Halo 5 sales in the UK [Excludes digital sales]

LOL! What's funny is that your friends habits for buying games shouldn't change much no matter the title, so the attach rate of digital for Halo will be the same as the other AAA titles.

Ill give you a LOL right back there dude.

You don't think that me and my friends who bought an Xbox One will have different purchasing intentions with certain games LOL? Halo is the kind of game for a lot of people that they will never trade in, can you say the same about Assassins Creed or Tomb Raider or Batman etc?

You have got to remember that all sales done that way are literally 1 sale per 2 people though. So even though your catering for a large amount of people, the digital/physical split is shafted because of it.

I'd also argue that most people who know about this also know about buying from foreign stores in the UK.

Global warming also plays a role I'm guessing.

I would say the main issues the game faces would be as follows.

1.) Obviously the position of the Xbox One lowers the amount of sales it can possibly have, so that's an initial headwind.

2.) However, I think the bigger issue is how much the market has changed since 2012. First party games in general are way less relevant as third parties have taken over through economies of scale. In the same ~1 month period, each of the three biggest third party publishers is releasing a major competitive online FPS with astronomical sales expectations. Black Ops 3 is 20+ million, Battlefront is 13+ million, and Rainbow Six is 7+ million, and they all have development, outreach, and promotional investment to match. To note, by development, I don't necessarily mean cost (though that can certainly apply), but also staff who have a good feel for openings and trends the market. I'd view Rainbow Six as the shakiest of those, but they are trying to find an opening in the market by releasing a Counter-Strike like game on consoles.

3.) Halo hasn't been seen as a seminal franchise for a while. Halo 5's reception seems better than Halo 4's, but since it's not seen as the game from which other shooters derive, it's harder to generate an astronomically high attach rate result like Halo traditionally has. Instead, it's now simply another high quality shooter you can buy from all the other good options this Fall.

People are underestimating digital sales, with game sharing a lot of people are buying games digitally as you can share the cost this way

if anything some are overestimating the digital sales. i am sure the majority agree that at the high end the digital sales are 25 to 30 % but some here seem to be delusional in thinking that it sold 50-100% digital just because they and some of their friends bought it digitally!!

I'm a UK person and I know absolutely no one who is remotely interested in Halo 5, I certainly wasn't after H4 and the MCC both sucked.

Personally I loved the campaign, so I hope it does well eventually, but I understand Halo isn't what it used to be, so these numbers are sort of expected.

The glee in this thread over poor sales is a tad disturbing though.

Buying from foreign stores is definetly big

I'd like a study on this from somewhere. There are so many things that you'd think people would just do because it's better, but then the knowledge isn't always out there. I have blown some peoples minds when I tell them recently.

All right, digital examples.

Witcher 3: 25% of total sales http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1116442 (Keep in mind this is a major PC franchise)
Ubisoft in 2014 on PS4/XB1: 10% http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=852745
EA in 2014 on PS4/XB1: 10-15% http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=860335
EA 2015 with Battlefield Hardline PS4/XB1 (similar game to Halo): 20% http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1041340

I've talked to people in the industry who have said week one can be a bit higher (30% being quite generous, as that's usually only a day 1 type of figure), but not much higher.

Lets add up the friend list numbers for digital.

So, so far:

We're at 44% digital.

We all know financial reports are just PR talk. We do the math to reveal the true split.

Lol, and you're hardcore gamers, plus you do some sort of account sharing thing that most people haven't heard of let alone do. Even with your own irrelevant anecdotal evidence it's still not more than retail as you mentioned earlier.

According to a report by World Panel last year, in the UK, 72% of console gamers exclusively buy retail only, whilst 10% buy Digital only, and the remaining 18% choose between either or. Another report in Germany had digital sales accounting for only 9% of console game sales.

MVC | Retail vs Digital in the UK

More than most countries, digital just doesn't make as much sense here in the UK. Retail/etail prices are usually cheaper than digital with more deals too (I paid £35 for it, whilst it is £45 digital), and there is a very big resale and trade in culture in the UK as well (CeX, GAME etc).

Don't get me wrong, Halo 5 could have sold more digital than is typical, but I think you're grossly overstating it's share.

I'd seriously state that a release week would have a larger digital split due to pre-loading, where's deals/sales and declining price pull more people towards the stores later in the games life.

I think 15-25% is the right ballpark.

1- Do you think MCC is responsible for people not buying up front the latest Halo game ?

2- If the sales are not good and the franchise is indeed delining, will this make an eventual PC port come sooner ?

I think overall that Destiny attracted a good chunk of the FPS gamers, the competition is really tough now in this market.

I don't care if it sold well. The game is some of the best multiplayer I have ever played and match making is very fast. I have not been sleeping well since its launch. Many people probably held off to see how everything goes because of the MCC. Well I can tell you that it is safe to jump in the water is fine.

Then why did you join a thread regarding sales?

I've added a note to my post that I've talked to people in the industry who have said week one can be a bit higher, but not much higher.

That's why I mentioned 30% as a very optimistic end of my estimate.

Thank you for this. Should put a lot into perspective. EA and UBI some of the biggest pubs around only see 10-15% in digital sales.

In all fairness, none of my friends buy from the UK store, so whatever split there is, we're not included in that number.

Which leads to my above point, everything in terms of the split is just not going to be accurate in this sense.

Thanks. Seems like my 'estimates' are wayyy out. I suppose when you have a circle of friends which majority go digital, it skews your perspective.

Statistics, never my strong point.

I'm sure you would, since that's what suits your argument. However, there is no evidence that is the case.

Are you seriously continuing with this despite the evidence stacking up in front of you?

You're not even making any sense considering you could find the game cheaper at retail in the UK than you would have been able to digitally.

but Halo is on another level!!! it is the type of game you want digitally!! it launched a bit cheaper digitally too!! have you heard of gamesharing? 9 of my 10 friends bought it digitally so digital sales must atleast be 90% if not more....

Ok I am done talking about the crazy digital sales talk from some people

It's accurate enough for an estimation.
If WW it's the worst selling Halo, then I think this, along with CoD having peaked in 2011, heralds the softening of the choke hold FPS has had on the industry coming off of the last generation.
I think it's more the fact that there are now at least 4-5 behemoths competing for that market on console when there used to be only 2. Halo and COD weren't competing with Destiny and Star Wars in 2011.

I don't know why people keep going on about digital sales, when it comes to the UK you're looking at paying £59.99, whereas you can get the game for around £35 or at most £39.99. So digital numbers aren't going to be significant.

Any idea when digital sales will start to be included in overall sales going forward? Or will this never happen in the foreseeable future?

To be fair to Halo 5, it was £45 pre-launch over here, so at least it was comparable to a lot of retail places. You could easily get it cheaper on disc if you looked though.

I think it's more about Halo not being the top dog as far as MP goes. Now you have COD which really came out and took a lot of shine away. Then you have MP games like Battlefield and other offerings.

Now you have Destiny has carved out a nice playerbase and soon we'll be getting arguably two of the biggest MP games in the next couple of weeks. COD and Battlefront. It's just a matter of times changing.

Most of those games also have a preload.

Hell, even CoD didn't become big big competition until WaW/Modern Warfare. Can't believe how that train won't stop.

Do sales numbers really determine how you feel about the game? Because it certainly seems that way. I love Halo 5 and I couldn't care less if it sells a ton or not.
