse, I’m trying to give context as to why this is an order of magnitude higher than something like Drag and Tag, and other things we’re looking at from the community.”

He knows that both night racing and weather are staples of the genre. "It’s not where we chose to put our investment in Forza Motorsport 5. We chose to be 1080p and 60 frames per-second, and have that solid performance.”

No kidding. That's why it is cool in games that have it. It's not like I'm asking for a hello kitty livery.

Title is misleading, Dan is clearly referring to patching it into Forza 5.

I don't really know why you changed it instead of just pasting the IGN one...

Edit:

So it won't be in Forza 6. Thanks for the heads up.

This is why its misleading, because people take that from it, when its not at all what he says.

Which is why you should have already started ages ago instead of making new tracks from scratch that still weren't built for it.

I wonder if he thinks their game will be better than Driveclub in any significant way... Everything I've seen from Driveclub blows this game out of the water.

This is fucking embarrassing.

Welcome to the next generation of racing games, where its the same but worse but hey LOOKATHESEGRAFIX

From the IGN article:

It's why we may not get to for a while, if ever.
Just made it sound like it's probably too much work to really bother in the future. Mod can change the title if they want to...

DC is looking like the Forza Horizon sequel we all want.

While there at it, I hope T10 use all this time to work on their Nurburgring scan and get it right this time.

I know it's not what he actually said and I know the context in which he's saying it. I'm imputing it because this is their approach each game when this topic comes up. "Oh we wanted to concentrate on our core values of 1080p 60fps". Ok we get it it's not a priority for you and/or it's out of your engineering capability.

They don't care and will continue not to care.

Look how pretty the cars look in garage mode.

More tracks, nah Top Gear and pretty cars.

If they hadn't taken short cuts on the lighting engine then this wouldn't be a problem.

All real time lightning engines cheat though. You can't make a working lightning engine that is realistic and can do anything you tell it to.

At the end it comes down to how driving feels.
Since Evolution Studios consists of guys from StudioLiverpool(Wipeout), Bizarre Creations(Project Gotham Racing) and of course Evolution(Motorstorm) I think they're pretty competent when its comes to racing games, but you never know.

I don't really understand this, can someone explain? Why can't they just create a engine or whatever that lets them use any track with any time of day or a few weather options? Why wouldn't that be easier than using pre-baked lighting? Is the issue that they think it wouldn't look as good?

Personally I would give up some graphical fanciness if I could pick any track at any time of day with a choice of weather.

The BS monetization of Forza aside, the game drives very, very well.

FM4 is god-tier to me--huge selection of cars, PORSCHE, pretty good track list. I hope T10 can get back to that level with FM6 or 7.

Depending on how they receive funding, the current talent that they have hired, and the quotas that are asked of them. Almost all of their resources are tied down in pumping out that next title to see a turn of profit.

Creating an engine isn't easy. Though it may indeed make other things easier in the long run. It comes down to the resources that are on hand, and how forward thinking those their publisher (Microsoft) is in terms of the series.

If they think they can market it with other selling points, and used baked and canned graphics effects to sell the game. Then they will probably justify that is their production objective.

Lazy devs,

Gt6, on 7-8yr old hardware knocking out 1440x1080 @ near 60fps with dynamic weather, dynamic lighting and day/night cycles.
