One of my favorite maps on gaming!

Absolutely fantastic map, I wholeheartedly agree

But to answer op's question. I do remember, because I love Type-0

And you can even fight on it, which is really cool.

Damnit, this thread made me want to go back to Ni No Kuni. I hard quit trying to platinum it, was totally killing the good vibes. But I just wanna walk around that world map now.

when i first played ffx i was like "so when am i getting to the world map?"

it was the end of ffx to me (many other reasons it sucked but yeah)

I like the chrono trigger world map. and the music <3

Back in the day, playing Final Fantasy III/VI on a giant CRT TV while staring out to sea on a Chocobo's back looked so epic.

I really, really like the map in Elliot Quest.

When you encounter an exclamation point, that means there's an area there.

You don't get the sense of it too well in this pic, but traversing across it is reminiscent of Golden Sun for me, but really it's more like a modern Zelda II. Gah. It's so good. Traversing it just feels great with so many hidden secrets and areas. Here's part of my GOTY write-up for it:

Never heard of it before, but you just sold me on this game!

Actual answer - I really liked the Witcher 3's world map. While the world was absolutely massive, there was still so much more outside of where you could go. That being said the maps for the parts that are traveled within are very well done.

Dragon Quest 3 just cause it's kinda based on the actual world map

Plus the world map music is amazing

This map was amazing yeah. Great game too, although a little bit too grindy for my taste. Still my second favorite rpg on the Nes (after DQ4).

It's funny how I don't think the bottom image looks any worse than the top image.

And it's not like the non-ios version looks any better:

I guess the key difference here is people didn't grow up with the ios version?

I agree that both those top images look horrendous (FF7 and FF6 mobile). But that original pixelated world map was always awesome (your emulator shot isnt too hot though).

Anyways, other great mentions imo are

Morrowind,
Super Mario World
Link to the Past
Shining in the Darkness
Donkey Kong Country 3
Super Mario 3D World

Just to name a few.

I have a certain fondness for the world map in the Mount&Blade games.

full-3668-7333-map1.jpg

You spend quite a bit of time in it. In fact, unless you're in a settlement or taking part in a battle, you're probably lounging in the map. The beauty of it is it's not just you or your party shown traveling around the land - every party (warband, caravan, group of peasants, et cetera) has a presence on the map, even if they're well out of sight. You'll regularly come across a field battle or siege spanning many in-game hours or find yourself being pursued by a horde of bandits. The progress of a war can be marked by the number of ravaged villages or towns displaying the colors of their new factional owners. Parties will leave tracks on the map - the signs of a marshal leading a contingent of lords and their armies on a campaign are unmistakable.

In terms of appearance, the maps are fairly plain, something which will seemingly be addressed in Bannerlord, but they more than succeed at bringing the fictional worlds to life.

I can't see much people agreeing with me, but I loved Oblivions map of Cyrodil, It was huge when it first came out and getting lost in the forests was huge. Plus, the city itself in the middle was also very well constructed, easy to find things and easy to understand what was the main point of interest in the story, the tower!

The tower in It's majesty and the beautiful city around it.

That was my hope, bro! It's SO. good. Just make sure you download any/all patches once you get it. Here's the first part of my write-up, there were patch issues and they got thankfully fixed:

3. Elliot Quest ; Elliot Quest is a masterful and frustrating game. At its core it's a Zelda game, so it's funny that we got two "masterful and frustrating" Zeldas in one year. (The other one of these is on this list, too, a couple spaces down.) But there are really three Zelda games on this list, and to me this is arguably the best original Zelda experience 2015 had to offer. Something about this game is exceptionally special. It's in the gaming dictionary next to diamond in the rough. The big issue is with the patches that had to take place to get the game to where it is today. The developers chipped away at patch after patch like a veritable game of whac-a-mole. Each problem solved seemed to bring a new issue. My impression is these patches, thanks to the devs' diligent and continued efforts, are completely ironed out so any previous frustrations can be filed away as a footnote to a wonderful game.

Please do let me know what you think when you get to play it--you and I tend to have very similar tastes in games so I think you'll enjoy it immensely!

It's fucking Leonardo!

In all seriousness

Morrowind: Vvardenfell is simply amazing, having to learn directions and landmarks to get around just made it feel so real. Best Bethesda map/world period.

Ni-No Kuni: What hasn't been said about this world map that hasn't been said about fellatio? It's fantastic, satisfying, and makes for a mind blowing sensory experience.

I personally love all the early FF world maps (except 8, being on the field always was an eyesore). As far as FFVI is concerned the back nine map was always ugly. That's the point. The new version with its cherry kool-aid ocean and bonkers perspective is a goddamn blasphemous atrocity.

The problems is the IOS version is incohesive, they look like sprites from different games. Oh and they look terrible too, has nothing to do with growing up with the game, the completely borked the color palette.

The IOS version merges together three very average art styles that clash terribly. The sprites also look God awful. FF6 snes isn't the best looking game on the system but it looks so much better than the mobile port.

Also you used an emulated shot which makes any 2D game look bad.

OK I can understand FF6 looks better on the SNES. My point was that final fantasy overworlds (past the NES titles) always looked a bit ugly to me. Even in its original state I was not fond of FF6's overworld compared to, say, Chrono Trigger or Dragon Quest 6. Then again there's lots of things people praise FF6 for, that I don't get.

It just seemed funny that these posts were so close, one saying 7 had the best world map and another one saying 6 ios had literally the worst, when they look about the same kind of ugly.

Right click, search image in Google, "Best guess for this image: final fantasy 6 cultists tower". Took all of 2 seconds.

If every post has the name of the game, that takes less than 2 seconds for every poster (since you're familiar with the game). If all posts are without the name, it takes several minutes to google like a hundred games for everyone reading this thread. Even more importantly, it's a terrible mindset to think "My time is so much more important than yours so I'm not going to bother typing "FF6" but I expect other people to jump through hoops instead"

I disagree. That's the equivalent of having to label the Beatles in a music thread.

If you can't identify the Beatles (or FFVI) maybe the thread isn't for you.

RPG's are small subsets of games with maps. JRPG's are a small subset of RPG's (for example I play quite a lot of RPG's but I've never finished a single JRPG). Final Fantasy is a single series within JRPG genre. FF 6 is a singe game within the series. Your picture is from iOS version, which is yet another niche-inside-niche-inside niche.

It's more like "If you can't identify 3 seconds of obscure Tupac Shakur song this rap thread isn't for you, even if title is about all music genres of just rap"

You're still missing the point though. Whatever FFVII looks like, it at least looks consistent. It's 3D characters on a 3D field with 3D towns. FFVI Mobile looks completely crazy with flat-colored 2D sprites on a mode-7 texturized field with 3D towns... not to mention the UI elements with a completely different pixel resolution. Even if it had the best 2D sprites ever and the best 3D town models ever it would still look horrible as they just don't belong to the same artstyle.

Mario 3D World is my favourite. The casino bit in particular is lovely.

BowserCasinoWorld_3DWorld.gif

Really? I always disliked 3D World's level select world. That last carnival section is pretty cool but shots like this:

show just how flat it is. Super Mario World makes you feel like you're actually trekking through a world, while 3D World makes it feel like you're selecting levels. I'm sure some people prefer the streamlined look, but if I wanted it streamlined I'd go even further and just have a menu.

Bravely Default's world map is absolutely beautiful to both observe and traverse across

My favorite bit about the world is the smooth transition from day into night, coupled that with the music trading in an energetic beat with one that is calm and soothing

03.gif

Shining force two had a great overworld where there wereplaces to explore that later became your battlefields. It really enjoyed that, because it made the world feel vast and lived in.

I don't think I've seen someone show super Mario 64, which has the most innovative overworld, perhaps of any game ever made.

A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds are some of my favorite to actually traverse and explore. They're both just full of detail and secrets.

And since nobody mentioned it yet, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne's world map looks pretty good despite the fact that your character is just a pointer or something. Besides, the music theme is really cool. Both of them.

So one of titles frequently cited as one of the top 2 (or 3) games in the largest RPG franchise is now niche? Huh?

Tupac definitely isn't niche. Google "the best rapper of all times" and your first result is Tupac Shakur. Google "the greatest RPG of all times" you'll see FF6 in 20th place. FF6 might be a great game for all I know, no disrespect, just that I've never seen anyone play it or talking about it before this thread.

But let's assume we're talking about FF7, which is like 100 times more famous than FF6 and deserves a spot in some lists as the best RPG of all times. Even if 99.9% of Neogaf readers would recognize FF7 from any screenshot, you should still name the picture for that 0.01% of people.

Edit: Gaming is so fragmented on different platforms and genres that every game is relatively niche. You might think "everyone" is talking about Overwatch, but you'll have your sports game fans, truck simulator fans, historic strategy game fans, indie game fans and Japanese game fans who don't give a crap about any game outside their favorite genre. Or you might think "everyone" knows League of Legends, but even that is a niche game because of the majority of people don't play on PC.
