I like it, I would just remove Shulk and Impa.

Also would add Waluigi somewhere, instead of Takamaru?

I call them Wonderful Ones because I'm not sure how they would be implemented. I doubt it would actually be all 100/101 Wonderful Ones (there's another problem; would they be called "The Wonderful 100" or "The Wonderful 101?"), probably just the main Wonderful Ones (Wonder-Red, Wonder-Blue, Wonder-Green, Wonder-Pink, Wonder-Yellow, Wonder-White, and Wonder-Black) or less. It could even be Wonder-Red by himself, who is a Wonderful One. So I figure "Wonderful Ones" is the safer term for now.

Also, I'm a big Waluigi supporter too, and I would have had a spot for Waluigi or Paper Mario if Rosalina & Luma hadn't been announced.

This probably has been discussed to death a thousand times already, but today a switch goes on in my head and it was clear to me that Impa is probably the most obvious addition if there is one in the Zelda team roster.

People complained a little about Zelda not being the SS design, imo it makes sense because she is far from being a fighter in SS. She is not even a princess.
In Brawl they used the TP design where she had some moments near the end where she is fighting, and her design was still matching with a Sheik one from OoT. We are used to see her like that in Smash now and the assets are done so... makes sense even if Sheik is out.

But Impa, Impa is the most recurring character in Zelda's history after the three Triforce holders. She's here since the first NES game, at least in the booklet. She's a girl and iirc Sakurai wants more girls, and she is more badass than ever in SS. A perfect addition, I can see as an unlockable one.

Who the fuck is Takamaru?

Star of Mystery at Murasame Castle/Nazo no Murasame-jo. It's one of Miyamoto's earliest babies that didn't gain traction but has a fuckload of fan support from the east and recently the west. This is because of Sakurai's previous desire to get him into a Smash game and Kamiya namedropping him as a character (and franchise) he'd love to do something with. It's also called a "sister" game to The Legend of Zelda for playing with a lot of similar game design that would influence LoZ later on.

TL;DR: He's the "new old" hype. And a samurai.

Edit: It's funny, I didn't really care much for Shiek but all these mentions of Impa have me so interested in the idea of her being playable. I blame her bitchin' hairdo/outfit in Skyward Sword. :lol

Who the fuck is Takamaru?
A samurai that was the protagonist of a NES game that only got released in Japan. He had his own minigame in Nintendoland and was playable in Samurai Warriors 3 both of which have been pretty recent which is why people think he may be a revivedcharacter from the past.

Takamaru would easily make for the most obscure character in the series should he appear. Not saying he wouldn't happen considering we got Marth and Roy in Melee, but he IS pretty unknown so I guess he'd perhaps be kept as a secret character should he be in the game at all.

In the US, yeah. Though in Japan it would probably be Ice Climbers because Takamaru still gets cameos occasionally. But with Nintendoland and a VC import they could introduce him to the west effectively.

One of my favorite bits of "I wish this would happen" is a double sided trailer wherein Takamaru and Mike Jones play up a rivalry for the title of "most obscure Nintendo character overall" given their standing as two of the most obscure characters on either side of the pond from the Nintendo Vault™.

I’m not trying to “convert” anyone, but objectively, Takamaru is a sensible retro character addition.

In 1986, Nintendo released four major titles for the new Famicom Disk System peripheral: The Legend of Zelda, The Mysterious Murasame Castle, Metroid, and Kid Icarus. The Nintendo EAD department’s main title was The Legend of Zelda, and Nintendo R&D1’s main project was Metroid. Murasame Castle was built using the Zelda engine, and Kid Icarus was based off of the Metroid engine.

Just looking at Murasame Castle next to Zelda, the similarities are immediately apparent.

CpG2mX1.jpg

The game was also scored by Koji Kondo, who did the music for The Legend of Zelda.

Nintendo of America figured Westerners wouldn’t be interested in a game based on feudal Japan so it never saw release outside of Japan. Had it been localized in 1986, there’s no doubt in my mind that the game would be regarded as a classic and that a ton of people would want Takamaru in Smash Bros.

People who aren’t familiar with the game deride Takamaru for being “just another swordsman,” but that isn’t the case. Not only are there no samurai-style characters in Smash Bros., but Takamaru uses shuriken, he throws fireballs, he can turn invisible, and he can even summon lightning.

Also, a fun fact: The Mysterious Murasame Castle was adapted into a live action TV drama in 1986.

I honestly wouldn't call either of those most obscure Nintendo character.

Take for example the mascot of the GameBoy Camera:

Or there was that bloke from the Virtual Boy game Teleroboxer, that appeared in that GFAQs rumour, that nobody in this thread had heard of.

Was talking about just characters playable in Smash should he appear, not overall in Nintendo's history or anything.

Ice Climbers? ROB? Mr Game & Watch?

I wonder if Takamaru would just look like the original art or if they would update his appearance.

If they did, I hope they'd take more inspiration from the Captain Rainbow look than anything else. I like the "toonish" or more animation inspired look he has going on in that combined with the little bits of promo/box art Ryce posted above way more than the overly real look he got for Samurai Warriors 3.

That was more of a remark towards Azure J's post

Ah gotcha. Hmm, what would be a better way of phrasing that then?

Don't forget what Sakurai said about Takamaru during Melee development, but he probably would forget what he said long time ago. He said that if Takamaru got other games then he would consider him to be in Smash. After Brawl got released, he got three different games; Captain Rainbow, NintendoLand and Samurai Warrior 3.

Played brawl? Nintendoland?

Why Brawl? He only got very small sticker.

You should use the corrected version Ryce made:

Those characters all had international appearances despite being decades old, Takamaru is similar except that he had far less exposure due to being from a Japan only NES game.

As noted above, Takamaru had his own game in Nintendoland and was in Samurai Warriors. Also, he has had a following in Japan for years. Compare that to ice climbers, who have had one non-smash game ever, almost 30 years ago.

I'd love to see Takamaru in Smash Bros. I'm not much a fan of his look in Samurai Warriors, though. I'd love for him to look exactly like his original art.

I never played the game, but I imagine they would be tiny people with special moves based on four of the unite morphs:
I think this would make them way more visually interesting than having a few of them alone. Final smash would have all 100 (101?) of them appear.

His list didn't have Mike Jones, otherwise both Waluigi and Takamaru can stay.

Are you talking about this quote?
I think that could be interpreted in a number of ways. I would say that characters like Little Mac and Pac-Man could kind of be considered "retro" in a way, too, despite appearing in new games.

There is no "interpretation" about that statement. They set up the context right there to refer to dead franchises such as Kid Icarus. All of the characters he mentioned to Sakurai are dead. Though I found it funny the dude in the interview expected Sakurai to know who the hell Mike Jones/Star Tropics even was.

Hate the shit out of the "interpretation" song and dance.

Well you need to get on that!

If they're included at all, it'll probably just be Wonder Red who uses the different forms when he attacks. I'd like to have them be similar to Pokémon Trainer and shift between the different Wonderful Ones, but that probably won't happen.
I'll just be happy for anything really...

Sukapon is my favorite character that nobody heard, since it was from Joy Mech Fight, Nintendo's first 1x1 fighting game

But if you are going by that route they will probably make the Urban Champion dude playable, since they love that damn game (club nintendo rewards, 3d classic, every virtual console on earth)

There's a specific reason for the names.
The Wonderful 101's name reflects the fact that Luka, who becomes Wonder Goggles by the end of the game, officially joined the SENTINELS program. His power is essentially a constant Optic Blast on steroids.

Though, in all honesty, I'm hoping for The Wonderful 100/101 more than I'm hoping for Ridley. If you could make me a roster with just Impa, no Dixie or King K. Rool, Ridley, or Snake (as well as "Chrom or Robin, & both Shulk & the Wonderful Ones), that'd be appreciated.

Oh, and... great post. : )

Takamaru is a character that can be really interesting if in Smash Bros. He just makes sense to me, and has a lot to go with for a moveset.

I don't think it'll happen, though...

I think Takamaru would be the safest and blandest retro rep that they could go with.

I'm hoping the go for something different, like Duck Hunt Dog or Sheriff.

If we get a retro character (I don't consider Little Mac to be one) then Takamaru is probably the most likely candidate.

Same here since Little Mac just had a new game during Wii Era.

I would love to have Takamaru as playable character, but I would love to see Duck Hunt Dog at same time. I want to remind everyone that Sakurai said old characters. It's possible that we might get more than one retro character this time.

That was Pit last time, and he got in.

Wait what? Why is Pit blandest Retro?

@Mista Koo: You're a good man.
I still like Impa though.
I also like Anna way more than Robin as a new FE rep. It might partially be because I'm thinking of her playing like a Smash Bros version of Johnny from Guilty Gear and utilizing jokes about her inventory along with her ability to use anything as a basis for combat. It would also be nice to have another evergreen or "perma cast" member for FE and further nice to have another female in the roster. I'm just stuck in my ways now though.

That was Pit last time, and he got in.

He also turned out to have the most fun new play style of the newcomers sooooo... ;)

TBH, I'm just biased because Smash has fencers, "pixies on speed", "knights", "knife wielders" and brute styled swords people covered but we have no quick drawing/Iaijutsu styled swordsman/woman in the roster. It still burns that Lyn was just an assist trophy in Brawl. I could have had Marth and Lyn complimenting one another too. :(

I think duck hunt dog would be a silly and boring character that wouldn't be used much just more of a novelty, imo. Sheriff might be interesting but I think character wise Takamaru is a very diverse and interesting character who would also be fun to play as which would be the most important in choosing a character.
