WSJ analyst is claiming after the recent Sony investors meeting that Sony is planning to announce a PS4 Slim on top of Neo in September at Tokyo Game Show.

See, I never believed that Neo was a PS4 Slim. I figured if there was going to be a PS4 Slim, it would be in addition to Neo. Don't know why some people thought otherwise.

Osiris' original thread only talked about a upgraded CPU not a GPU upgrade. That came a lot later and from other sources? I can't honestly see how a upgraded GPU was ever actually on the cards outside Sony doing what (I assume) Microsoft to be doing i.e. going late 2017 and Vega.

With the sound issues on the 480 though, I wonder, what are the chances we'd get a liquid cooled GPU solution? That would be interesting, and a first for consoles.

Since 8GB GDDR5 on the 256bit bus maxes out at 256 GB/s, the max up clock on the Neo GPU is to 1080 MHz without running into bandwidth bottlenecks.

One analyst is claiming that, and some people thought that because the rumors pointed the NEO being the same or smaller than the original PS4
 
Which might back up the idea of a delay to neo? If they held back waiting for more power, they'd need something to compete against Xbox one S

This isn't aimed at you but I just shrug my shoulders now. I feel too many in this and the other Neo threads are setting themselves up for disappointment. I've tried to explain the reasons why 5.5 TF plus isn't likely to happen this year or early next year (unless Sony is secretly working on chips forged from unobtainium!).

I've boarded hype trains before and they always end in derailment so now I'm just a lot more realistic and who knows Sony may have some other surprises.

Err, you mean 256 Gigabytes per second right?
Also the upclock can still benefit in many situations that aren't bandwidth-limited.

No. What the patent describes is more expensive than directly changing frame-buffer resolution.
It's useful for emulators because it doesn't have any of the compatibility and accuracy problems that increasing frame-buffer resolution has.

oh sure - I don't think there is much overlap. I was thinking more that if neo has 4k streaming services and UHD drive, then it being held back until Q1 leaves Q4 entirely to MS for consumers that want a 4k media box. So in that situation they may want to refresh the PS4 to counter it.

Not sure if you can exactly make a slim that quickly - presumably they are constantly doing refreshed designs just in case but getting those into production isn't a quick turnaround

Bottleneck is also shared on the PS4 between CPU and GPU. Would like to see them use GDDR5x to hit ~270 Gb/s to prevent throttling.

its like what beyond3d said, replacing the CPU with Zen or anything won't be good enough because there memory is still a bottle neck because it has to share bandwidth with the CPU. The neo won't be able to run any of the current PS4 games at twice the frame rate even with 2X GPU power, it is only able to provide cosmetic upgrade at a steadier frame rate. DF also said if they want to increase the bandwith significantly they have to upgrade the ram to something like GDDR5X where a 4 gig cost 30 bucks more than GDDR5. That a lone is already a $60 increase in BOM wihout factoring in an upgraded CPU. They best thing they can do now is clock everything as high as they can without increasing the cost to build and get it out as soon and as cheap as possible. Sony should just forget about the specs war, if they want to launch first MS can just up their specs compare to whatever neo end up being.

The fixed function pipelines haven't been created yet but in a few years the devs & Sony will chose how the data paths should be laid out to create the fixed function pipelines.

Quick Response Queues allow developers to prioritize certain tasks running asynchronously without preempting other processes entirely. In case you missed Dave's blog post on this feature, you can check it out here. In short, though, flexibility is the point AMD wants to drive home. Its architecture allows multiple approaches to improving utilization and minimizing latency, both of which are immensely important in applications like VR.

Devs will basically see it as a PS4 besides tagging some codes to run on the virtual co-processors , these co-processors will be for the up-rendering & so on. Neo will be a beast that work smart & not hard.

You have to stop looking at it this way. You can upclock the GPU, but what's the point if your memory isn't fast enough to take advantage of it, or if you don't have enough of it?

The current Neo is nearly perfectly balanced (it could use a little more memory bandwith). However, if you were to try and force it to be >5 TF, you'd probably want to design an entirely new machine. At that GPU point, you'd be looking at something that would require around 280 GB/S or > memory bandwith, and atleast 12 GB of memory. There's no point in upclocking your GPU that hard if you can't actually use it.

I don't think you are going to see a shift in how devs use the Gpu. Its simply more muscle to provide better framerate or resolution. You wre forgetting ps4 support is a mandate. You're making it out to be way more flexible then it is.

They will see the PS4 GPU as they seen it before but now it will have help

Of course there will be no shift. Also the CUs aren't just free available, there are still shared resources they also rely on. It's not an additional card in the console with free to use computing power.

So you're saying that the AMD has purposely supplied RX 480 with a bandwidth that is restricting it with its 224 or 256GB/s bandwidth (depending on the amount of memory) ?

Perhaps the 480 has the benefit of not having to share bandwidth with an on chip cpu like the Neo's APU?

I'm firmly in the camp of PS3.5 - or PS3D. They will take the current PS3 and beef it up a bit, so it's nice and cheap - imagine a PS4/3D that is around double the power of PS3 and 100% b/c - devs are getting to grips with cell and the power boost will mean more stable frame/rates and 3D.

Essentially the same idea by replace 3D with 4K/PSVR

Yes, so but the sharing is dynamic so provided the CPU can hit the cache a lot of the time, it's less of a problem. Or at least not more of a problem than on the PS4. But that's all based on the clock speed for the memory access, which is not really public yet.

What Sony can do? I don't believe they will try to increase the clock anymore... so 5TF, 5.5F or better raw power is out of question in my predictions... 4.2TFs is yet a thing with a really big machine with thermal issues (the external power brink makes sense now).

What do you guys thing?

How do you know that Sony are moving Neo APU from Glofo to TSMC ? I cant find any information anywhere.

Reading the 480 reviews many are suggesting TSMC could be better, but is there any foundation in that ? Is the Glofo 14 nm that much more power draw ?

Also TSMC are struggling to supply Nvidia beig suggested on many forums....so does not compute what you have said if Sony are trying to get Neo made in time.

Sony never used GF and GF itself didn't have production enough to supply AMD... now about the differences:

Samsung 14nm FF = Bit smaller chip
TSMC 16nm FF+ = Bit better performance and higher clocks

GF uses Samsung 14nm FF but their quality are below what Samsung Fab produce... GF was never a good production fab to be fair and they have a lot of issues to deal that make TSMC better with that kind of stuff.

AMD will probably use TSMC for Vega and Zen... TSMC is way bigger than GF and have a lot more Fabs... I don't know how many 16nm FF+ lines nVidia contracted from TSMC but they said the demand was way higher than what they expected and that is the issue (nVidia not expecting suck demand)... TSMC has enough production line if nVidia had planned to use them.

So your belief is that Option B is, "… or we just ruin it"? That strikes me as unlikely.

Perhaps the problem isn't with Polaris but rather GF's fabrication? They're historically behind schedule, and wouldn't significant leakage at higher clocks be expected from an immature process? Seems like a lot of Polaris' issues might be solved or at least mitigated with better fabrication.

Let's see if GF process gets better over the time.

About Vega the only apparent difference I know is the memory controller... we will need to wait it releases to see more differences.

Why not the usual "we don't comment on rumours and speculation"? Apart from that, delaying until Mar '17 isn't going to enable 5.5 Tflops become a reality IMO.

I have a question to those in the know. If you look at die shots of both PS4 and Xbox One you see "©2012" etched into the chip despite both consoles not releasing until Nov '13. Does this not signify that the chips were locked down in this year outside of tweaks to clocks? i.e. Xbox One upped the clocks by 53MHz and 150MHz.

Polaris 10 is simply over-volted. You can undervolt it and its power consumption goes down significantly.

IF you have a good bin that can produce the same clockspeeds stable at lower voltage yes

amd didn't overvolt it for no reason, it's to improve yields so they can have more supply early on.

All the more reason to wait, either till AIB card (that are supposedly binned cards) or for glofo's yields to improve so amd don't have to put stupid voltages on their gpus and you don't have to rely on getting a good bin chip to be able to have somewhat reasonable power consumption.

My cpu undervolts to 1.021v at 4.3 ghz which makes it very power efficient compared to out of the box, but that is ONLY because I got a super good bin on it, it doesn't mean every out of the box 4690k will run at that voltage at this clockspeed. In fact the majority need 1.2 or 1.25v for the same clockspeed.

Lottery chip you mean because you need luck to get a card that works with undervolt lol

RX 480 issue is the lack of at least one addictional 6 pin connector... this chip was not made to stay below 150W at 1266MHz.

I don't know anything about Neo, but the reason they acknowledged it is so the media would not hound them about it at E3 and fans would not be disappointed when it wasn't revealed. Microsoft acknowledged Scorpio and it is well over a year away.

That may have been a factor but surely there is more to it than that. I don't remember another time where a rumour has been acknowledged like this. It wasn't a simple Neo is real either. Andrew House actually went into quite some detail with the FT about the strategy etc. Even mainstream media ran articles.

Sony may have found out about Scorpio being at E3 and felt forced to acknowledge Neo? They did state they were surprised Scorpio was announced.

Nope... read the article... Xbone lacks what made a GNC 1.1 card while GCN 1.1 was based in what they did with PS4.

An easy comparison without enter in details...

GCN 1.0 = 2 ACEs = Xbone
GCN 1.1 = 8 ACEs = PS4

That was discussed at PS4/Xbone launch.

They are both GCN 1.1.

Both have true audio on the chip which is a GCN 1.1 feature, both lack the compression of GCN 1.2.

sony is commissioning a chip from AMD, their engineers don't have any detailed control over the design. it won't be standard consumer hardware just because AMD doesn't make APUs with 8 jaguar cores and mid-size GPUs for the PC market, but the IP blocks that make up the chip are pretty standard yes.

I'm sure it is a co op work using AMD tech... AMD and Sony confirmed that a lot of times.

Is this how Neo plans to get to 4K!? The patent describes a hardware based technique that uses multiple frames of data and reconstructs them into a higher resolution image. This will NOT be as good as native 4K - but this could be a very intelligent and elegant compromise.

The interesting thing about this tecnhiqe? You need super high resolutions to make it more accurate. 60 FPS = more data = more image information = accurate reconstruction. I'm sure it falls apart in some areas, but motion blur and high framerates should go a long way in easing those concerns.

Isn't that what Quantum Break does only using 4x 720p images to get to 1080.
