Chrono Trigger has a great world-map. Baten Kaitos too.

I prefer when world maps are used to describe places, rather than being huge/empty areas for random battles.

It's funny how I don't think the bottom image looks any worse than the top image.

And it's not like the non-ios version looks any better:

I guess the key difference here is people didn't grow up with the ios version?

It's not just nostalgia. FF6 on the SNES was very well put together and looked great, at least in its own time. The iOS version is lazy and poorly designed. They did some pretty good work on battle backgrounds and monster sprites, but they seemed to go out of their way to make the character sprites look generic and muddy.
