‘Battlefield 1’ (-39%) defends its title for a second week despite the debuts of several new titles.

While both Battlefield 3 & 4 saw second week declines of 54%, Battlefield 1 delivers a strong second week (-39%) to comfortably claim its second crown. For Bethesda’s ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition’ it means a second place debut. Despite not claiming top spot it’s still a hugely successful debut for the Xbox One and PS4 version. It sits second behind 2011’s original in terms of best debut launch weeks in the Elder Scrolls series. ‘Fifa 17’ (-6%) has only a slight slowdown in sales but drops down a place to No3 in its 5th week on chart.

EA make it three titles in the Top 4 this week as ‘Titanfall 2’ lands at No4. The sequel to 2014’s Microsoft exclusive (Xbox One / 360 and PC) can’t match the debut heights of the original, which claimed top spot at launch (as well as 4 subsequent No1 crowns). It does however add both a single player campaign and a PS4 to its list of formats this time round. ‘Farming Simulator 17’ ploughs its way to No5 following its Tuesday release. The series’ popularity continues to grow with sales up almost 54% on PS4 and 32% on Xbox One over Farming Simulator 15. (Farming Simulator 16 was solely for PS Vita in the UK). Bandai Namco’s ‘Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2’ also claims a Top 10 spot at No7 in its debut week. Retailer promotions help ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ (+89%) and ‘Forza Horizon 3’ (+11%) deliver positive sales growth at No9 and No10.

A second RPG title in the form of Square Enix’s ‘World of Final Fantasy’ is another debutant this week but lands just outside the Top 10 at No11. ‘Just Dance 2017’ is new at No26 as Ubisoft’s latest release breathes some life into Nintendo formats particularly Wii, which claims a 44% share and Wii U a further 16%. The final new release to claim a Top 40 spot is Telltales’ ‘Minecraft: Story Mode – The Complete Adventure’ at No31. The new edition features every episode and bonus content on the disc since the original ‘Story Mode’ launched almost a year ago.

Audience to Titanfall:

Translation:
We came, we saw....we left.

Can't wait for EA To blame the single-player campaign as opposed to their terrible release date.

I don't the think the tech test had much to do with it. Just the release date and not having microsofts marketing muscle behind it this time

Only good news is that probably TF2 price will drop so quickly, anyway EA made a terrible mistake at launch it in a that busy time window. Hope it will have some legs in coming weeks.

Between Titanfall 2 and the big Tomb Raider drop, not releasing your first game (or releasing it later) on PS4 does not sound like a good way to take care of your IP to me.

Great job for Skyrim though, I wonder if the PS4 version would be so high without the PS4 Pro announcement (which totally turned the tables on Amazon). The split in favor of Xbox 360 must have been huge back in time, wasn't it ?

Whew! TF2 has got to be one of the biggest bombs in recent memories. PS4 version couldn't even outsell a rusty Gears in its 3rd week. It's a disaster.

Seems EA killed the franchise.

The weird part is EVERYONE saw this coming, so did EA activly kill the franchise or were they just that arrogant about releasing two fps games within a week of each other?

I must know the secret of Farming Simulator 2017's success.

It's very, very relaxing.
No gunfights, blood, fighting, chaos, checkpoints, survival, pressure, frustrations, raids and game overs…

You just… take care of your crops and animals and drive some awesome machinery.

Due to a lot of people saying how good the campaign is, I will pick Titanfall 2 up in a few months when it hits the £15-£20 range. I have very little interest in the multiplayer side of things, so that price seems reasonable for a 5-6 hour campaign.

Soooo it's kind of like Harvest Moon?

I think there were a few people that thought the PS4 version could really lift the franchise and make it a top tier seller. The reality was not releasing the game on PS4 originally meant a lot of gamers don't know or care for the franchise to invest in its sequel. Especially being released alongside the 2 big hitters and Skyrim. And how many of those 7 million TF buyers bought it full price and not in a bundle or a firesale to care day 1 for the sequel. I think there's lots of factors in the franchises downfall. But all completely botched up by EA in the end.

It may have had some chance early next year with a big exclusive marketing campaign to support it but even then I don't think it could have lived up to the week 1 sales of the original.

Boy, you're just wringing your hands for this game to die. It's strange to see such bloodlust for a well made game.

Please show me where I've stated me wanting the game to die. Commentating on how bad it's sold and wanting it to flop are 2 different things. Beyond the beta/tech test I have no opinion on the quality of the product.

They should just released in March again. Its just not a established franchise yet to compete with COD and Battlefield. Also the first title didnt came to the PS4. So you dont have a fanbase there yet. March would have been perfect again. Alot of people want something new then. Usual COD players also pissed of at COD like every year then and then, he here comes Titanfall. Lets try that.

I wish World of Final Fantasy scored higher but 11 is fine.
I was expecting Skyrim would be lower for a Remaster and I expected to sell more on Xbox. Obviously the better mods support really didn't play a factor into it.

Titanfall 2 was lower than expected but the Xbox selling more was expected.

Will we get a percentage breakdown for Titanfall and Skyrim?

It was stupid to release Titanfall and Battlefield so close to each other. It should have been Battlefield and Mass Effect Andromeda this side of Christmas and Titanfall 2 in March.

While not dismissing that factor because it's obviously important, what I find in common between those 2 and some others like Deus Ex MD is that when the previous game falls like a rock in price in a very short time like happened to those, people are much more cautious about going day 1 to the sequel because they know what's going to happen.

When my son is a bit older I'll probably buy him a Farming Simulator game. He loves tractors and machinery and it'd be a nice game to play together. He's a bit young for games at the moment though (not quite 4).

Whoever at ea ok'd the launch date for tf2 knowing it would clash with bf1 shouldn't have a job right now. It was clear as day to anyone who follows games that wasn't a good idea at all, well done ea this title deserved way more sales than it's going to get because of your fuck ups.

Minecrasft and rocket League fall out the top 10 (rl was also outside last week) but GTA5 remains in there as the only evergreen title, damn all these games are just money printing machines now, can't wait to watch Danny NoClip rocket league doc today!

Disappointed for Respawn, Looks like I'm one of few who picked up Titanfall ahead of Battlefield. Impressive numbers from Skyrim though.

-39% is an incredibly good hold for an AAA title, no?

Yeah, it appears to be. I had a similar conversation last week with some folk over Gears 4's 70-something percent drop, and apparently a 60-70% drop is pretty standard for a AAA release.

Whoever at ea ok'd the launch date for tf2 knowing it would clash with bf1 shouldn't have a job right now. It was clear as day to anyone who follows games that wasn't a good idea at all, well done ea this title deserved way more sales than it's going to get because of your fuck ups.

We've even got people from Respawn saying they were dead set on this release date as well. I mean, it's great if they have faith in their product, but it seems everyone outside of EA and Respawn knew this was a dumb release date and suicide for a franchise which is still trying to establish itself. Were they so determined to take wind out of COD's sails that they never considered if it was wise to release so soon after BF1?!

I really need to hurry up and pick up Titanfall 2. That release date, EA, why.

GTAV continues to be a impossible behemoth. Mother of god, I wonder if RDR2 will have similar legs.

I can never quite tell when a chart placing is good or bad, but 11 doesn't seem too bad for WoFF. I'm really surprised by the game in general, honestly. The game is genuinely hilarious, addictive fun (with an amazing localization), I hope it does well over the next few months. It's one of the best spin-offs/sub-series that Square has ever done, I'm having a blast. Like with FFXV, I wish they'd advertised the game a bit better. It's a lot funnier - and less slapstick - than I thought it was going to be.

I think it might have had it not launched along side bf1 and along side skyrim and world of ff, it launched at the wrong time and in the middle of a lot of other titles. I'm betting if it launched in a week with less other games in the line up it would've been like almost every other release with a split in favour of ps4.

Not great for FF but an ok position. Will probably fall like a rock this week however.

Good second week for BF and again at the detriment to TF. Although I think BF first week sales were under par, will be interesting to see how it does over the weeks and against CoD.

Again I believe CoD will be down but the MW remaster could mean a better first week than last years. Will be very interesting to see where it turns up.

I wouldn't take this as evidence for anything, EA are paying the bills, no one at respawn is silly enough to come out and say, "yeah EA made us release on this date."

We've seen in the past EA make decisions that respawn didn't know about until the last minute, there's no doubt for me EA made them release it to try to take some of the wind out of CODs sales.

Feel sorry for respawn, but for me it also shows the lack of impact of the first game, it sold tons in Xbox got critical acclaim from the players, yet those players didn't feel compelled to buy the sequel.

While both Battlefield 3 & 4 saw second week declines of 54%, Battlefield 1 delivers a strong second week (-39%) to comfortably claim its second crown.

It's a shame about the way Titanfall is handled and if the franchise survives this I'm going to be very very surprised. I don't know what's going on in the heads of people at EA regarding the scheduling of their IPs.

Then I'd argue Xbox might have outsold it if they didn't alienate a big part of their fanbase with all the changes. A whole lot of mights.. At the end of the day it didn't.

Also xbox has those games too other than FF.. but considering it's charting position I highly doubt it impacted it anything meaningful. I doubt even TF2 PS4 + FF outsold TF2 XB1.

I really don't believe Respawn didn't have a lot of say in this. The IP is theirs and I'm sure when originally signing the contract to go with EA as publisher they negotiated a lot of control over their game, like not being forced to release at a time they weren't happy with.

Of course, this is kind of moot as we'll likely never know one way or the other.

But Microsoft is marketing it this time

Titanfall had "CoD Killer Saviour of XB1" level of hype and marketing with practically every influencer frothing hyperboles of adoration for the first game PRE-RELEASE.

Titanfall 2? Your average AAA marketing.

Worth noting Titanfall 1 had a full week while Titanfall 2 had since Friday. Still though... oops. Hopefully word of mouth gives it strong legs.

Chobel where you at?

Bloody hell to think the 360 version potentially opened up bigger than either version this time and the 360 was a delayed release to boot.

Those are very grim numbers. That's one titan fall from height.
