Not really new news, just confirmation from Astro about what MS has said.

In this month's issue, we revealed that the Xbox One won't come with a headset packed in. This news caught a second burst of attention this week, so we decided to catch up with one of gaming's premiere headset manufacturers to see how they are approaching next generation consoles.

We spoke with Aron Drayer, director of marketing for high end gaming gear manufacturer Astro, about his company's plans for the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. A lot of talk about voice chat on Microsoft's new console has been brewing, and our readers that use premium (expensive) headsets have expressed concern about how their devices will work in the next generation.

"Microsoft is pushing ahead with new technology that will change how things work," Drayer told us. "Everybody got locked out of Xbox One. For instance, the Madcatz guys make some great fighting sticks for the Xbox 360. Those aren't going to work with your Xbox One. It's the nature of moving from one platform to another."

Unfortunately, this is the exact same thing we've been hearing from Microsoft about chat. The company reiterated to us today that "Only Xbox One controllers and accessories will work with the new console."

You still can output game audio through Astro Gaming's mixamps and A50 transmitter. "You will definitely not be able to do voice chat," Drayer confirmed. This means that an adapter for existing devices simply won't work.

"Based on what Microsoft is doing, that's not what they want to allow anyone in the peripheral space to do," Drayer explained. "Everybody is introducing new products, because the experience that Microsoft is developing on the Xbox One demands a different type of solution.
We love what they are doing, and it's super progressive, and we're really excited to potentially partner with them."

Astro is currently seeking a license to develop on the Xbox One and is confident they'll be brought on sometime in the near future. This also likely means that the company will have to break from its universal approach. "I definitely think it's going to demand developing a specific product for Xbox One," Drayer speculated.

In all likelihood existing headsets with a 3.5mm connection (like the A30 and A40) will continue to operate and the new tech will be incorporated into a new mixamp or similar product. However, Astro is biding its time and waiting to hear from the competitive gaming community, its original audience, what features are required. From there, Astro will let those sensibilities "bleed down to the hardcore."

Drayer speculates that, because we aren't hearing about the same type of licensing and new products for the PlayStation 4 that Sony is aiming for the status quo. "Based on what we've heard (and a lack hearing from anybody else), our assumption is that things are very likely going to work as they do today," he told us.

This means that chat output via USB will likely be consistent from the PlayStation 3 to the PlayStation 4. We've reached out to Sony for details, but at the time of publication are still awaiting response.

As for the overall market, Drayer remains positive despite a weakening of the video game sector. "We're selling more product right now than we did at this time last year," he shared. "The softness of the industry has an affect on us, too, but we're really happy where we are given that it's a transition year."

Even though he doesn't expect things to turn around in the console market until Christmas 2014, he revealed some good news about other segments. "We'll have some stuff in-between in spaces where we see high growth," Drayer said. "One is the PC pro space, like League of Legends and Starcraft II and the live streaming behind that. The mobile gaming space is really interesting, too. A transition year in one space doesn't necessarily mean that PC and mobile are slowing down. They're growing super rapidly."

So basically:
  • The A50 and the current mixamps won't work for voice chat on the Xbox One.
  • They should still work for game audio.
  • The 3.5mm headsets (A30/A40) could work for v chat using a new Xbox One licensed mixamp.
  • PS4 should allow USB voice chat so current Astro products for the PS3 should work on the PS4.

glad to hear they think ps4 will be similar, i just bought those Pulse Elite headphones and it would suck if i cant use them on ps4! granted astro doesnt make it but im sure the tech is similar

What I want to know is if this is sincere, or if it's just polite PR speak, and if it's sincere just how much of a push forward is it really. Is it more like when Apple dumped old standards because, say, USB really was above and beyond all old ports, or is it because Microsoft wants to be difficult and have proprietary garbage?

Though I guess if it were a new standard that'd be very good to use then Sony'd be on board too.

I guess they're assuming that the USB Chat aspect will remain unchanged while the USB Controller aspect has to change due to new buttons on the DS4.

The part that makes me wonder is how he DS4 handles sound now with a headset jack on the controller and game sound through speakers. Is that just an addition to the current way it works or is it replacing using the USB for chat? I'm assuming there is still a digital out on the PS4 (I haven't looked too closely) so high end devices that get sound through there should be fine.

They'll smooze their customers in public and their partners in private. Ultimately they want to sell more headsets and accessories,

Because the PS3 supports any USB soundcard (the Mixamp acts as a USB soundcard for voice chat on the PS3), functionality which they expect Sony to perpetuate with the PS4.

If Microsoft wanted universal and easy support for headsets, they'd just support USB audio for voice chat like Sony does. This is about getting royalties for every headphone for Xbone that is sold.

I also have that headset and since it's made by Sony themselves they damn well better support it on the PS4.

More like bullshit and they're happy as their existing customers have to rebuy a headset.

What are the benefits of this new technology that is causing all this incompatibility? To the consumer I mean. This just another expense as far as I can tell. Glad I'm going with a PS4 to start if my current setup is likely to work.

Unrelated but I guess this also means that Xbox 360 racing wheels (Fanatec CSR, etc) won't work on the Xbone too? Ouch. So glad I held off on buying one even though I badly wanted one for Forza 4. I figured something like this was going to happen.

The Xbox doesn't need a mixamp. The system outputs 5.1 directly to the controller. You would only need a headset. Technically you wouldn't need a new mixamp, just an adaptor to plug the headset into the controller.

Yeah this is the advantage for the new headsets designed for the Xbox One. It's unfortunate that they're forcing everyone to use this new system/license though instead of supporting both.

Glad to see my Skullcandy Plyr's will work with my PS4. Love them and see no damn reason to buy a new set already.

Totally OT but I miss the days anyone could make a controller or whatever for systems. Controllers and accessories are too damn high.
 
This really makes me angry. I invested a lot of good money in my audio system and the fact that I can't use my antlion modmic in conjunction with my mix amp for chat is infuriating. Why couldn't they have also done USB chat like Sony instead of trying to squeeze the consumer dry of money. Now I have to use kinect or buy that crapy headset communicator and wear it over my neck.

It's listed on the Xbone website (not the 5.1 part, but it would be reasonable to assume the Xbone will transmit a stereo virtual surround mix instead of 6 discrete channels). At this point, we don't know whether Microsoft will allow/license adapters for their proprietary port, so far there are only three headsets announced that will work with the controller.

That is amazing. I'm so tired of all the wires I have to connect to my mixamp.

The guy that made the sound chip for it posts on beyond3d and said it outputs 5.1 to the controller and someone else at MS said it in an interview. The system can output 4 different 5.1 audio streams to 4 controllers.

Still sounds more like a surround stereo mix, having additional processing in the headphones for virtual surround as well as the bandwidth requirement of six discrete channels seems like a drain on batteries and additional complexity that seems unnecessary.

The "4 different 5.1 streams" thing sounds interesting, but I haven't read it anywhere outside of forums. It being predicated on a proprietary connector also limits its usefulness - MS really should have gone for a regular 3,5mm connector (but money, as we all know).

Microsoft Issues Revised Statement On Headsets, Hope For Compatibility

This week has seen a number of stories from a variety of outlets on the state of headsets and chat on the Xbox One. Yesterday, we received further confirmation from Microsoft that only devices specifically designed for the Xbox One would be supported.

Today, Microsoft has provided us with more detail about why existing headsets are currently incompatible. There's also hope that existing devices may end up working after all (with help).

"The Wireless Controller has been redesigned to allow for higher data transfer speed between the controller and the console," a Microsoft representative told us. "This also required creating a new expansion port design for headsets and future controller add-on devices which is different from a standard audio plug input. Xbox plans to develop solutions in the near future to allow consumers to connect many brands of wired gaming headsets to the Wireless Controller for gaming and chat audio

That last part should make consumers very happy, especially if they've already invested hundreds in a premium personal audio solution. In short: there is hope, audiophiles.
