The biggest irony is some of Microsofts (First and third party) biggest franchises have been 60FPS while most of Sonys best loved games (Bar GT) have struggled to Mantain a locked 30FPS.

Which franchises are these?

Xbox 360
First-party: Forza Motorsport
Third-party: COD

I'm struggling to think of another MS first-party game that's 60fps.

I feel like this thread is the center of the internet today.

For us it absolutely is. I've read every page and I'm not even sure why. But if I were to post this to my Facebook nobody would even notice it. I found that out when Cliff left Epic. Sometimes it's jarring going between GAF and the real world. Like I hit some sort of dimensional warp.

Can't stress this enough. The double standard is staggering.
Point it out. Quote those posters.

If all that's going to be are accusations that a certain group of people are being disingenuous using no evidence at all then I think you're the bad poster.

I've added something extra to the article.
AMENDMENT (24/01): There appears to be a little bit of confusion of the framerates reported, and the fault is our own and our poor wording. We inaccurately used the term “average” when the math, in reality, does not add up. Logistically saying the average is ~30fps implies it exceeds and dips below 30fps, averaging at the number. That is not the case. What our sources have reported is that the listed FPS are roughly the most common targets during performance. So while the Xbox One version can reach ~45fps, for a majority of play it will sit around the ~30fps market, give a few frames. Same goes for the PlayStation 4 build, which in most cases hits around 60fps, take a few frames. Our sources have not confirmed exactly, but our own extrapolation of the information suggests you might say the average (accurate use of the term) Xbox One performance could be ~35fps, meanwhile the average PlayStation 4 performance may be ~55fps. Actual, concrete performance benchmarks will need to wait until the game is out for everyone, as we certainly don’t have them.

We apologise for any confusion from misuse of the term “average”, and hope this amendment better clarifies performance on both systems.

I feel like we are getting to a stage where mods need to come in and set some rules for PC dick waving during these console comparison threads.

Its bad enough PC only crowd gets a free pass to port beg and shit up threads that way.

Isn't this entire thread PS4 dick waving anyway?

As a loyal Xbox fan I'm really pissed about this. It's one thing to have resolution discrepancies between ps4 and xbox. In most cases, I can't tell the difference so it didn't bother me. But frame rate is a big freakin deal to me. Why couldn't the developers cut down in textures or something on the xbox version so we can get 60 FPS? I'm starting to regret my decesion on sticking with the Xbox. Microsoft better start releasing some fixes to their dev tools if that's what is causing the issue.

See, this is the attitude! As a PC/PS4 only gamer, I'm angry enough at MS as it is. But if I was an XB1 only owner I'd be fuming.

With that said, sorry to say that the bolded is not the issue I'm afraid.

Gotta say I love these threads, so much drama. I'm sitting in a Microsoft Virtual Academy session discussing app performance and this made me chuckle a bit given the situation:

As am I; it is definitely disappointing. My hope is that a strong dev w/ experience w/ the system can squeeze more performance out of it, but I am not super knowledgable when it comes to the innards of the One.

Well, it could be because...

It's not the dev tools, it's the hardware. Over time they could release some better tools to optimize but you are going to be hearing about these discrepancies all generation. And most devs will choose to resolution over framerate so we could see many more examples of the XB1 version running at half the speed of PS4.

If MS can optimize how it handles its OS, you might be able to get a few extra frames per second, but I don't think it'll ever attain parity unless it was engineered to be equal on both platform (i.e. capping the PS4 to match the X1).

The truth is that every console player really wants to play every game in 1080p and 60 fps...(in my opinion)

However, we have had to balance that desire with wanting to use a controller in the living room on a low cost box that sits under the TV.

We want to play with friends and competitive multiplayer against others using the same specs and control method otherwise its unbalanced.

Now we are starting to get to that critical point.

It feels good, we don't need to use our old excuses.

We can have it all.

60 page thread over this? I honestly can't even tell the difference between 30 & 60fps. I was planning on getting the PS4 anyways, but once I can buy it for around $35 since I already beat and found all the collectibles on the 360 version.

Why are people even bringing the PC into this?

The comparison is between two consoles launched side by side and one is clearly inferior, so much so that the PS4 really is the only console worth owning for the best multiplatform ports.

you can stress it more by using multiple square-bracket B tags..

I'm not sure what the maximum numbers of bold tags that are allow is. So experiment until you reach an acceptable level of stressing. You may also use underlining and possibly italicizing to add even more stress.

We already had the WiiU port begging, so let's mark that off.

This game is a joke sorry but the only console it should of came out on was the Wii U. With it coming out on the Xbox One and PS4 its almost like a slap in the face of the consumer laughing at them saying " HA HA HA what a dumbass you are, your new console is not backwards compatible and we will take advantage of it". If you are wondering why I said Wii U at the beginning well it never came out for a nintendo console so I would not mind it, but as it stands right now its the laziest thing I have ever seen. A port of a game from last year on the same user bases of xbox and PlayStation. If anything this game is the poster child for why backward compatibility should be standard. As for the frame rate who gives a shit, if you are dumb enough to get this game for the PS4/ XBONE and not the 360 or ps3 then you are already stupid. Sorry but wasn't that the game they said was a failure and thier charging full price for this port? How much is the one from last year cost, what its cheap? I am not saying tomb raider is a bad game. But if any of you support the next gen version I must say that is really sad, I know there is nothing to play but do not buy this game. Its odd the one thing that would be nice on PS4 and xbone is some that the WII U has in full force. I really wish they were backward compatible.

50 page thread? 50 page thread.

And then some...

When I first opened this thread this morning, I left it open in a tab and came back a few minutes later. I decided to see how long it was so I clicked "last." Which took me to page 54. Now it's up to 57 pages.

I'd wager some of those same people will say "30 FPS is fine for a game like this though".

And people will be like "that isn't the point".

So has this basically been a summary of the thread so far? I doubt I'll be able to read it all. Count me among the people that think 30 would be fine for a game like this. But I also think 60 feels amazing when doable.

Or better yet, give the console versions some options. See, if they did what you suggested, you'd probably have people thinking "30 FPS is fine for me, why couldn't they increase the grahics\effects and keep it at 30?"

I think the solution would be to give the game a 30 FPS \ 60 FPS option. 30 FPS would be prettier and 60 FPS would reduce some graphics settings to achieve it. *shrug*

Yup. Also remember while MS is busy optimizing the tools for XB1 it's not like Sony isn't improving their tools as well. The gulf will always be there.

Because we representatives of the PC world, superior to all other forms of gaming, have to remind you of your weakness.

Not too long ago people from your pitiful Sony clan were hiding behind these childish notions that frames per second do not matter. Now, suddenly after this weak machine you call "console" has managed to outperform another piece of ancient technology, you have foolishly taken out your war drums.

What you fail to understand is that PC gaming imposes order and innovation on the chaos of gaming development. Games such as Witcher 2 exist because we allow it, and they will be obsolete after one blink of an eye...because we demand it.

End of transmission...

This is a joke post, right? Because if not, WTF.

The same reason the Wii U was brought in. This is a gaming discussion.

That sounds better as a xbox owner. I would still prefer the option of lower resolution for higher fps, but atleast its over 30.

If this is really true, then I'm going to just build a PC and keep my xbox for exclusives only. This is just BS to me. I can't believe a last gen game cannot even get 60 FPS on a new gen console. I am really hoping MS can resolve this some how but in losing faith day by day. One of the main reasons I stuck with xbox is because of the ecosystem and my many friends who are on live but I will not stand for this shit much longer.

This is why it's silly to stick with one console/company. It's been an eye opener for me trying to convince my friends to get the ps4 when most of us game on the 360. Didn't think it would be so difficult when most of the games we play are multi-platform.

This TR news really has me more annoyed at some of these other multiplatform games on next gen. For example, Need for Speed: Rivals. Runs at 1080p 30fps on both consoles, with a few extra effects on PS4. It really makes me wonder why some devs aren't pushing the PS4 version higher.

Hahaha these last pages are great "hey guys it's ok for us PS4 fans to shit on PC gamers and X1 owners but don't dare to retort though!"

Not really.

Most console peeps don't give two shits about PCs. It's PC people that come into threads about Tomb Raider wanting to tell all the console pleebs the "Definitive Edition" isn't really definitive because they played the game on their amazing PC at 60fps.

Of course when the facts come out, and the PS4 version actually runs at 60 as well, then some people take that opportunity to fire back.

But it all begins with the PC defense force. Not the other way around.

i dont find that to be the case at all...the "PC elite" muck up the arguments with the "like omg i could play this game on 2 year old hardware!!" crap...

EVERYONE knows that a high end PC is going to outperform the PS4 and the Xbone...it serves no purpose whatsoever for someone to come in talking about how a $1000+ PC build can outperform a $400 console...

This makes me really happy. Why? Because it seems the Xbox One is there to help enable the multiplat games to have a higher framerate on the PS4. If that fails, I go to my PC and make it happen myself, even if I have to lower other settings. Couldn't ask for a better situation, thanks Microsoft!

32 rendering processors vs 16 rendering processors here. Same info flowing around but the PS4 can render twice as much, aka 60 FPS for the same data vs 30. Could be that simple

The first post to even mention PC:

Closed box. PC types dismiss it all the time, but Timothy Lottes says it offers huge performance advantages.

So yeah, maybe stop shitting up threads doing backseat modding?

The thread is

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition - PlayStation 4 = ~60fps, Xbox One = ~30fps

No ?

Yes, but TR came on other platforms except one. I saw this as the main discussion is about PS4 and XB1, but because TR is on PC, 360 and PS3 we can compare them. The reason the Wii U is being discussed is because it has been left out.
