The All Formats chart receives a much needed boost with 2K/Take 2’s ‘Evolve’ leading the pack of new debutants and taking the No1 crown.

Xbox One just edges the format share by a mere 1% with fewer than 400 sales between the two Gen 8 versions, while PC accounts for just 3% of boxed units. For Take 2 it’s their first chart topping title that’s not part of the Grand Theft Auto franchise since ‘Bioshock Infinite’ back in March 2013. With the release of new Nintendo 3DS & 3DS XL consoles giving a 57% boost to hardware this week, it’s no surprise that two new 3DS titles debut in the Top 5. ‘The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D’ lands at No2 and is the biggest selling single format title of the week. ‘Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’ (+14%) is forced down to third place despite promotions driving strong sales. The second monster hunting title in the chart this week is the aptly named ‘Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate’, which makes its mark at No4. The title’s week 1 sales are an impressive 95% up on predecessor ‘Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate’ as the series starts to gain real traction in the West. ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ (-7%) and ‘FIFA 15’ (-1%) are both down 3 places to No5 and No6 respectively.

A colossal sales push driven by retailer promotions pushes Ubisoft’s ‘Far Cry 4’ (+128%) up two places to No7. Familiar face ‘Minecraft: Xbox Edition’ (-13%) is at No8 although ‘Minecraft: PlayStation Edition’ (-9%) slips to No11. Assassin’s Creed: Unity’ (-16%) and ‘Destiny’ (+3%) round off the Top 10 at No9 and No10.

Cool. The fanbase is there for this kind of games.

I wish last gen would die already :(

Why? Not everyone would like to spend money to buy a new platform already.

It'll go away when PS4/XB1 actually get around to giving people good incentives to buy in. Things that aren't just remakes or slightly shinier versions of what you can have on 360/PS3. There's precious little of that around right now and still an awful lot of functioning 360s/PS3s

Fuck yes at MM getting the number one spot!

Hope it has legs too, both so more people can enjoy the best Zelda game ever made, and in the hopes we'll get a direct sequel to finish off the Hero of Times story.

Also that less than 400 sales difference between XO and PS4 for Evolve has to smart. The install base difference in the UK isn't as massive as it is most everywhere else, so I can't believe MS are going to be feeling they got their money's worth on that co-marketing deal.

Kinda selfish but cross gen ports are holding the current gen back.

Seeing the performance of Xbox One games so far, I fear that the current gen consoles are what is holding back the current gen.

Nice to see Majora take the top spot, even if it's only for one week.

Evolve numbers won't make for happy reading. I'm sure expectations were sky high and it's not like there was a lack of marketing either...

I don't think it's anymore selfish than asking publishers to support a near 10 year old system.

Comparing cross gen to exclusive next gen shows a clear trend of graphical limitations.

Now I haven't seen any marketing on the TV or general websites for Evolve but was it co marketed in the UK by MS?

The reason I say that is because there was an official Sony ad at the start of either a Twitch or YouTube ad that had Evolve in it along with Bloodborne and The Order. So it can't have been exclusive marketing on the game if that was the case.

Still I know the DLC seems to be tied more around the XBone meaning that would have helped sales on the format.

Some numbers to compare Evolve to from last year. Please tell me if I am missing something obvious, but this looks really bad to me?

TOP 10 ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE (ALL PRICES), WEEK ENDING 4 October 2014

01 (01) FIFA 15 (ELECTRONIC ARTS) - 302,866 / 1,312,419 (-70%)
02 (NE) MIDDLE EARTH: SHADOW OF MORDOR (WARNER BROS. INTERACTIVE) - Between 91,941 and 113,039
03 (NE) FORZA HORIZON 2 (MICROSOFT) - Between 51,638 and 70,530
04 (NE) SUPER SMASH BROS. (NINTENDO) - Between 37,696 and 51,487

Shadow of Mordor at the time was also only on PS4, Xbox One and PC and it sold three times as much copies in the first week. Evolve also sold less copies in the first week than Forza Horizon 2 which was only on two platforms.

Seems like Evolve will be some kind of Bomba-material for Take2.
Don't think they will be happy with the worldwide numbers next month (or two).

Every ad running for Evolve during Premier League games has been done by Microsoft.

And I've seen loads of advertisement for the game during the halftime and it started at least 3 weeks ago. Really poor performance considering that kind of support by MS.

That's what happens when you pad your game with DLC and expect your end users to pay 200% the price of a regular game just to experience everything the game has to offer on day one.

Its a real shame because I really, really enjoyed the beta and if it wasn't for the utterly stupid DLC I'd have picked it up on day one.

Nice to see Majora's Mask hit number one though.

I'm surprised it took #2 and #3 for Evolve.

The DLC backlash should have made it into 4th tops.

In a dead January in the UK? They could have seized everyones first born as part of purchase and it still would have made top 5.

No it isn't. Saints Row IV did even worse.

EDIT: Just noticed its already out of the Top 40. Good news.

Saints Row IV is seen as a remaster so it's not exactly the same thing. Evolve is a new shiny game and next-gen exclusive that was praised by everyone in the press for months. It was the game of last E3 for many and got a lot of hype because of that.

But proving that gaming media isn't setting the trend anymore, the game failed to move up on the preorders charts so they created an alpha and beta to create hype like Destiny did but it worked the other way around: people disliked the vertical slice and got bored fast. That demo/no demo vs. sales chart was once again right.

And to think this was the game THQ thought was going to save them for sure if they managed to survive until it was ready to launch.

EDIT: But maybe this is a case of game that will sell well in North America not in Europe. It wouldn't surprise me. But at least in the UK it had a big marketing push online and on TV.

I noticed that COD:AW and Far Cry 4 were £25 and £30 respectively in Tesco over the weekend, which probably contributed to their sales spike. I'm quite interested in both games, but I've got plenty to play at the moment and I can wait for prices to drop further.

in the UK? with our digital prices? i think your overestimating, in the UK we always go for value....

Evolve : XO digital : £55, PS4 Digital: £55, Amazon - £40 each.

If you want to play with a family member/friend on 2 consoles at the same time:

£55 Digital
£80 Amazon

I mentioned it before, but common consumers don't give a crap about DLC "controversies". The crazy pre-order habits of Watchdogs were pretty infamous and it didn't slow down the game's sales in the slightest.

The difference between WD & Evolve is hype. Few people care for Evolve (rightfully so), whereas WD was hyped to the high heavens as the next coming of jesus AND had a very widespread marketing campaign.

I keep wondering if the single format marketing deals hurt. Like if someone saw the TV advert, then XB1 at the end but they only have a PS4, they don't pay it another thought. Obviously doesn't happen on franchise games like COD or FIFA, but when you do it for a January release when people aren't going to game stores to see it on the shelves, it's a helluva risk.

Saints Row IV still counts as the biggest bomba of the year in my eyes just because it still sold well, WELL below expectations.
