Seems like a plausible rumor. Do you have a link to wherever it originally came from? I'd be curious to know, since it must have been recent to not be totally deconfirmed on the aspect of Diddy being the next veteran.
I'd be pretty surprised if Diddy and Dixie worked together as one character and we got K. Rool, though. That is a lot of Donkey Kong series stuff.
My favorite part of the update is Sakurai's nonchalant addition: "FYI, she's an Assist Trophy."

Seems plausible. And more importantly to me, no playable characters were cut during the transition. Would accept.

I'm pleased Ashley is an Assist Trophy. Maybe next time she can be a playable Warioware rep. (not that I want to actually wait that long lol)

I'd be happy with it if Pac-Man wasn't in it. Can't say the same about King K. Rool, but he's not on my list. (Still don't think Ridley will be a playable character either.)
Replace those two and with 9-Volt, Advance Wars, or Pushmo.
Ganon should get Wind Waker moveset (with dual swords, maybe). No tripping whatsoever except for Diddy Bananas.
Bring back directional air dodging, L-Cancelling, and hitstun and after all that I'll be content with the game.
Smashboards is full of trolls like Mango. No Leaks.

Hope it's true. Brawl had a legit leak MONTHS before it's release (which I believe confirmed ROB and Wolf?), and of course with Smash 4 we have a GAFer who "guessed" Wii Fit Trainer and Villager a few days before E3. So who knows.

Oh wow. That guy's backstory is really stretching it. But then I remember that GameFAQs leaker. Tropical Freeze's JPN release date is February 13. I'll wait and see.

Yeah, whatever the character would end up being, Unite Morphs have got to be a part of it. But it really CAN be interpreted a number of ways.
For one, having been translated from Japanese, and because Japanese lacks plurals...we don't know if he meant "characters" or "character." And "trying my best" doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to happen. It could even mean that he's throwing around ideas to see what works.
Also, while the question specified forgotten franchises, Sakurai's reply only mentioned "old characters." He wasn't specific, and while it's likely he's referring to characters from forgotten franchises as mention in the question, there's no way to be sure. We really have no idea what characters Sakurai is referring to, and depending on the character he may have a different view on them. For example, Pac-Man is definitely still around and not an ignored franchise...but where's the interest in newer Pac-Man games? Pac-Man is a character that is stuck in his arcade days, and most people would consider him a "retro" character. That's just one example.
Anyway, the point is, quotes like that are very much open to interpretation. Sakurai wasn't really that specific with anything in that instance.
Are you talking to me? I might be able to make that roster for you, but I'd have to remake a few things again since I didn't bother to keep all of the source files and such... I flatten everything once I put it in the roster, and I just keep two main layers to work with. I have a really over complicated way of making the character boxes and text, too (I made my roster in Numbers originally, and then I added images to it in GIMP, so I have to bounce between the two applications, taking screenshots in Numbers and modifying things in GIMP), lol. But let me know exactly which characters you want in the roster (including veterans) and I'll see what I can do. I dunno if I want to make this a regular thing though because it can become quite time consuming. I have no problem with people cutting up the boxes on my roster and rearranging them for their own use, though.

This is what I'm doing. It sounds somewhat outlandish right now, but would be amazing if it was true.
Looking towards leaks isn't that bad. Dude on Gamefaqs or Smashboards leaked the entire BRawl roster a months before release, including ROB which made a lot of people feel the list was fake (but also it was very generic). Serebiijoe also told some of his mods ahead of time that Lucario was in Brawl...though don't ask me how I know that. Point is, leaks in the video game industry are very real. This doesn't mean to blindly accept all of them obviously, just keep an eye out for them.

Wary of this, not because of the jokey nature of the supposed leaker that others have highlight already, but I don't trust anyone who on top of knowing the game's secrets, actually knows what went on behind the scenes. "Character X and Y were considered but are not in; this one is in but is still being worked on". Anyone that was truly in a position to know how the planning went would be under the tightest of NDAs. For contrast, the fella who legitimately knew some stuff about Brawl pre-release (who confirmed Wolf, the Dragoon and other things) left things simple and to the point.
Oh, Ashley's confirmation is pretty sweet. Should Kat & Ana return that's 2 Warioware ATs, I hope Land doesn't get criminally neglected like it was in Brawl.

I swear I remember one of Brawl's few legit leakers was some guy obsessed with Peach's ass on smashboards, but he did get Toon Link/Ness/Olimar & Pikmin months before they were shown off, with the right naming convention and everything.
Unless he was just going off somebody else's leaks, sometimes they can act like (intentional?) idiots and throw people off.

There was also the user called Jonk who talked to NoA about EarthBound not coming but found out about Mother 3 content. Ness hadn't been revealed yet.(?)
Then Megaman discussion got banned from the Dojo thread. For some reason I think sp0rsk had a verified source because he was so sure about it. "Megaman isn't in it so shut up something something"

From an interview with Sakurai in Nintendo Power, Vol. 228:
NP: "There was a rumor at one point about Ridley being playable. Was that ever a consideration?"
Sakurai: "I think that would probably be pretty impossible. [Laughs] If we had to put our best efforts into it, we may have been able to do it. But he might have been a little slow. Would that be all right? [Laughs]"
So yeah, given Sakurai's comments, perhaps Ridley would be a major feat for the dev team.

King K. Rool is one of my most wanted characters. All of the things in that rumor are pretty safe guesses, but they'd all be things I'd gladly accept.
So you say this "leak" was from a while ago but then that means the bit about Diddy being the next vet revealed has to be off because Zelda and King Dedede were revealed recently. When it comes to "leaks" either its all true or none of it is true. Any parts that maybe correct were just due to lucky circumstance or logical guesses (a popular character from a prominent franchise got an AT, WHAT A SURPRISE).
Little Mac, Mii and Pac-Man I'm willing to buy because not only are those choices less safe, they were accompaigned with picks that were even MORE unsafe. You can't guess Wii Fit Trainer!

One has to wonder, if Mario Tennis 64 (2000) never came out and thus the creation of a doubles partner for Wario, Waluigi, was never needed, would Jimmy T have become his partner in Power Tennis (2004) which came out after the first Wario Ware (2003).
Wario Ware seems to have been kept at a distance from the Mario spinoffs. There was the Diamond City track in Mario Kart GP (arcade), but that's like a weird rejected cousin of Mario spinoffs, and Power Tennis did give him a factory which is kind of a reference to Wario Ware (even though all Wario graphics were of his overalls form). Maybe there are others, I don't play that many Mario spinoff titles.

I think originally Camelot said they were plannign on making a 'Wapeach' character rather than Waluigi, so if MT64 never happened I'm leaning more towards Mona being his doubles partner. Then we'd have her little scooter in Mario Kart eventually as well. This alternate reality of Mario spin-offs with mona i just made up would also have Banjo-Kazooie and Conker as playable characters in those games because i don't know
Thinking about it, before the Rare buyout, besides Smash (where according to Scribes EAD did approach them for content in Melee/SBB64) Nintendo always shied away from using anything DKC related in Mario cameo games beyond the DKC DK and generic jungle environments. Then once they're out of the picture, suddenly your average Mario sports game is half DKC stuff while they still act like Wario doesn't exist outside of the Mario franchise and Yoshi's Story is Yoshi's only ever game

I would not mind that "leak" being real (as much as I don't like K.Rool being in smash. Having Chrom not replace Ike makes it sound really odd, though. And the Diddy+Dixie combo feels extrange. But it has Ridley on my 3DS so I gess I can wish even if its absolutely hopeless, baseless fanfiction.

Ike has been in three Fire Emblem games. Chrom isn't replacing fuck all, I'll tell you whut. And hopefully my main man King K. Rool makes the cut too, although I'm not optimistic due to his absence from Tropical Freeze.
I looked up and down that post and didn't see a link. Only when I checked every recent post you made (per your comment) did I see it. You may want to update that original post with said link. That being said, I have no reason to believe it is any more true than any other rumor. I'm going to need to see something unguessable or something more concrete than words for me to buy into anything at this point. Also, King KRool sucks

Wario ware games don't have much in story so no character is really more impoartant than the others , they just kinda sell you the characters and their charm. Her charm is that she is soceopathic wich , she cast spells and and create things in a witch like manner .
Who do you think you're talking to? I'm Sakurai's favorite assist trophy. I'm not going anywhere.

Despite not having much instory, what story they do provide and the manner they present the characters is some of the best character design in nintendo, period. There are more "anime' charcters like Ashly and Cricket, and then you have more mario or crazy characters like Dr .Crygor or Jimmy T. And sometimes really weird ones like Drool and Spitz.
Also the games are good so there is that.
