Miniature Gaming-Age (WH40k, Warmachine, Etc.)

So, my wife told me one of my Christmas presents wasn't going to make it in time. It arrived today.

Apparently that 'one' present was actually a Darkroot Wargrove. Now I have more Sylvaneth than Stormcast and Seraphon. 6000 points of Order is enough for a pretty massive game.

Looks like you have been nice and not naughty!

So how's Age of Sigmar doing? About the same or better than WFB?

I own a ton of Fantasy models (mostly to paint), but I've been thinking about giving Sigmar a try and maybe start an army.

I'm getting into after playing Goblins like 4 years ago. Got a big box of Slaves to Chaos models from Secret Santa and plan on participating in a Path to Glory campaign for the next 2 months. I'm liking how simple it is to pick up the new rules and teach my wife. Have played 2 games with her so far and haven't run into any issues yet. May need to try a game with the Goblins here soon.

AoS took a while to gain traction because of how different it was but there's definitely a lot of growth right now. Big tournaments are popping up, and it's extremely easy to get into. Much cheaper than 40k too, since all the core rules and warscrolls can be accessed for free.

If you have a local game store, ask on there if theres any players who can show you the ropes. But really all you need is a Start Collecting box and you're playing.

Hey Gaf, we already had this talk, you have to communicate ;-)
Beautiful nurses btw, o most jealoused northerner.

Me I'm slowly getting back to the hobby after some little days, resuming my work on the Start Collecting Necron. Just came back from the shop with some new brush to replace the destroyed old brush, some liquid cleaner and restorer in order to avoid doing the same thing every other week, and... what I can only see as a gift from God.
A Vallejo / Prince August patina that works like a shade but does not color things as much out of the recesses. If this works, this is my new dream product.

Any feedback from these kind of things ? The store guy demoed it to me on a little bust and at first glance it's nice. You can water down the thing even while it is on the mini and it really doesn't seem to color the whole mini.

Fingers crossed.

So I've got a 25% painted Skitarii/Wolves force I need to get on with, but tbh I'm feeling a bit meh about 40k right now. Guild Ball and Scythe are taking up all my enthusiasm.

Just like video games, go where your interests are. Drop the 40k and move on. It will still be there when you want to go back.

3 Blood Bowl rats down, 9 to go. Not batch painting them, since that tends to sap my willpower quite quickly. I like to see each model looking good fairly quickly.

I think that's the plan.
I'll probably be more interested when Skitarii or secutarii/Titan Guard get more fleshed out. I think my problem is that I'm just not interested in Marines, I'm not a fan of orks current codex & there aren't many other armies that somebody in our group doesn't already have.

I'll focus on other things for now like you say!

I've wondered. It's hard to say. A large part of me says no, because they seem to be going after an X-wing like audience but are providing unpainted minis (which are all shown in marketing materials painted nicely and based) with a IP that doesn't have the existing draw.

It's definitely gonna be a hard sell. Did they actually demo the game at gencon or just show the components? I haven't read any accounts of how it plays.

Also FFG filling shelves up with miniatures for all their three star wars games, are stores gonna really want to start carrying ton of blisters and boxes for extra army figs for a Terrinoth based game? This whole thing looks like a disaster in the making.

Also really, the setting is so generic, many fantasy settings that come out at least attempt new things or try to make their universe stand out from the rest of the usual tolkien like fodder

My store isn't. We're getting a couple of starter boxes and that's it. And this is a store that's enormous and half of it is miniatures - an aisle of SW: X-wing and SW: Armada, four aisles of GW products, one aisle of Warmahordes, one of Guildball, two aisles of Heroclix, and one of Reaper products.

There's no way we're adding more space for another product - unless it really takes off, which it likely won't since we are only getting a couple of starters.

Or maybe he has been naughty enough.. Regardless, always nice to hear about other people with SOs who appreciate their hobbies. Mine even tries to paint with me from time to time. Not because she actually really enjoys it, I think.. she wants to.. but she really doesn't. She does it to spend time with me anyway..

Which alot of stores are gonna likely be thinking, which is gonna bury this game.

I can see some stores just buying it all up just because it's FFG, but sense lot of clearance sales in the future.

Could be a shame if game is good, but perhaps they should have considered using an IP like Star Wars for the game instead? Course they consider IA a miniature battle game already....

Finally got some projects done. Here's a bigass snake and its charmer lady (Dahlia and Skarath for Warmachine). Didn't actually attach the bases yet, they're covered in tape still from priming.

I didn't really know what I wanted to do with the elf lady, and her model was frustratingly minuscule, so she's pretty boring. That eye was my third attempt and even though it's comically large, it's the best one I got. Hate doing eyeballs.

I'm quite pleased with the texture on the snake's chitin / plates at least.

Hi.
Looking for someone who hangs out in GW shops/events. Basically GW gives away voucher codes for the Total War: Warhammer dwarf character. So if you could ask for the voucher for me...
... I will not tell inquisition about your sins. But if you want something in return, then please negotiate in PM.

Thanks.

Really tempted to grab a Malifaux box or two. I'm quickly becoming a plastic addict but if I continue to buy far more than I can paint I may have to stop this hobby. I think there is a balance to attain between all the varying aspects of it in order to have a perfect time, and buying spree ain't part of it.
But man, I'm tempted to buy on or two Malifaux gang boxes.

so I put some dudes together and I am going to prime them and paint them... wish me luck... I am not rushing these since I already have an army that I have been fielding. So these are going to be my patience testing precious models lol

On the Malifaux front, the store didn't have the boxes I wanted (The Torch & The Blade and Troubleshooters) but they still had a Children of December, I'm ok with that.
Still you should have told me Wyrd use a special scale for its figure. At first glance I would call it 'fuck you when you glue, fuck you when you paint and fuck you if you think this will stay in one piece for long'.
Good Lord.
And that's without talking about the abyssal shafts between some parts. But I was briefed on the wonders of applying milliput with a brush, so if worse comes to worst I can try that.
Let down by the size and hardcore building, but the minis really have their charm.

What are you working on at the moment people ? Still on my Start Collecting Necrons on my part, something unlocked and after a day of painting thinking nothing was advancing or going right I think it's not too bad and I'm ready to start the finishing touch on the grunts (gluing, shading and highlighting). Base colors were surprisingly a pain with multiple layers of each paints, badly molded minis that I didn't clean enough and me slowing the whole thing down by starting the Tryarch stalker too.
Now that I'm fed up and focusing on the grunt I cou,d see them finished soon, even with my slow painting.

I was splitting time between a Citadel Wood and Garden of Morr but my shop just announced a new 1750 pt AoS event on the 14th so I shifted over to finishing out my last two 10-man units of Savage Orruks and a unit of Big Stabbas.

Me, I am painting Tyranids. They are...without number...I paint one and million are ready to take it's place. The Great Devourer of hobby time for sure. And these are just the first tendrils Hive Fleet Ripvallet...The Emperor protects.

Also contemplating ordering the Triumvrate.

I'm still working on my Skaven team, three rats left to go! I definitely want to get hold of Inquisitor Greyfax for a painting project, not so bothered about Celestine or Cawl though. Hopefully I can get her on ebay standalone.

I'm currently assembling a Catacomb Command Barge for her Necron majesty Boudeka the Victorious, Phaerakh of the Khel'tek Dynasty from the Crownworld Albyon.

any advice on how I can get some proper lighting so I dont miss any spots? I get most of my paint time at night so the next day things dont look so great...

also I was using a napkin for my canvas but I feel like I may be blowing through a ton of paint too fast doing that. any ideas for a cheap and easy to reuse canvas?

Any glazed ceramic pallet will last forever. The paint stays fairly wet, and cleans off easily. One-time purchase and then you're done.

Got some submissions for the latest painting challenge. Deadline is Wednesday for those still interested in submitting something.

It's getting close to my first miniature painting anniversary. This calls for celebration!

I just might need to take a break from the xenos and paint me an Ultramarine.

My hobby time has taken a back seat for a while due to the birth of my second son (a worthwhile trade I think lol) as I can't find a way of not filling the room with glue fumes. I'd occasionally get a little lightheaded after a prolonged assembly session and I'd not exposing a newborn to even a fraction of that because I have basic parenting skills lol.

I have however just finished buying up the models for my mini Tau army though. It's a small force exclusively for 500 point lists, my regular opponent is doing the same with a Necron force. The whole thing is an exercise in getting both of us to put more thought into our lists and for him to learn how to strategise a little better. Also we both wanted an army made of only the cheesiest cheese.

My list:

Ethereal
10 x Fire Warriors
5 x Fire Warriors
5 x Pathfinders
1 Broadside w/ Rail Rifle and Smart Missile System
1 Riptide w/ Ion Accelerator and Smart Missile System

That leaves me with 10 points to play with, I'm thinking either an extra Fire warrior or a couple of Early Warning Overrides for the Riptide and Broadside to make sneaky reserves think twice. Have to say I'm really happy with the list, can't wait to give it a try. Basic idea is the Ethereal forms a budget gunline with the Fire Warriors, the Pathfinders hide in a piece of cover and throw out markerlights for a turn or two until they get murdered, the Riptide can spend his time jetpacking around, blasting things and grabbing objectives and the Broadside can snipe at high armour infantry/transports, grab objectives or support the gunline.

Congrats for the miniature human, Reyn! We are expecting our first to arrive in just a few weeks, so my hobby time will be under the warhammer too. At least we can still buy minis, so that's at least one part of the hobby lol.

In that vein, I'm splitting the Triumvirate with a friend. He's getting Cawl and I'm getting the ladies. I'm pretty nervous about doing those minis justice.

Congrats to you too Staffy, and yeah, hobby will suffer lol. I'm sitting on five boxes of stuff I can't assemble and by the time this tiny guy gets into a proper sleep pattern you just know that pile will have grown.

Congratulations on the new arrivals fellas. I bet assembly line painting will get easier with more helping hands in a few years. :)

Last months painting challenge submissions will be put up tonight. If you wanted to vote on the next challenge but didn't get a chance to then we still have a few hours.

As for me, I'm moving across the country at the end of the month, so if someone would like to volunteer to put up next months challenge in early February I'd greatly appreciate it since I'll need a few days to get set up in my new place. I'll make the banner and everything, just need someone to post it.

We're starting the new year with an aggressive, in your face theme. Our community is showcasing their close combat specialists this month, those who would rather bring the fight right up to the noses of their hated enemies. It takes a special sort of warrior to trust their melee weaponry in order to charge into battle and face their opponent head on, but you can bet that when they bring their trusted weapons to bear they're very likely to masterfully carve a path through the line or level an entire squad that stands in their way.

Took down a unit of Man O' War Shocktroopers with Officer (closeup). Got these guys done over a couple days. Technically they have guns in their shields (which is a very silly thing) but they're hot trash; these dudes definitely wanna march up the field as an unbreakable phalanx until they get close enough to lay waste with those big axes.

My hand to hand specialist is not quite infantry size, but can't go wrong with four extragalactic swords of unknown origin, can you? I'm not sure if my modification to the Hive Tyrant / Swarmlord were for the better in the end, but at least it's unique.

Sylvaneth Dryads

I finally jumped in on some Sylvaneth to add more variety to my order army - which now a Stormcast, Seraphon and Sylvaneth joint force. I have something like 5000 points worth of models and only about 1600 or so are actually painted. A lot of work ahead of me on this one but I've been breaking it down into smaller projects. This one was the Branchwych and a unit of Dryads. I decided to go with an autumn theme after seeing Android's sweet Kurnoth Hunters a few months back.

I'm really happy with how they came out.

This is an Oniwaban, from the Japanese Sectorial Army from Infinity. Although the game isn't very melee friendly, I started a fireteam of JSA soldiers because I absolutely love ninja. This is cheating a little because he has a pistol, but Oniwaban really deal their damage with their swords. The studio model is painted green rather than blue, but I wanted to try these colors for my own ninja and I like how it came out. The red sheath especially sets it off. The base is meant to meld industrial and nature settings, and for me, the brightly colored valve and flowers bring it all together nicely. Fun model to paint, very imposing, but unfortunately kind of annoying to assemble.

Wonderful work as always. We've got a steady stream of entries every month, but starting in March we'll have an open category for those who have made some headway in their painting pile. The themed category will still exist as it does now. It'll serve as a way of helping people break out of a painting rut or as an exercise in something atypical of what you might be used to painting. Everyone is welcome to step up to the challenge. And as it's the start of a new year, the choices for the March group build will be shaken up as well. For February, our theme will be: Cover Up

- Scatter terrain or large terrain feature
- Single or multiple pieces, any landscape
- Include a brief description of your approach to this challenge

The choices for the February group build are:

- BFG (single model with ranged heavy weapon)
- Yes, Sergeant! (Single squad leader model)
- One Shot, One Kill (Single sniper model)
- Duel at Dusk (Multiple model diorama)

Past Group Builds

NeoGAF Wargaming Community Group Build #1: Robe and Wizard Hat

Cool minis again, guys! It's fun to see everyone's style of painting on different things each month.

I can take care of setting up next month, no problem.

This is my entry for the local Warhammer store painting competition for the month. I probably put like 20 hours into this guy. Pleased with it!

Great work from everyone else this month too! Will have to see if I get anything appropriate to the next group build, since I'm working mostly on Tzeentch this month!

Just finished undercoating a bunch of Tau I've been restoring. I got a Devilfish, ten Pathfinders and a Cadre Fireblade for about £6 (there was other stuff in the bundle), but it was all in horrible condition. The paint jobs had been applied using thumbs, I think. I think they were glued together with PVA or something too because three pieces fell off the devilfish in transport and the whole thing just disintegrated and every single arm, head and weapon fell off when I removed it all from a bath in dettol. That shouldn't happen with super glue or plastic glue.

Anyway, I gave it all two baths in dettol, got to work with the toothbrush, cleaned all the joins and reassembled it all before undercoating it last night and it's come out brilliantly. I know that it's a lot more work to restore them than to just buy them new but I can't resist a bargain and I honestly get a lot of pleasure from restoring minis which would otherwise have been written off.

Now to eventually get them poorly painted myself so that somebody else can restore them again in the future!
