An awesome Sports Illustrated article on Macho Man's life, dating back to his minor league baseball days and throughout his wrestling career:

As someone who's followed pro wrestling for years now, there's unfortunately been many wrestler deaths over the years. But perhaps none of them hit as hard as Macho Man's death.

On the morning of May 20, 2011, Savage died at age 58 after suffering a sudden heart attack[113][114] while driving with his wife in Seminole, Florida.[115] He became unresponsive and lost control of his Jeep Wrangler, crashing into a tree.

Initial reports of Savage's death indicated that he had been killed in the collision,[116] when in fact he and his wife had been wearing seatbelts and suffered only minor physical injuries in the crash.[114] An autopsy performed by the medical examiner's office found that he had an enlarged heart and advanced coronary artery disease (more than 90% narrowed). The drugs found in his system included a prescription painkiller and a small amount of alcohol. Savage had never been treated for heart problems and there was no evidence that he was aware of his heart condition. The cause of death was officially ruled as atherosclerotic heart disease.[114][117]

Savage's remains were cremated and placed under a favorite tree on his property in Largo, Florida, near his mother's development. Ten days before his death, he had asked his brother, Lanny Poffo, to pour the ashes of his dog in the same spot.

There were obviously many great moments in Macho Man's pro wrestling career, and I'll highlight a few of them:

And there's obviously a ton more, but that's why I want you guys to share your favorite moments in this thread. :)

The amazing thing about Macho Man is just how much he transcended pro wrestling itself to entertain so many people in so many different entertainment mediums over the years. Even if you never watched pro wrestling in your life, you still might've seen Macho Man in some movie or TV show or even in a cartoon, and with that trademark voice of his, he instantly caught your attention.

Here are some of the many examples of Macho Man's appearances in movies and TV shows over the years:

I remember that day so well because it was the last day of my student-teaching. I was so thrilled to be done, and as I am about to leave, I check my phone and see a bunch of texts from my friends telling me that Randy Savage died. I was devastated.

I remember someone on Twitter saying that pro wrestlers are the closest thing we have to real life superheroes, and to me Savage was a superhero. One of my favorites of all-time.

One of the greats.

I got into wrestling in about 1992 or so, so it was after his epic run of the previous 5 or 6 years as he was tailing off in WWF. My memories of him when I was watching him live were in the 1993 Royal Rumble when it looked like he might do the impossible and get rid of Yokozuna from the rumble, only to forget himself and go for the pin and then get spectacularly tossed over the top rope from a pinning position. Stupid in retrospect, but a pretty cool spot and a great way to put over the new monster heel.

Following that he had an understated career in WWF. Master of Ceremonies at Wrestlemania 9, announcing, and guest spots at Summer Slam. I was gobbling up as much wrestling footage as I could as a kid and every weekend rented a different PPV from my video rental store, so I went back and watched the Jake Roberts feud which was awesome. Anybody know the reason why WWF started to downplay him? Were they looking for new young talent w/ the Hogans and Ultimate Warrior generation moving on, or was he hurt and still locked in a WWF contract?

That Ted Debiase/Jake Roberts vs. Macho Man feud also setup the Undertaker's face turn and basically set the bedrock for the Undertaker to be one of the most popular wrestlers ever.

Great career, sad what happened to him and Miss Elizabeth.

Driving to work, sports radio went into the commercial break saying another wrestler had died and it's a big one. Get into the parking lot. Figure I would wait and see.

The program came back from the break without saying anything, just playing Pomp and Circumstance. Heart just sunk.

I remember attending a graduation when I was little and getting excited when Pomp and Circumstance started to play. I thought Randy Savage was coming on stage.

I've never cared for wrestling, but I did greatly enjoy watching Macho Man out of the ring. That voice, and his shenanigans were always extremely entertaining. I was greatly saddened to learn of his death.

Heart issue?
I was watching the Macho Man documentary on WWE Network last month, and one part in particular really stood out to me.

Towards the end, they were interviewing Hulk Hogan, and Hogan was talking about how he went to the same doctor as Savage did in the Tampa area. A few months or so after Macho Man's death, Hogan went to the doctor's office, and the doctor mentioned to him how Savage was always so resistant to getting tests done at the doctor's office and how he would always put off getting an EKG or Echo "for another time." Savage was always more concerned about making sure that his mother was taken care of at the doctor's office before him. When the doctor would ask Savage about getting an EKG or Echo, Savage would basically tell him "We'll do it next time", but it didn't happen. The doctor apparently told Hogan that Savage would still be alive if he had taken the time to get his heart checked out.

That was a good read. I never knew anything about the guy other than his catch phrases from interviews. I learned something new today!

I will contend, to this day, that "Piledriver" is the best episode of anything ever.

"I met your father once in a steel cage match. I wish you coulda seen your old man weeping like a woman after my patented Piledriver!
Yeah, Your dad remembers me! OHHH YEEEEEAH!
"

Definitely one of the most memorable dudes to ever be a top name, but I have to say that, at the risk of sounding grim, I'm happy for the fact that died after having gotten out of the business and actually was enjoying his life, rather than being found in some anonymous hotel. Probably the biggest name to walk away and stay gone, no cameos or anything. I respect that.

I can't believe it has been five years already, time has flown by. Macho Man is one of the most entertaining wrestlers ever, he just oozed charisma.

Always makes me wonder what characters will be remembered so fondly from current WWE. Enzo and Big Cass?

Favourite old school wrestler. Had such a strong gimmick and was also a good wrestler which was a rare combination in those days. He's the only man to have spiderman for 3 minutes.
