Microsoft: Killer Instinct to continue; will announce "new development partner" soon

Update: In a statement, a Microsoft spokesperson told Polygon that it will be working with a "new development partner" on Killer Instinct for Xbox One.

"We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Double Helix and wish them success in their next endeavor. We want all of our loyal fans to know that the Killer Instinct team at Microsoft is not changing and that the franchise will remain with Microsoft Studios. We remain dedicated to delivering a great experience and plan to announce our new development partner soon. We're excited about the future of this popular franchise."

Will DH still do DLC for a while, or are they going to immediately stop working on the game?

If they don't hire on some existing Double Helix employees and do it in house, then it's going to probably be someone like Saber Interactive or Certain Affinity.

I assume if it was under contract they would at least finish what they had so they get paid from Microsoft then send all assets to the new dev team.

One of the things I liked about DH is that they went from nobody to an actual, legible fighting game developer with enough talent to work around a few things to make their own fighting game if they wanted to. Not to mention the vast amount of love and respect they had for KI and Rare Ltd. in general.

I feel that it won't be the same. Once again, KI's stripped of people who /knows/ KI. And that's a damn shame.

Well, I guess this means whatever deals Double Helix had going on with third parties are going to evaporate.

Then again maybe that's the thing: third parties as in those no affiliated with platform holders will be OK, but not platform holders themselves. At any rate I just want to see STrider completed if it's going to be awesome.

Funny that this is the second time a studio they re working with, gets bought. At least this time they do wn the ip.
Guess they have learned cuz they already bought quantum and state of decay ips.

this is very interesting but it's also nerve wrecking if it goes to the wrong people

who would be an excellent studio for MS to give KI too

Quantum Break declared a proof of concept; Remedy put on Killer Instinct patch duty.

Bahaha, that made me crack a wide smile.

I hope whatever happens, a portion of the real talent (regarding game play balance, music, and graphics) remains with MS. I haven't played KI yet but I do plan on dipping into if the main pack ever gets a price drop.

Can you name a /good/, western developer with knowledge on how to make a fighting game?

Note: NetherRealm is owned by Warner Bros. Interactive. Who does this leave?

No one. Either Mike and the rest of the KI team will leave DH and continue the grind on KI (which is not unlikely), or....yeah Spark Unlimited.

It is odd how vocal Spencer is about Killer Instinct, though.

This is not good.

What's Netherrealm working on right now? Maybr they can pick up the pace fairly quickly?

Edit: didn't know WB owned Netherrealm.

Not, not, not good. Maybe Capcom?

No clue all i know is Helix recruited talented developers who workeds on fighting games before....not sure if that can happen again

I haven't played it yet, and probably won't for a long while, but KI is the one game that I was exciting about playing when I finally bothered to get an Xbox One.

I'm pretty scarred about this news.

The new developers even if they know how to make a fighting game, might have a vastly different vision then DH, when it comes to balance and system mechanics. Even just small tweaks could completely ruin the game.

I wonder if KI has been a success or not for MS. It clearly wasn't a critical success even with its very vocal fanbase, but maybe its a financial one.

They are currently making MK10, well some kind of MK game at least.
