you're thousands of times more likely to suffer from one of these serious injuries driving down the road than in an amusement park ride.

Unforunately, accidents do happen. Doesn't make it right, but you can't completely prevent accidents from happening, only lower the chances.

Yeah, but I just don't get much fun from Roller Coasters anyway. I just get paranoid of losing something or I feel sick/get a headache. I like other kinds of rides, just not roller coasters. Not sure why, used to love that stuff when I was younger though.

Lawsuit will focus on that particular Six Flags and the Six Flags franchise:

- careless maintenance
- careless operation of an unsafe device

In a case like this where children are put in danger, and thus amputated, the lawsuit will be massive. If it was broken legs, or injury that can heal, it would probably be in the thousands, but a life altering injury like this means 5 million - at least. The argument is, that cable could have hit her higher and killed her. This would weigh heavily in court.

You can bet Kentucky's best lawyers will be calling that girls family offering up services, because this is a slamdunk.

Oh, at a Six Flags I went to, there was a ride with these horrible lap restraints that never stopped getting tighter. They seriously almost crushed my testicles. ;_;

True, and the same thing goes with driving to the store for the chance to win a big lottery.

Roller coasters are pretty boring to me since I know in my gut that I won't get hurt. Occasionally I like to read about some of these before going to one in order to add a little bit more scare into it.

One story that particulary struck a chord with me was one where a kid got his leg caught in the wheels of a kid's roller coaster ride while disembarking. Apparently another kid who had just gotten off wandered over to the control panel and pressed a button out of curiosity which started up the ride. This wouldn't happen at large attractions since they usually require multiple buttons to be pressed, but is still pretty chilling.

Whereas she has plenty of ground, but nothing to.....
Ok, retreating back from the line.
:lol ... :( I think I just felt my soul die a little.

I'm really surprised how few people would not give up their two feet for two million dollars.

You can upgrade your foot enlessly for the rest of your life. Especially from all the interest raking in, not to mention the profit from ampuporn.

The PROPRIO FOOT™ uses accelerometers to sample ankle motion over a thousand times per second. It identifies specific ankle motion events such as heel strike, to enable a timely response to variations in terrain and activity.

Look what they did for nintendo's old technology. Can you image a waggle foot?

I think I just blew my own mind.

(CNN) -- A girl's feet were cut off Thursday when a free-fall thrill ride malfunctioned at the Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom Amusement Park in Louisville, Kentucky, police said.

A cord wrapped around the 16-year-old's feet and severed them at her ankles while she was on the "Superman Tower of Power," a police dispatcher said. The girl was taken to a local hospital.

An unidentified witness told CNN affiliate WLKY she saw a cable on the ride snap.

"The people on the ride just came and hit the ground," she said. "When I got up there, the lady she was just sitting there, and she didn't have no legs. ... And she was just there, calm, probably in shock from everything."

"That could have been all of us -- riding that ride," witness Whitney Sandfer told CNN affiliate WDRB/WMYO.

The incident took place shortly before 5 p.m. ET, according to Six Flags spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg. The park remained open, but the ride in question was shut down and will remain so until the full investigation is complete, Goldberg said.

you can't put a price on sparks
now, i'm not technically scared of roller coasters, i know that you're safe 99% of the time on a roller coaster, and things like this isn't what actually scares me about roller coasters.

its my pituitary gland, methinks -- it just goes haywire when the gs from being on a roller coaster/horse/anything that is pretty much an open carriage that i don't have complete control over (i do get sort of the same feeling from a go-kart at around 20 mph however, yet feel nothing from a car going 85.)

i just freak out, i hate it. of course the stories of amputating body parts and having freaking feet raining on you isn't exactly a very pleasant story to remember about something i'm already freaked out about going on.

When these kind of things happen the first thing that comes to my mind is my family. I'd hate to see them suffer.

Wish there was a way to help that poor girl.

The thrill seeker in me wants to get on this ride as soon as possible, now. Not only am I being dropped from very high, but there's an amputation risk. I've got half a stack just thinking about the risk.

Narrator: But Michael thought Rita might be coming, and he was desperate to impress her. Meanwhile, Maeby was trying to get knocked out of the pageant.

Pope Impersonator: Pope Impersonator, Church. How has God influenced your life?

Maeby: About just as much as Big Bird and the Keebler elves.

Pope Impersonator: Well, my faith would’ve been shaken if He had taken my legs, too.

G.O.B.: G.O.B. Bluth. State. I was betrayed by my brother, Michael! Who’s your favorite family member, and why?

Maeby: Definitely not my shallow, materialistic mother, who only cares about looks.

G.O.B.: I think we all feel that way about our mothers, and we all have legs.

what kind of a weirdo would make a website about that and have stats since 1972? Who cares enough about accidents at amusement parks to dedicate their life to it?

You forgot your -timedog signature!

Isn't this why we ride roller coasters? For the infinitesimally small chance of mutilation or death? I feel bad for the girl but she will get her payday and live to tell her tale.

Wow, some of you would give up your feet for a measly 2 million dollars? I could never do that, I would be throwing away a big part of my life if I ever did so.

What happened to this girl really sucks, with all the money these them parks have, it amazes me that they can't do regular maintenance on all their rides.

First thing I would think about after losing my feet is... how much it will cost me to have feet again. Fuggedaboutit man.

Maybe because it's quite feasible to earn it whilst keeping all of your body parts.

Oh dude, you have not lived. It is so much fun. Like the guy in the article said, things like this have only a one in a million chance of happening.

She may not have her feet, but as far as money goes shes set for life.

Yea, and I bet you know even when she realizes how much money she has, she will still wish she never climbed into that ride.

Some of you guys are dumb. Do you really think all that money is going to make a difference to a teenage girl that will never live a life of normalcy? How many teenagers feel awkward and uncomfortable with their own identity without having to be the freak w/o feet.

I'd rather lose my feet/legs than my arms. People run marathons and climb mountains with artifical legs but arms (specifically hands) are far more complicated and important in day to day life.

I can't believe some of you are joking about what happened to this kid. I hope you aren't the same people that get offended by racial/gay jokes...

Sure, the lawsuit is going to be massive, but this kid has a lot of shit to go through now having no feet. I worked with an absolutely beautiful girl that lost an arm at a young age, got a very comfortable settlement (still decided to work so she could interact with society) and she still had a hard time- people making fun of her, work limitations, self-conscious anxiety, recreation limitations. The sad thing is all of that is probably easy compared to losing two feet.

I can only guess some of you are simply incapable of putting yourself in this kid's (or even her parent's) position... or you probably just don't give a shit. Not to be the captain of the karma police here, but I hope none of you ****ing comedians ever have to see something like this happen to your kid.

Oh boo hoo, dude. It's better imo to make light out of a situation then going around pouting all day. I'm with you that this girl is gonna have to go through a lot of shit in the next few years, even for the rest of her life, and I hope she does well and manages to recover mentally. But shit happens. When 9/11 happened, there was only a moratorium on joking about it for like a week - i remember the forums I visited joking about it with "Excellence in Hijacking" images shortly thereafter.

It sucks, it's terrible for her and her family. But damn she hasn't got a leg to stand on! etc etc

Wait, wait.....was she the sole person injured on the ride?

In a perfect world, I would expect the park to pay for any medical bills, and lost time at work.
You should know that you take a risk when you ride amusement rides.

However, if corners were cut in maintenance, or it was a result of negligence, then a person should go for damages beyond medical.

Its not just the lawsuit, all Six Flags are probably gonna see a drop in attendance after this.

I was going to say "that's why I love Cedar Point, this shit never happens", but looking at Rideaccidents, things have happened. The week of me going there this year, a brake system on Magnum didn't work 100% so the one car hit another car at 10mph. Not bad but I guess shit happens everywhere.

Welp...I think I've been on enough rollercoaster rides in my life. No sense tempting fate! If it was a cable that just snapped, it could have caught her neck instead of her feet. o_O

This whole situation is pretty terrrible. I occassionally forget that anything can be joked about on GAF, even when the situation is ****ed up enough already.

And the funny part is, the period right after something like this is when it's the safest to go. Something goes wrong, maintenance becomes more likely to go to greater lengths than normal to make sure everything's safe.

It's when nothing like this has happened for a while and maintenance is no longer on high alert that you gotta watch out.

Yes, I knew that. Sorry, I guess I wasn't very clear in my post. My "who are these people?" line was directed at these people quoted in the article. I know it's already been talked about, but...

“When I got up there, the lady, she was just sitting there and she didn’t have no legs,” Smith said. “She didn’t have no legs at all."

and

"My son’s over there tripping out, man,” Williams said. “You want to come to a park and feel safe you know. We’ve got season passes. We’re not coming back for sure

and

“Every park, one in a million maybe something happens,” park visitor Kenneth Lay said. “But I have no fear.”

Could they have found better bumpkins? I'm amazed how well a Mr. Show sketch from, like, ten years ago skewers this news story perfectly. I mean, even the name of the ride ("Devastator" vs. "Hellevator") is just fucking prescient.

Man, this story was RIDDLED with grammatical idiocy:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The president of Swiss ride-maker Intamin said a failed cord on Six Flags' Kentucky Kingdom's Superman Tower of Power is what caused a girl's legs to be severed while she rode it on Thursday.

Intamin president Sandor Kernacs said his company provided the ride to Kentucky Kingdom about 14 years ago, but did not supply the cord.

Dispatchers said they were notified of the accident around 5 p.m. Thursday. Officials said both the teen's feet were detached above the ankles.

According to Kentucky Kingdom's Web site the Superman Tower of Power is 177 feet tall and drops riders at 54 miles per hour.

“We seen the cable break loose soon as it got to the top on the right-hand side,” said Chris Williams, who witnessed the event.

Treva Smith said it snapped again as the ride descended.

“The people on the ride just came and hit the ground,” Smith said.

Williams said she saw the teen maimed.

“As the ride came down, the wire swung left, struck the young lady on the back side of my children,” Williams said.

Williams’ daughter Amber said she gave up her seat to the 13-year-old and was sitting on the other side of the ride. Williams rushed toward the ride to find his daughter. As Smith raced to find members of her group, she said she made a gruesome discovery.

“When I got up there, the lady, she was just sitting there and she didn’t have no legs,” Smith said. “She didn’t have no legs at all. She was just calm, probably in shock from everything.”

Smith said she saw no blood and the girl wasn’t crying, but the same couldn’t be said for many who witnessed the incident on the ride formerly known as the Hellevator.

“My son’s over there tripping out, man,” Williams said. “You want to come to a park and feel safe you know. We’ve got season passes. We’re not coming back for sure.”

But other visitors aren’t so worried.

“Every park, one in a million maybe something happens,” park visitor Kenneth Lay said. “But I have no fear.”

On scene EMT personnel were on hand to immediately transport the girl to a hospital. As of 10:34 p.m. Thursday there was no word on her condition.

Inspectors arrived Thursday night to begin determining what happened. They said they checked checking the cable in question.

The ride was shut down and was scheduled to remain so until the investigation has been completed. On Friday, Six Flags spokeswoman Carolyn McClean said the company is shutting down similar rides in other parks. King's Island in Cincinnati, which has a similar ride from the same manufacturer, announced that ride will be closed until it has been inspected.

Intamin is considered a leader in the design of amusement park rides. It has supplied some two dozen different styles of rides at amusement parks around the world. The company is responsible for a number of rides similar to Superman Tower of Power, and is credited with inventing the first free-fall ride.
