NPD shares their definition of "core gamers", estimates 34 million in the US

I thought this would be useful for any future reports they make on this subject.

There's perhaps a controversial exclusion or two in here somewhere as well...

The report comes from a survey of more than 7,900 core gamers ages 9 and up conducted in March. The research firm defined "core gamer" as anyone who plays five hours or more on Microsoft or Sony consoles, PC, or Mac, and plays in certain genres (action, adventure, fighting, flight, MMOs, racing, real-time strategy, RPGs, shooters, or sports games) on those platforms.

The NPD Group put the total US core gamer audience at 34 million people, with the average player spending 22 hours a week on games. Two-thirds of them also played games on mobile devices, and 70 percent played multiplayer games at least occasionally.

"Core gamers are really the lifeblood of the industry, spending tremendous amounts of time on their hobby of choice," said NPD analyst Liam Callahan. "With the new console generation off to a great start, we can expect the amount of time spent gaming to increase as more core gamers adopt them."

That sounds like a pretty reasonable definition all things considered.

Nintendo's exclusion is interesting

Nintendo, also handhelds in general, are crying. ;_;

(Though I can see the reasoning. And maybe Vita is included in 'Sony consoles', idk.)

Nintendo console and handheld core gamers confirmed to be ghosts

Super Mario Galaxy 2 never existed

I actually don't even think Nintendo's exclusion is that crazy. Nintendo has no core appeal. They have the two farthest ends of the spectrum, casuals and enthusiasts, but no core appeal at all aside from like, Zelda. All they make is either too casual for core gamers (Kirby, Mario) or too hardcore (Wonderful 101, Pikmin). Using them as a metric to measure core gamers would be almost useless.

Goin hardcore on my Macbook Air right now

We the most hardcore playerbase out there - you can't call yourself a gamer without having played Super Meat Boy on a overheating keyboard and having the constant noise of a struggling fan in your ears

Steam saved me from being a casual. Thank you GabeN. I was casual up until like 4 years ago. Feels bad man.

I know Nintendo has fallen on hard times recently, and that a lot of games, especially on Wii, were shovelware, but I still find their exclusion somewhat surprising.

That is just an absolutely weird definition. The easiest definition would be by how often or consistently they spend (time/money) on game hardware and software.

Nintendo went after the hardcore without realizing its impossible to be included on that generalization with you play Nintendo games.

Also, those Mac hardcore players...

The funny thing is that someone playing AC4 on PS3 is hardcore, if they play on the Wii U they are not any more?

There are two types of core gamers. The bro types who want to play epic games and the enthusiast types that tend to populate NeoGAF. Oftentimes they are one and the same. Exclusion of Nintendo makes perfect sense since they are not interested in those consumers.

Definitions According to GAF:
Hardcore Gamer- noun- One that spends more time arguing about games on the internet than actually playing them.

I don't think I get 5 hours in every week
except on my Vita.
