Capybaragames president thinks FC3:Blood dragon Trailer is a ripoff.

So, I haven't seen this concept in a videogame trailer before and now there's 2.
Well, I think there is a connection.
Some of you will keep saying only the opening is similar.
Nope.
I see that as "only the cartoon genre and period it pays homage to are different"
And no one caught the thing with release dates at the end ?
Ubisoft certainly watched it and took inspiration. I have to say, though' I do like far cry 3 execution better.

What?

I just went back and watched the endings of both again. How are they at all similar?

Rewatching them, there are a lot of generic and specific 80s throwbacks and references in both, but not really to each other. You can't say that the general style and pacing of doing an 80s parody is unique to your trailer.

Very confusing that Nathan could not see this. Another case where a public figure representing a company should've stepped back from the keyboard and asked himself (and preferably, others) if it's really a good idea to hit that submit button.

I think he is just trying to promote his game (which no one has heard of)
Maybe, but that last bit just made you look come across as uninformed instead. >_>

What? It's an 80's aesthetic. Done a great deal better than your trailer I might add. You did not invent the 80's.
What if Nathan did.

That might be the piece of the puzzle we're missing here.

Nathan invented the 80s as we know it and his company owns the exclusive rights to make trailers referencing things from that decade.

In that case he should be held fully responsible for the shell suit, the reign of Margaret Thatcher and the downfall of Doctor Who. Death sentence.

This is an amazing quote.

you kidding? it's a ripoff alright.

Blood Dragon was just too awesome but being a Ubisoft game there had to be something fishy...too bad it came from the advertising, I can't tell if I'll buy the game yet...but Ubi...

Wait...

So because the game looks good, it can't possibly be from Ubisoft?

I give Dean Evans (@SpleenZilla) credit for his calm response to the accusations. Despite being openly accused of theft, he answered maturely and still showed open admiration for Capy's efforts:

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
So just to sort of ensure this serving of Humble Pie is comprehensive enough, heres a collection of faux 80's/90's style adverts:

http://youtu.be/z6dZtNYGlLM - Toy Story 3 viral (2010)
http://youtu.be/ZQZeQSaXwR8 - Super Meat Boy (2010)
http://youtu.be/TwbQi_G9cB0 - Megaman 10 (2010)
http://youtu.be/2bBv1WkMUFs - Portal - fan-made? (2010)
http://youtu.be/X5JHBdcNu6g - Borderlands (2012?)
http://youtu.be/-dEj_HHiQvY - Retro City Rampage (2012)
http://youtu.be/wF_LJfwFsE4 - Wreck It Ralph viral (2012)

Out of all of those, Super Time Force executes poorly on the concept in comparison because it doesnt keep the VHS distortion effects throughout and instead just switches to 1080p HD animation and dubstep. It all seems more like sour grapes of "someone else did it better than us :(" then any real "NOBODY HAS DONE THIS BEFORE!" sentiment because that'd be crazytown.

Great post.

Coming into this thread I assumed I was going to side the capy guy just based off of reputations. Glad I took time to watch both and realize that he is way off base. Both trailers start with similar cuts but so does everything else in that style - like you just showed above.

Oy. Im starting to wonder if it's getting to the point that twitter posts are a bad idea if you're a developer, as the risk of speaking too soo or too rash seems rather high these days.

Oh, it's awesome. I used to hate twitter, but it is now the greatest form of people watching.

I honestly feel like the Super Time Force cartoon segments have more in common with Adventure Time/Bravest Warriors/Regular Show style humor and presentation than GI Joe/80s cartoons.

Lots of gems from Capybara games. Their creative director apparently does much care for Bioshock Infinite.

Is anyone in game development happy anymore? Or is it just that Twitter brings out the immediate worst reaction in people due to its character limit and nearly instant nature?

Part of me wants to not support a company that has employees who lash out like this, but another part of me knows that there are significantly worse things being said/done by other developers that are not made public/tweeted. I guess it is the double sided sword of transparency that exists now with game company employees using social media.

Ubisoft stole the intro from Capy. Capy stole the intro from shitty High School morning announcement videos all across North America.

"oh im just flipping through the channels and WOAH LOOK AT THIS"

I didn't even think of Super TIME Force once watching Blood Dragon's trailer. And I'm VERY excited for that game and truly love the animated trailer.

Just shut up and releasae your game already.

There's so few ways you can do a trailer promoting this type of 80's feel? I mean a lot of people right in this forum would've end up cooking something similar if put in charge of creating a promotion.

The man is after some publicity and is somewhat working.

I can kinda see the similarities but nothing to get hurt over. Personally I think the STF trailer is more radical

Yup, specially the gameplay footage, that trailer sold me on the game, FUCKING DINOSAURS MAN

Though when I watched a PAX walkthrough I didn't like the amount of time you had to waste everytime you died, I felt like it took you away from the action too often, but that's probably because of the player's skills with the game. I'd love to see a high level walkthrough to see the amount of insanity levels we watched in the gameplay portion of that trailer.

There are similarities but it's different enough that it's not plagiarism. The Super Time Force trailer's cartoon sequences alone are enough to dispel any theft accusations. The beginning of the trailer with the changing channels, the gameplay bit with dubstep and the ending with the changing years are what's similar. Just that.

This. Capy don't own the 80's and certainly weren't the first with this. The Blood Dragon trailer is also 10x better then theirs to boot.

Capy respect -10.

I think it's pretty clear that the FarCry guys have been 'inspired' by the Capy video. I support the Capy guy.

Man I love Capy, but this is just stupid whining. They probably copied the VHS thing but that's it, and even then, I would consider than an achievement

How exactly are you so sure of this? Me and many others are buying Super Time Force when it comes out... Probably not Blood Dragon though.

Not sure whether to laugh or cry.

MY wording was a little off. I mean I know many people will buy Super Time Force. I mean I probably won't buy Blood Dragon, don't know or care if others will.

I love Indies, but the copies sold is not even anywhere near the range of copies AAA games sell. Considering its pushed by a big pub, even if that DLC/addon sells badly, it is still very likely to outsell 99,9999% of all Indies.

Which doesnt mean its going to make more money overall (since developing the Indie costs less), but purely based on copies sold? No contest.

Because I live in the real world where the DLC of a big budget FPS on multiple platforms almost always outsells indie games that even some hardcore gamers have not heard off.

And get off my avatar you crook.
